Utah Latinidad: Centering Marginalized Histories in Collaborative Community Research
November 15, 2023
Dr. Ed Muñoz, Associate Professor of Ethnic Studies and Sociology at the University of Utah, discusses his roots as a Chicano scholar of the interior West, and his digital oral history project, Construyendo Latinidad: Constructing Latinx Identity. This oral history project consists of Latinx oral histories built off of previous oral histories collected in the 1970s and 1980s of Utah's Hispanic/Latino community. In partnership with the Utah Historical Society’s Peoples of Utah Revisited initiative, this project has expanded to include an additional 15 oral histories from Utah’s multifaceted Latino community. In detailing the origins, development, and sustainability of oral history projects, this presentation demonstrates the value of collaborative research between academics, public agencies, and community organizations.
