Sunday at the parents...roast in the oven...just poured myself a nice Highland Park...and we got forty minutes of squirl-whacking ahead of us...I'm not a demanding person. I just like sunday-roast, decent whiskey and a bunge of dead pest-critters.

I use the H&N Hornets in my .25 caliber Hatsan Bullboss for squirrels and they are brutally lethal. Rarely a kick or flop. My main goal, INSTANT dispatch. 👍🐿🇺🇸
@dennisnichols9783
@dennisnichols9783 2 года назад
Really like to add how also incredibly lethal on squirrel noggins the .25 caliber Diablo Hades pellets are as well. Actually the same can be said about the Diablo Hades in .22 caliber as well with a stout shooting rifle such as my Hatsan Flash wood QE, the Umarex Origin, and/or my Umarex Gauntlet II. Pure cranial pass throughs rarely if ever a twitch when I do my part correctly. 👍🇺🇸🐿🎯

@competenceattractsluck6997
@competenceattractsluck6997 7 лет назад
Agreed. If you have to pierce a thicker skull, the Hornets might by a good choice. for the foil-thin craniums of tree rats a heavy hollow point lead pill is probably the better medicine.
@SquirrelHunter
@SquirrelHunter 7 лет назад
Not all hollow points are created equal either, as you will see in the next vid.

Happy Easter, bros of the Squirrel Hunter Channel! I was expecting some rabbit shooting today, but tree rats are good too 👍 Ayep, this only cements my disbelief of spitzer-type pellets for small game hunting. Sure, they can kill, but you need SURGICAL precision to one-shot the quarry. Heck, spitzers strike me more as cutting nerves for a kill instead of simply and efficiently smashing the brain into neuron paste. Ergo, don't use AP ammo on soft targets unless you have no choice.
@SquirrelHunter
@SquirrelHunter 7 лет назад
Cheers, Gunner, we will have a rabbit video at some point this year I think. I still prefer the hunter extremes in this test group. The terminators worked well also.

Hi, I do enjoy your channel. I;ve bought a couple of tins of H &N to try out in my Daystate Wolverine, so far so good on my local range. I’ll persevere with them as I haven’t tried them on Squirrels or rabbits yet. No reason to believe they’ll be any less accurate though. I’m getting to be a bit disappointed at the amount of misshapen pellets in a can of JSB Exact, that I;m getting recently. A ridiculous amount really. Easily found, as I wash, dry and oil my pellets. Thanks for an entertaining vid.

good video mate! I actually have some H&N Hornets in .177 caliber and I would say that they are exceptionally well made. In fact I would say they are the most deadly pellet in terms of penetration I have. I generally use Crosman Premier Ultra Magnum pellets, or Crosman hollow points, or even Crosman Destroyers all in .177 caliber. Out of those pellets the H&N Hornets are by far the highest quality pellet. Although the design of the pellet may not be great for long range shooting. That's where the ultra magnum comes in. The hornet in .177 caliber will easily go through almost anything you will normally shoot with that pellet.
@SquirrelHunter

Thank you ;-) Have you tried the hunter extremes?

Typical Friday night and nowt on the tv so I had a browse on RU-vid and found your video. Really enjoyed it and good commentary too, I nearly always use H&N but have never given the hornets a go. I have the bsa ultramax so I would of thought they would be ok through it as your r10 seems to like them, don’t know if my Weihrauch hw110 would be ok on them but I think I’ll give them a go and see as it never been that fussy on pellets anyway.

Another great video. Thanks for the content. Big fan. In reference to the two squirrels that needed additional shots; when they stick their limbs straight out like that (This is called 'fencing' and indicates neural trauma), they are not dead. They are not going anywhere, but in my experience they will stay alive for quiet some time. Anytime I see that 'frozen limb' behavior, I go out right away and give them another pellet. I know you know all this, but just wanted to mention it for others that are reading. Thanks again for the videos. ATB, Michael

As an RSPB member thank you for dealing with this invasive species. I say invasive, although I believe it was our Victorian ancestors who foolishly introduced them. Interesting field trial. One would have thought that the lack of exit wound meant that the pellet was dumping all of its energy in the quarry - and yet you had a couple of breathers on what should have been, instantly, lethal shots... +1 on the Hunter Extremes. I use them in my 15ft/lb (French legal, non FAC limit) .177 Air Arms TDR. I find them as accurate, over varying range, as a .177 (I'm getting around 850 ft/sec and the trajectory is pretty much flat between 10 and 35 yds) and they hit like a .22 - with less over penetration, especially on birds, than the FTTs or JSB exacts which my barrel also likes.
@SquirrelHunter
@SquirrelHunter 7 лет назад
I rate the hunter extremes very highly, did you see the vids I did with them?

Yep! sure did! I think I recommended them to you about a year or so ago and so I was particularly interested to see how your rifles would get on with them and their effect on squirrels in .22. They looked to have done the job for you on the rats in .177 as well.

Great video Nick! Is this a new camera? It seems like everything was so clear. Loved seeing and hearing the birds, I saw where someone said it looked like a documentary, I agree. Loved the shot at 35:55, that one was exceptional. The new pellets seem like they are a bit unreliable, I don't remember you having to go and "finish off" so many squirrels in the past couple hundred videos. :-) Did you happen to get my Facebook message? It is not "rated" in the sense that the kinetic energy has to be 16 joules - the declared amount of energy (that the specific gun is producing) is actually the recommended minimum (that is, if you shoot such pellet from a weaker gun, it might not expand and be efficient enough on the target). If you shoot it from, say, the 30 Joules rifle, the (expected) expansion will be greater, causing more damages to the target. These Hornets are (slightly) problematic because the tip tends to stick to the lead skirt even if fired from a powerful rifle (like my 25 Joules Diana N-TEC), whereas some other pellet-brands, like Minimag, for example behave differently - the tip LEAVES the lead right upon the impact and penetrates deeper (deeper than Hornet and deeper than the skirt) while the skirt gets heavily distorted causing slightly more damages than Hornet. At least, such is my experience.

Good video again, Squirrel Hunter, as usual. Did you do a Necropsy, on the frontal head shot ones, to find out the penetration of these Hornet pellets?
@SquirrelHunter
@SquirrelHunter 7 лет назад
Thanks, Tony ;-) No I didn't, as just about every pellet I've ever fired at that range will go through a squirrel skull easily. I knew their accuracy and they would go into the skull, I just didn't know how well they delivered a killing blow.

Would you say the Hornet is more of a penetrator round or more of a big-intial-impact round? Looks penetrator, but I don't know what that tip does
@SquirrelHunter
@SquirrelHunter 7 лет назад
It seems more of a penetrator and not as good as the hunter extremes for what I want.

Not sure I will be using those Hornets after seeing how they performed, your first time kill rate is usually much higher. so is it the pellet that does not give enough stopping power. Hunter extremes for me still

From my view. You seem to be having a few problems with the Hornets than you do with other pelletts. More unsures. Accuracy seems ok. But your doing a bit more checking and second shots.

Extra tips in a tin I have not seen yet, (2 tins). But it looks like somebody shook the hell out of that tin, with damaged pellets and tips that actually look crooked, (and probably do not fly well if they are crooked). At min 0:50, look at that "standing pellet" at 7:30 near the edge of the tin. Look at that huge dent on the head near the tip of it. If there are no dents on the tin,----somebody shook the hell out of those. I am sure they did not leave the factor that way. By the way, that tin is only about 25% full, (that much damage would happen easier with a 1/2 full tin when shaken, for example.), and my money says they were in perfect condition when they left the factory. Conclusion? Something happened to that tin----at home.
@SquirrelHunter
@SquirrelHunter 3 года назад
The tips looked fine to me. My camera isn't vertical over the pellets so might give the impression of "crooked", but the tips are hard and it would take some effort to bend them. Oddly enough I had been shooting them a lot to test so the tin would have less in it, so I don't see your point. The tin looked perfectly fine and there were that many loose tips I would have found at least a few bodies without one, but I never. I don't shake my tins of pellets. Conclusion? The factory had some issue and tips got into the tin.

In my experience of head shooting approx 2 dozen plus tree rats with the H&N Hornets from both my Hatsan Bullboss .25 caliber and my Umarex Origin .22 cal, in every instance the brass point and lead body seperate in the skull with the hard brass point always passing completely through and the lead pellet body, actually a hollow point without the brass tip expanding violently within the skull. Thus performing a 2 stage pass thru/energy dump both with one single pellet/shot for incredibly instantaneous "Not even a twitch" humane kills. In case you're interested the PolyMag plastic pointed tips do almost exactly the same thing, same performance as well. Both outstanding small game performing pellets out of fairly powerful air rifles. And more often than not also very accurate. At least out of the majority of my PCP's AND also even quite a few of my upper quality break barrels. 🖒🇺🇸
@danielsidaway719
@danielsidaway719 7 лет назад
The Hornet is my top round in .22 cal. as I have found it provides the quickest kill compared to others I have tested. I have never performed an autopsy but I believe that the brass point penetrates the skull much easier compared to mushroom rounds.
@SquirrelHunter
@SquirrelHunter 7 лет назад
That's interesting. Most of our pellets go straight through a side on squirrel skull, even sub 12. I know for a fact their skulls are thin and offer little resistance. The predator polymag shorts and baracuda hunter extremes seem to smash them more effectively than most.
@danielsidaway719
@danielsidaway719 7 лет назад
I've no doubt that virtually any pellet will do the job given the powerful PCP's you use. In my case, I am using a modified springer that puts out 25 joules with the 18 grain Hornet giving me about 12 yards of effective kill range with open sights zeroed in at 10 yards. In my brother-in-law's dairy barn we're dealing with huge urban grey squirrels and giant Norway and roof rats. The barn cats stay clear of them. When the cows are out to pasture, we use .22 rim fires but when the cows are in we switch to air. The vermin have the upper hand since silencers and night hunting are prohibited by law, so our cull numbers are substantially lower than yours. We rely heavily on watching what captures the attention of the barn cats to find our targets. A challenge indeed.

God, I find these video's of yours therapeutic. Are you noticing an increase in native birds, and Red Squirrels as a result of your activities in the permissions? Are females more valuable targets than the males? So many annoying questions, so many lovely shootings.
@SquirrelHunter
@SquirrelHunter 7 лет назад
I think there are more birds, but I have no proof. The reds are no where near us and what we do has no effect on their plight because of that. I like it better when we shoot the females, for obvious reasons.

Good episode Nick. Question, what do you find the ratio of males to females is? I have had a couple of good sessions this weekend, not great numbers but good efficient control in an area of historic damage to oaks and sycamores.
@SquirrelHunter
@SquirrelHunter 7 лет назад
Normally we get a lot of males and it seems rare to get more females in a group. Their main damage where I live is to trees and buildings etc.

cant say much bad about the H&N hornets .22 other than (never shot them) they are way to expensive to hunt with unless your hunting Coyotes maybe. I use the H&N baracuda hunters & the H&N crow magnums both hollow point and 18.21 gr. and have taken plenty of small game with then at a fraction ($6.39 @200 pellets) of the price.
