One of the best song's they ever made. Never got the credit it deserved. Another classic from an iconic singer/synth duo that brings back such happy memories of the 80's with leather trousers disco's watered down lager and just happy time's. I'm 59 and would have these day's back in a heartbeat.

@@LarsTragel-zh7ei It's the 1995 version from the Album "Alternative" -- *not* "Paninaro '95" from the 2003 album "PopArt". The most prominent difference between the original and this version is that "Versace" is missing in the lyrics ("Armani, Armani, Ah-Ah-Armani, Versace, Cinque" in the original). The 1995 version from the Album "Alternative" is more compressed than the original (note that while "Paninaro '95" was released to promote the 1995 album, the album itself carried only the 1995 which is also in this video). I think that for the video, they used even more compression. The sound lacks all subtlety and is "too much in your face". My preferred version is the 8:36 version from the album "Disco" (aka the "Italian remix", "Remixed by Pet Shop Boys and David Jacob"). That version also appears on other albums (called the "12" Mix" on the album "So Hard", with reasonable compression, and called the "Italian Remix" on "Further Listening", with notably more compression). *It's absolutely crazy that this was just a B side!*

If you were wondering, wiki says (9/24/21) Paninaro is a term that identifies a custom phenomenon born in the eighties in Milan and then spread first in the Milanese metropolitan area and then throughout Italy and the Canton Ticino. It was characterized by an obsession with designer clothing and adherence to a lifestyle based on consumption that involved every aspect of daily life. The phenomenon soon became known throughout Italy and led to the birth of magazines, films and television parodies.

This song reminds me of my teenage years in my hometown Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. They played this song like crazy in radio stations, clubs, etc. It also reminds me of a brother and sister that played The Pet Shop Boys religiously and many teenagers used to hang out at their house..glory days! Long live the 80's.

Pezzo che all'epoca avevo un po' sottovalutato rispetto alla produzione dei miei adorati Pet. Rivisto oggi sono 4.44 minuti di brividi !!!! Pezzo che, musicalmente parlando, rimane assolutamente attuale nonostante il soggetto si sia praticamente estinto. Viva gli anni 80 e la vita vera....fanculo la tecnologia moderna !!!! 20 years ago when I was a child, some Pet Shop Boys songs was constantly played in the radio, those really stuck in my head. However THIS is something new for me... I've replayed the game minutes ago, then decided to investigate because I didn't know any backstory about it. Just came here from YT reviews of NFM... mentioning level 6 music is a cover of a Pet Shop Boys song! :O I've played the original music aand... Mindblown... In the moment I heard 'Paninaro' in this context everything was clear. The vocals were somehow familiar... just wasn't sure where from... Anyways, the NFM soundtrack was really important shaping my musical taste :) :D

There is something that few people notice: the fact that the PSB sound is often based on high quality basslines. Chris is really a bass master! Along with their melodic talent, and Neil's lyrics (on most other tracks), it gives us an incredible pop band. This video is the only one, I think, that they directed. They should do more! Furthermore it always reminds me of my trip to the beautiful city of Milan. Wonderful.

@@iachi73boh, io ti rispondo presupponendo che tu non lo sappia veramente. I paninari erano un movimento giovanile nato a Milano nei primi anni 80. Per lo più teenagers.Si caratterizzavano per uno specifico dress code che si ispirava allo stile yankee/boscaiolo (per farla semplice). Gli outfit erano particolarmente costosi e quindi si inquadravano nella classe medio/alta della società. Avevano un linguaggio tutto loro e si radunavano nei pressi delle paninoteche o primi fast food dell'epoca(da qui il termine paninaro... Leggenda vuole che,i padri fondatori fossero un gruppo di ragazzi che avevano come base il bar "Il Panino" a Milano).Erano considerati una sorta di movimento edonista erroneamente inquadrato nella politica di destra, anche se effettivamente erano contro i movimenti giovanili della sinistra. Il fenomeno prese poi piede nel resto dell'Italia con a volte denominazioni diverse... Tipo a Roma si facevano chiamare "tozzi". Il fenomeno ebbe una grande risonanza tant'è che uscirono anche fumetti e film dedicati. Il tutto durò quasi un decennio
