Perucetus was published and described on August 2nd, 2023 and is the largest fossil vertebrate discovered to date. In this video filled with beautiful and fun animations, we will learn more about this animal's discovery, wild size estimates, and what it's role in the prehistoric ocean's ecosystems may have been. "Nature's Compendium" has officially surpassed 50,000 subscribers and I hope that we can all end the year on a good note with a fun video on such an amazing animal. Thank you all for supporting me and my channel over the years and I hope you enjoy the video!

That T-REX poster was painfully accurate. I've seen everything from crocodylomorphs to pterosaurs to bony fish said to resemble T. rex in headlines...
@AmericanAdvancement
@AmericanAdvancement 6 месяцев назад
I can’t really fault the article writers for referring to T-Rex all of the time. When you really think about it, T-Rex is the general public’s most recognized point of reference for the scale of prehistoric life and for good reason. When pressed further, some may know about the ice age or about other creatures like dimetrodon, triceratops, stegosaurus, allosaurus, etc, but that’s about the full extent of the average person’s knowledge on the topic. Paleoenthusiasts have to recognize that prehistory in general is a niche topic that few people are interested in. Some IP’s like Jurassic Park and Ice Age have given prehistoric life more attention, but that’s usually the most exposure that the general public will receive about the topic.

Shows why things like Prehistoric Planet and various paleontology RU-vid channels, like this one, is really important (and that there should be more adult programs at museums to get people excited about paleontology, beyond the kid/family-friendly ones)! Now we just need algorithms to be able to get lesser-known paleontology facts out to the public, instead of showing too much stuff about T Rex over and over.

The fact that #Perucetus was only described so recently while it was such a huge animal just shows how hard it is to find fossils.

The idea of Perucetus being too slow to be an active predator and having to rely on scavenging ignores that all other slow-swimming basilosaurids were dedicated shallow-water ambush predators, often raptorial predators too.

I love how so many people criticize about them using sirenians, when it was using them that got to the lower estimates of 65 ton, and estimate using whales that got 300+ ton. The weight estimates where very rough, because they didn’t have much material, so they used expected skeleton weight, and what that would be proportional to the rest of the animal. Sirenians have a high skeletal to body weight, so the skeleton takes of up more of the total weight. Baleen whales have relatively light skeletons, so that’s what gives the higher weight estimates. Also: #Perucetus
@bkjeong4302
@bkjeong4302 6 месяцев назад
The issue is that other basilosaurids with dense sirenian-like bones didn’t have nearly as much bulk as the official Perucetus reconstruction assumed, which massively cuts down on its mass.

i wonder if an Eocene Version of an Orca(not talking about basilosaurus it´s kinda Sticking to the shallows right?) will be found sooner or later now we did find an animal as big as Perucetus colossus. Like im talking about a Super Predator whale that is capable of three-dimensional swimming during the Eocene Epoch here, like imagine a Dorudon acting like a killer whale or livyatan melvillei.
@AmericanAdvancement
@AmericanAdvancement 6 месяцев назад
Maybe, but I think that role was filled by the ancestors of Megalodon and other giant prehistoric sharks. There’s a good reason why the basilosaurids stuck to the shallows and that’s because of the megatoothed sharks.

I imagine that most people in the foreseeable future, will refer to it by its full binomial name, like Tyrannosaurus, and not just being called Perucetus.
