We got some cuttings of a Peruvian apple cactus from a friend's neighbor! These edible cactus put off a fruit similar to dragonfruit, so we are excited to watch this grow!

i hate plants that dont flower or produce fruits and i thought cactus are all like that....now its time to look for this kind of cactus :D

We love all plants, whether they produce fruits that are edible for humans or not! Almost all cactus will produce fruits, but some are only edible to birds and insects. Please feel free to reach out if you'd like to buy a Peruvian apple cactus cutting from us, we have some to share! :)

It’s actually better to have a 45 degrees angle cut as there is a bigger area for rotes to come out from.

Water it heavily? It has no roots, you should wait till it roots before watering it
@GreeniesGarden
@GreeniesGarden 5 лет назад
All of our cuttings did just fine with a good soak early on, but we wouldn't suggest keeping the soil damp or watering too frequently before the roots come in! Thanks for sharing! :D
@rickdavis2235
@rickdavis2235 4 года назад
Joseph Mauricio Flores I agree. Plants with no roots cannot utilize water and they risk rotting before rooting, especially when planted in a mix heavy in organics. Cacti grow in mineralized soil with few organics.

can i graft a very old 400mm Gymnocalycium genus to the top of a ""cereus repandus"Peruvian apple cactus" with a rootstock size off about 200mm"" is it worth the risk of killing the Gymnocalycium genus ,how likely is this to work. or would it be too top heavy THANKS
@GreeniesGarden
@GreeniesGarden 4 года назад
That's a great question! We have no experience with grafting cactus but it sounds like it could be possible if you provide a good structure for the plant. Please let us know how it does!

Do you ever add rooting hormone to the end before planting?
@GreeniesGarden
@GreeniesGarden 2 года назад
Yes we have done that before, you can also water it with seaweed extract to encourage root development.
@derfman5055
@derfman5055 4 года назад
why didnt you let dry or root before planting?
@GreeniesGarden

We let them callous over for at least 3 days before planting. :)

Awesome! I already have five prickly pears, two teddy bear cholla, one jumping cholla, two beavertail cacti, and three of something inedible (all propagated and FREE, praise the Lord!). I hope to get dragon fruit and Peruvian apple cactus soon, too. They will be a great addition, thanks for showing me how!

Why not just plant straight into the ground?
@GreeniesGarden
@GreeniesGarden 4 года назад
That's an option too! We have done both, but like to be able to baby the plant while it is developing roots. When it's in a pot for its first year, it can be moved in and out of shade as needed. :)

I have about 10 of them growing on my property in Port Charlotte Florida , they have a flat taste nothing to write home about , easy to grow break off a branch and stick it in the ground except Watch out for the cactus thorns , I got stabbed with one of them ended up in the emergency room for some reason it generate immense amount of pain , I am fighting an infection in my leg from these cactus thorns .

Greenies Garden thank you on the light side of things , I had a woman knock on my door I believe she was Jamaican or maybe South American anyway she wanted to look at the cactus to see if it is similar to the cactus they have in their country , after she looked at it I was told it is not exactly what they have in the country , I think I know what she was talking about a cactus that looks similar to this one it's called the San Pedro cactus except the San Pedro have LSD , it is used in Peru the same way peyote is used in self United States , oh well you can't win them all .

The fruit tastes very much like dragon fruit. Some are better than others depending on growing conditions but since dragon fruits are now $5-7 per each fruit we will be growing both kinds!
@photondebuger45

How do you tell if the fruit is ripe or not kinda annoyed that I know I have one of these in my front yard that gives like 5 fruits but the damn birds and ants get to them first
@GreeniesGarden
@GreeniesGarden 2 года назад
Sharing fruit with the birds is going to happen :) You can buy little nylon "socks" to wrap fruits in to keep birds from accessing them. They'll be ripe when they are red. You can always try the half of the fruit that the birds didn't peck into to see if you like them!
@hamaevan9367

is it edible? can it be used as mescaline?
@GreeniesGarden
@GreeniesGarden 6 лет назад
It's edible and makes a fruit that is similar to dragonfruit, but it's not hallucinogenic. That would be the San Pedro you're thinking of :)
@jonathon7856
@jonathon7856 5 лет назад
@@GreeniesGarden there's many cacti that have mescaline. The San Pedro or trichocerius pacanoi is one of the weakest. Check out a page called trouts notes. Its mentions alot of cacti..from active to just garden or edible. The T. Peruvianas, Lophaphora all the way to the stetsonia Corinne is active with mescaline..I personally never have tried it, but do got over 400 active plants growing with my garden partner. I've enjoyed your videos so far, and am looking forward to the next ones coming.
