Communities in Jauja celebrating their new tradition "Sacha Talpuy", mountain planting.
The World Bank's Social Development Department, together with the Agriculture and Rural Development Department, and external partners undertook a work program on Local Institutions and Climate Change to address the importance of strong local institutions and their long-term presence in successful implementation of community-based adaptation strategies.
Supported by the Bank-Netherlands Partnership Program, and the Trust Fund for Environmentally and Socially Sustainable Development (Norway-Finland), series of activities were carried out in partnership with the Bank's regional departments from Africa, Latin America and Middle East regions and the World Bank Institute.
These short videos were prepared in coordination with the World Bank Institute and the local task teams to highlight some of the individual case studies in participating countries. They document some of the challenges of climate risks faced at the local level and show collective local response mechanisms
.

Why basically just pines? Are pines native to Peru? Shouldn't they be planting other trees?
@LureThosePixels
@LureThosePixels 6 лет назад
But if they're not native then they shouldn't be there
@labitacoradelbonsaihidropo3370
hello there. we do have very altitude resistant trees here, one species of polylepis can live almost at 5000 msnm. Pines and eucalyptus are beautiful, but not a good choice
@labitacoradelbonsaihidropo3370
they grow fast and produce decent wood, but it's a shame cause our native species are awesome

I was thinking just the same thing. In some places as New Zealand alps pines are taking over. Tree species from southern parts of the Andes should be better, they are at least from the same continent.

They are economically beneficial. And there are pine species that have been adapted. But they are planting all sorts of trees, a healthy forest needs variety, ofc this is more recent and the permaculture initiatives are taking over all of this projects.

So many hillsides and mountains in this video stand bare. It makes me sad to think that they were undoubtedly loaded with forest before they cut them down. Reforestation efforts, I read, are not keeping up with the devastation through fires, logging, mining and other destructive activities. We need to find other sources for fuel and paper. Many plants offer wonderful properties for both, if we would cultivate them and stop relying on trees.

That's right Lynn; they speak of a 8000 acre project. That is barely a dent; the timber company I work for has 7 tree farms, and each one plants 4000 acres each year. As for using agricultural land to produce fuel and fiber, that notion sounds quite wasteful to me, given that remote mountain slopes and areas with substandard soils are quite capable of producing a continuous yield of wood products with proper management.

@@mikek9488 They are, the doc is from 9 years ago, i live in Peru and have seen permaculture take off in the last years, so a mix of trees and plants are now being favoured. Mostly native plants and trees but also imported ones all according to commercial demand.

@@celdur4635 That's exciting news Pablo. Peru will become much richer as a result. I think planting any species that will survive, grow and potentially yield a commercial product is an excellent choice. people that say you should not plant non native forest species are not aware of forest plant community successional patterns. Once forests are reestablished, the native species will succeed the non natives in time as long as a seed bank is present. At any rate, establishing tree farm plantations, while perhaps not ideal from an ecologist's point of view, will confer many benefits to the people of Peru as well as a host of various wildlife species that enjoy the habitats created by a tree farm. Certainly much more desirable than sparsely vegetated or brushy useless hillsides.

@@mikek9488 indeed I agree. We still need te reforest a lot so I'm sure a lot of experimentation is on going. The Spanish chroniclers wrote of how wooded some areas of the coast were, they had to chop there way through... And now those areas are desert and have been for hundreds of years. Fortunately natives survived and prospered and now ancient techniques are being revived and adapted with new tech to serve our needs!
