Perun is known as the Slavic god of thunder in Slavic mythology, he is the god of war, justice and lightning. Perun is often related to Perkunas from Baltic mythology with whom he shares the same attributes and the name's origin. In Slavic mythology, the god Perun is perceived as the chief of the Slavic gods by the ancient Slavs.
Perun was often depicted as man with silver hair, red beard and golden mustache, he had dominion over heaven and had absolute control over the weather. He wielded an spear, an ax and a bow which he used to shoot lightning arrows.
Though it is very difficult to trace the origin of the Slavic god Perun, many scholars think he may have originated from around the era of Vladimir the great, the tsar of Kievan Rus back in the 10th century. But in other accounts, the god Perun was there before Vladimir the great as some statues of the Slavic God were found way before that era. Often seen as the Slavic god of war and justice, it was by Perun and by their naked swords that the ancient Slavs swore their oaths, it was by Perun that military treaties were done, believing that if they cross Perun they would die by their own weapons. The most popular tale about Perun is his story of conflict against the underworld god Veles, but as with many other similar tales, Perun was victorious in his fight with Veles.
The Slavic god Perun is known in other mythologies through different other deities. The Lithuanians called him Perkunas, in Yoruba culture he's known as king Shango. In Celtic mythology, he is the god Taranis, while in Greek and Roman mythology, he is Zeus and Jupiter respectively. And finally in Norse mythology, the Slavic god Perun is known as Thor.
