My Turtle is 11 years old and I wonder if it's possible that she became tame on her own? lol She is just always surrounded by people and likes to watch us when we're eating and stuff. Sometimes I 'pet' her and she doesn't mind, she's also NEVER tried to bite me. Turtles are so lovely, I love them alot TT
hobichu So can you give me some ideas please.. My turtle is just about a year old and (I believe the turtle is a female) Shes always hiding in her shell when I hold her but she never tried to bite me. I know she’s scared but idk how to make her not scared..
Melon Cherry. Uhm just make sure your turtle is around people alot. You can keep picking her up and try to make her get used to it, always approach her from an angle where she can see you approaching so you don't scare her. Please be careful tho, because turtles can bite hard.
+Earthling1984 I think they shouldn't be handled daily. Some turtles can be but just a few of them since some turtles are prone to stress, right? I've heard that handling some turtles so much can cause stress.
Simple solution to all this... put your tank in a busy part of your house.. they will be way way less stressed when handled. So many people put their tanks is a room out of main living environments.. although this is a good environment for then it creates many issues when they come in contact with people. You're getting it as a pet. Just like a dog needs to be house broken a turtle needs to be socialized broken. Putting their rank is some far quite corner of the house is the exact opposite of what you want.
Hey i did what you did in the video and after 2 days my pet turtle was handle and tame. Thanks for your video for helping my turtle handle and tame it really works upload some more good relaxing video bye.
I found a tiny (quarter sized) hatchling EPT in my (salt water) pool and rescued him a few weeks ago. He is living in a big plastic tub which I keep in my bathtub and seems to be doing well. Thank you SO much for your video. I love your idea of the small container and can't wait to try it!
I plan to let him go when he is larger. He has grown from 6 grams to 11 in the past month. With a 90% mortality rate for hatchlings, I think he has a better chance of living a long life. He is living now in a large plastic underbed container which I have filled with pond water and pond plants and he is outside in that from the time I awaken until dark when he comes indoors to sleep in a large crystal bowl filled in a similar manner. He is eating well, both the plants from the pond and commercial food.
@@annehenderson6306 You did the right thing. I'm in a similar situation. I found a hatchling painted turtle in my driveway in bad shape. He now lives in my 110 gallon deck pond during the day and in the house at night. Too many racoons on the deck at night. You probably saved his life.
This really helped me. I have a 13 year old daughter that really wants a turtle and i wasn't sure if it would be a suitable pet for her, not because she is immature, but because i wasn't sure if it would be 'intimate' enough for her. I think i will go to the pet store with her on Monday so she can choose the one she likes :) Thank you so much!!
don't pick up your turtles too much, most turtles generally don't like to be handled as much so don't pick them up too often or it causes stress to them :)
shivani shetty I've had mine for 9 months but I rarely hold her.. she goes CRAZY when I'm near her tank, but if I hold her she makes this noise lol she's like 3 -4 inches already.. she fell in my pool around February
+WhoozyOMO : CS:GO n Stuff well that's probably because you rarely go near her.. but what happened was my turtle died recently because she had high temperature from when I got her and so the doctor was telling me she wouldn't survive.. :( rn since I felt really bad about what happened my aunt gifted me two new healthy turtle and they aren't scared of me but they try playing with me.
shivani shetty my Jesse was caught by my daughter in our pool, she was about an inch and a half at the most.. it's been since February and she's already about 4 inches. She is in our kitchen and I'm the one who feeds her, so when she sees me she goes to the top of the water and splashes to get my attention to feed her. But if I pick her up she makes this cat like sound, I'll set her down on the rock we have in her tank and she will swim to the bottom where she thinks she's safe but comes back up 30 seconds later expecting food. She is VERY greedy lol. But hearing that others have died is strange because honestly the first month's I was hoping it would die because I only kept it for my kids, but now it's like MY pet. I like feeding her live fish because I want her to keep her natural instincts but annoying the same time because it's less like a pet and more like a decoration subscription. Have fun with yours.
@@melissaschlager3477 Oh you are the one that commented thinking this little container was my turtles tank... LMFAO... I say in the beginning of the video this is just a small container for handling your turtle, and to fill it with tank water. Did you not even watch or listen to 30 seconds of this video before being negative and complaining about things you are wrong about? Grow up...
‘They may push you sometimes’ my turtle pushes me as hard as she can while trying to chop off my fingers with her mouth you probably understand now why im here :/
I've had a female and 2 males for the past 8 years now. Two of them love when I pet them on the shell and when I rub their necks with my finger, while one of the males isn't a big fan of being handled at all. The female has also started coming over to my feet in search for me to pet her whenever I'm cleaning their tank
Jared Steltz hi! If you are still using this account, can you give me some tips? I just got a baby red eared slider and I’m curious how to not make them so skittish!
he's right to a point, from what i know a smaller tank will stun their growth so they don't grow as much. This isn't healthy though, and can make the turtle grow sickly. I believe the size is ever 10 gallons per inch of the turtle shell..
males usually have long nails. you may be able to clip them. look up some tutorials and see if there is any info. I have never clipped turtle nails before.
thank you.this realy helped me.at first my turtles where always flapping their feet at me when I tried to pick them up, but now they feel soo calm in my hands.
Thanks for the great advice :) I've never owned a turtle before and you seem pretty educated. I was going to see if maybe you could give me tips on how to keep my careless neighbors (or it used to be theirs now it's mine starting tonight :)) red eared slider alive and warm and fed till I can but the proper equipment (next week) they weren't feeding it and had no heat source whatsoever they finally are giving me the little guy after I got onto them enough about it. Keep in mind this little fella is 4 inches so he must be just a baby. Any tips would be appreciated. I hope I can keep him alive till I get the stuff then he'll thrive :)
+Plecos Plus it was either i took it then with what little i had and did what i could until things arrived or i could have waited and let those pieces of crap care for him which would have killed him. he is alive and healthy now because i took him in. learn to read, it should help you in life
I have two pet painted turtles they are babies and their names are tucker and tamika they are pretty tame we have had the for about a month and they eat out of my hand and they don’t go in their shell when we pick them up also we can pet their heads and they enjoy it
Oh...so that’s why my turtles so scared when I try to pick her up. My mom always said to not touch her to much or she’ll give her away! Smh, this helps at least!
Loved the video man. I don't have a turtle yet, but I'm planning on getting one soon. I was wondering, do turtles like being out of water much? and if so, how long can they stay out of water? thanks
Frozen Flames Cool. Most important for turtles is a huge and properly setup tank. 40+ gallons for a baby. 100+ gallons for an adult (depends on species. RES may even need over 125 gallons). Properly heated basking area with UVB, and, double filtration for tank size.
although maybe the water might transmit it as well because the faeces in it but like he said just wash your hands after and try not to put your hands near your face
i have a turtle, just wash your hands before and after handling them and you'll be fine. They are fun, adorable pets but make sure you research before getting one
Thanks man I got 2 yellow belly sliders a month ago and I never had turtles or held them before but since I watched this video 1 of them soften up with me but the other is still kinda scared of me so thanks again.
My daughter has (I thnk) a baby mud turtle? Whatevr it is, he's very calm an kick'd back all the time! He seems to be ok w/pet'n an snuggling. It's the cutest thing I've evr seen. Blows my mind that he sleeps in her arm pit! lol 😆 Oh an he LUV'S scrambled eggs 4 breakfast! Too cute!
Found?!? Never put a wild animal in a cage!!!!! Only keep pets that were *born in captivity*!!! Release that wild turtle where you found it, immediately!
My turtle and i dont really have a relationship. I feel like he hates me. He used to hiss a lot when i picked him up to clean the tank. He also gets super scared when i walk pass(scared that ill pick him up?). He also scratches me alot too with a pick him up. His long nails leave marks but sont break skin. Now he is not as scared. Doesnt hiss anymore and i silently creep past him so he doesnt get scared of me. How do i have a better relationship with him? I feel bad for making him uncomfortable. He used to have a friend but it died from drowning so i want to give him the best i can 😭
You can but the question is should you? I'll go for NO since interaction with turtle can cause salmonella and it's fatal so... better to prevent than cure.
I have four pet turtles two yellow belly sliders and two red eared sliders and I’ve had them since around Last May and two still not used to me they try to bite me every chance they get is that normal and btw there all in a tank together so is this normal?
I don't really handle turtles. I don't consider them pets to hold. But, I do handle time to time. Never been bit. Perhaps yours just doesn't like being held up in the air. They are used to being in water / on ground.
I had a red eared slider that would swim along the side of his tank as you walked by and beg for food. My mom was feeding him every time she walked by, she almost killed him!
Thanks for the awesome video! I've been using your advice go tame my baby red eared slider. I'm getting a southern painted next month and I'll do the same for it!
hmm, good question. I've never delt with that. You may try just what I said in this video, and also offer treats while in the tupperware while out of the cage. Do this for a month or so, without trying to pick him up with your hands. After a month see if he still tries to bite you.
I've had my new red eared slider almost 2 weeks now and he's still afraid of me. Yeah, maybe I need to do this. I have a travel box that I put him in when I feed him. Might use it for that as well.
i have two tiny turtles, about the same size as yours! they are really heathy but i wanted to ask you if i was feeding the right things and if you have any recomendations! i bought food from the store and it comes with pellets, TINY baby dead shrimp and tiny baby dead meal worms and they love it but idk if that is right cause you NEVER trust pet store people!!!!!!!!!!
Ok, there tank takes up most of my room and it has a filter and a bunch of other things! I have two baby yellow bellied sliders!! And they have a heat lamp over there basking area
My turtle is crazy in the water and follows me when I go across the room, but when I take him out he goes in his shell and gets so scared. And I don’t want to scare him too much so 8 put him back in the water and he comes swimming towards me.
ECS TASY No, you won't die, probably. But, if you get salmonella you will wish you were dead. I got salmonella once years ago from a turtle. I was unable to leave the bathroom for about 10 hours. All I could do was keep throwing up for hours and feeling like I was going to die. Eventually, the next day, it stopped. So, stop kissing your turtle.
No u won't die! It'll just probs make u so sick you'll Thnk your gonna die!! Hurry, rinse your mouth out w/soap, Fast!! Repeat daily. lol 😝 Jk! Or am I?? Hummm??
I agree with the claws idea, however I don't find his claws all that long. His shell, although hard to see on video, does cave in a bit. Like you said, that isn't foolproof, but it does stick in, not flat or stick out like a females. I actually purchased and have owned this guy for over 4 years (got him May 21, 2009). For being 4 years old, he is still tiny, I don't think a female would stay that small either.
Eastern Painted? Where do you live? Here in Michigan, it's illegal to sell normal painted, since they're native to our state, we can only get western painted, but not in pet shops. I'm getting an African sideneck turtle soon! :D good vid btw!
I have three 2 red ears and a painted. My largest and most recent addition seems to be very angry and scared. It's understandable since when I rescued her I found her shoved into the back corner of an attic living in pitch black water and no light. Some people are just cruel no other words for it.
If you still have your turtle and are still concerned, If it is in the cold months it might be preparing to hibernate so don't freak out too bad. They dig at the ground, don't eat much if at all, and are slow/sluggish at this time and are very stressed. Try to keep the water at a warmer 70 to 80 degrees and make sure you have UVB and a heat source to keep them healthy, I hope I helped.
someone posted a video of a guy pouring water on a small turtles back to make him "dance" and I thought it looked like abuse,is it? It looked like an involuntary reaction to me
If they have a huge tank, they get huge, and if they have a small tank, they dont get as big, follow me? so tank size makes a difference but after a while they will get pretty big.
Nine years ago, that i had five red eared sliders, I had one in my hands and I was runnin' around like a lunatic. So, i droped him accidentaly and his leg got swallen... I was praying for him to get better and he did. However some years leter, they all died one by one... I still don't know what went wrong...
+alex horvath many species can live together. just try to get similar size turtles and they need plenty of space. two sliders would need a 175+ gallon tank.
I have a question if I had a big turtle and you said: u don’t need to take them out from the tank to watch tv next to you my turtle tank is very big like a big box but plastic and round so how do I put him or her cuz I have two next to me do I put them on the floor?
You use water from your sink or hose. You add dechlorinator to remove the chlorine and chloramines from the water. I've seen turtles in pet stores ranging from $20 to $100. Keep in mind the adult size of the turtle: you need 10 gallons per inch of turtle (measure the length of the shell). If a turtle is going to grow to 10 inches, you will need a 100 gallon tank, along with a canister filter that has biological filtration.
***** DGxF56 I'm also a fan of the ReptoMin turtle food. My painted can eat the small pellets in one bite, which keeps the tank much cleaner, and the pellets are large enough you can hand feed the turtle, too. Hand feeding is important, IMO, since it teaches the turtle to trust you. My turtle knows me and gets excited when I come up to the tank; she knows who her Human is! :-)
how do i make it go in the tank? it's too scared, when i put it in it was so nervous and was trying to escape, doesn't that harm the turtle? i don't want to hurt it
I need your help!! My turtle back end of the shell is bendy. Is that supposed to happen? I have proper lighting and lands. I mean I didnt then I moved him into a proper place. What should I do? There r no white spots on his shell. Should I be worried?
Hey, i have RES for about 5 years now. I changed about 3 filters so far becus he bites and destroy everything. 1st was a submersible filter when he was really tiny. 2nd was an OHF, which overflowed many times all over the floor becus his poop clogged up the filter sponge really fast. Now im using a sunsun canister filter, and he keeps pulling apart and dislodge(?) the intake pipe I have to restart everything becus of the siphoning, and when I do, he destroys it again. I really need help on why he always does that. He seems move active and aggressive now, keeps swimming around and following me whenever i walk pass the tank. Compared to when I first got the filter, he seems more calm. Whenever I give him pellet food, he eats a few and stops eating. He doesnt like to eat smaller fish as well. He's a really fussy eater. But when I give him those shrimps, he gets them all , no question bout' that. I feed him twice a day, morning and evening. Anything strange things I'm doing wrong?
AntiqueSwift You are probably feeding too much. A couple pellets once a day is more than enough. Weird he attacks all filters. Not sure how to stop him from doing that.
Litzy Martinez Watch my turtle care videos. I hope he got you a 55 gallon or larger tank, good filtration, 100% dry basking area, UVB lighting, a way to test basking temperature. Should have also cycled the tank for 2 to 3 weeks before adding any aquatic life. For food, don't overfeed. Any turtle pellets are fine and some insects or minnows make good treats.
Sorry if I seemed a bit pompous, I was just trying to help with information. It's your turtle, and identification via RU-vid obviously isn't foolproof. I was going by the length of the front claws (males tend to have much longer claws than females), the lack of a discernible indentation on the bottom of the shell (though that isn't the best identifier) and the short-ish tail. I've had painters that were two years old, just as small, and the claws were dead giveaways.
Turtles are often low cost. But, a proper turtle setup is easily $500+. Most pet turtle species can live 50+ years with proper care. Sadly, many pets are kept improperly and don't live very long.
