Just like in humans, anesthesia is used during surgeries and invasive medical procedures for pets. However, many noninvasive procedures that can be done while humans are awake cannot be performed accurately on alert pets. Generally, any procedure that requires a dog to stay perfectly still for a significant period of time requires anesthesia.
SEVN's Imaging and Surgery Regional Training Manager, Anaily, provides an overview of pet anesthesia.

My dog needs surgery on her neck. We did an EKCO and her heart has some damage from her early yrs of having heartworms. She is NOT on any medication for her heart as she does ok. Only coughs some when I put pressure on her chest cavity. but i am told she is good enough for surgery by a cardiologist. She also has had her spleen become enlarged after surgery. i am told this can be normal. hhmm is it? She is also an old girl but in relatively healthy shape otherwise. But I am nervous about it.

How many times can a dog go under Anesthesia? I had to take my dog last week to a vet. He went under that time for an xray. Now I have another appointment to get a CT Scan of his head, this coming week. He will need to get it one a second time. I'm concerned and not really feeling good about it. Need some advice please.. Thanks

Hi. I saw your other post about your dog’s swelling on the head/behind the eye. The recommendation of your veterinarian for a CT is a very reasonable next step to find out what can be done and what it means for your pup. To answer your question about multiple anesthetics is a month, yes, it can be done and is done all the time. I can’t say specifically for your pet (have never examined, seen blood work, etc) but generally, multiple anesthetic procedures in a short time is safe and routinely dine in practice.
