I remember back in the day watching an interview with Pet Shop Boys about why they covered this song. They said they felt U2 were a "Vegas act". It's now 2023 and WOW how right they were!!!
Uh uh. PSB wanted to turn a rock song into a disco song thinking rightly it's going to be a hit. Bono took the song as sarcasm but after an explanation f2f, all was well.
Pet Shop Boys versus U2. No contest... the Pet Shop Boys are king ! They've so many iconic songs that it would take an age to list them all. One, and Pride are U2s best, but you could name over 10 timeless classics from the Pet Shop Boys.
I love both artists, but you should revisit U2 some more: With or Without You, I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For, Where the Streets Have No Name, I Will Follow, Pride (In the Name of Love), Sunday Bloody Sunday, New Year's Day, Mysterious Ways, One, Beautiful Day, Walk on, Stuck in a Moment You Can't Get Out Of, Vertigo, Every Breaking Wave
Summer of 1991: I was about to turn sixteen and the first video jukebox showed up at my favourite beach bar. I think my now long gone friends still hate me for playing this song at least 10 times per day 🤣
I'd never heard Fallen Angel before, so just youtubed it and yes I can see how it goes well with this song. Thanks for the recommendation I've now added the Bee Gees Fallen Angel to my song list. 👍
@@toddhunter3137 First time I heard Fallen Angel I found it unique since The Gibbs hadn't done anything like it before or after with the exception of maybe Angel of Mercy, a rare solo song by Maurice Gibb and his daughter Samantha.
I remember that in my youth I was going to dance to a gay disco called Bunker. The day the screen unfolded on the dance floor and the video started, my mind exploded in multiple colors. Unforgettable
@@osvaldojoseecheverriacolla2231 Both versions are great (the original version of "Streets" is timeless) You say complete nonsense here, how can you compare rock and pop style with each other? BTW Do you even know that this version is composed of two songs, so this is something completely different?
@@marty6945 U2 s version was a commercial thing, they wore american hats and it have been criticaded by psb#1 themselves. I m sure this version is better than others.
The insolence (and the genius of Chris Lowe) to reinvent 2 already perfect (and almost sacred) songs from giants of rock and pop .PSB's skill and bold irreverence to push their covers further into unexpected territories is a gift to us fans
Forever the 80s the best decade.
Marvelous song! Just listen to the background music....there are so many layers of different tones and sounds. It keeps amazing me! The music video is also fascinating. The high energy and sharp colours just blows right from your screen. Too bad they don't make these kinds of songs anymore. Viva 1991!!😃🌞🌞
@@turokforever007 Pure jealousy. Bono knew that Pet Shop Boys were more respected in Britain, especially around 1989-1990 when U2 had gotten a lot of negativity for their stale earnest sound lol
Mega mashup ! Not only did Pet Shop Boys combine Bob Crewes 60’s iconic “CTMEOOY” with one of U2’s most brilliantly bombastic stadium raves “WTSHNN” but even managed to incorporate 50’s SoCal car culture tributes and clips from U2’s “The Unforgettable Fire” video , that itself was heavily influenced by Godfrey Reggio’s often copied by never duplicated “Koyaanisqatsi” . Brilliant all around !!!
+richard hall It really is not hard to pull that off. U2 transitioned from "Satellite of Love" to "Bad" to "Ruby Tuesday" to "Sympathy for the Devil" in one song completely spontaneously at a live show with no noticeable joins.
I feel like this could’ve easily been played in a GTA radio station. Especially Vice City. Or Non Stop Pop FM in GTA V. It’s such a good song to ride to 🌇🏍
This came about because Bono dissed disco acts like the Pet Shop Boys as rubbish so Neil and Chris decided to record a disco version of this mixed in with Can't Take My Eyes Off You to show that 'serious' songs and disco can blend quite nicely
Lyrics: I want to run, I want to hide I want to break down all the walls that hold me inside I want to reach out, and touch the flame Where the streets have no name I want to feel the sun on my face I see the dust cloud disappear without a trace I want to take shelter from poison rain Where the streets have no name Where the streets have no name Where the streets have no name We're still building, then burning down love Burning down love And when I go there, I go there with you Where the streets have no name Can't take my eyes off of you I love you baby, and if it's quite alright I need you baby, to warm a lonely night So let me love you baby Let me love you The city's a flood, our love turns to rust We're beaten and blown by the wind, trampled in dust I'll show you a place, high on a desert plain Where the streets have no name Where the streets have no name Where the streets have no name We're still building, then burning down love Burning down love And when I go there it's all I can do Where the streets have no name I can't take my eyes off of you Love you, baby, let me love you Where the streets have no name Where the streets have no name Where the streets have no name Where the streets have no name Where the streets have no name
Listening in 2023. I bought one cassette with their greatest hits in 1991. I also had their long play "Actually" since 1987 and the single *domino dancing" and other long plays of them
If they'd done this to With or Without You, I'd hate it... but this is an extreme guilty pleasure. If nothing else, it has the powerful beat the original U2 song never had.
