This time on Pete And His bus I suffer with a medical condition called Tractus Insania.. (Yes that a real thing....not....) It means I've become obsessed with, you've guessed it.... Tractors! So our vehicle featured this month is non other than a 1950 Ferguson Tractor.. But why did I really take on this project.......
Big thanks go to:

About Pete And His Bus: Pete is a normal (ish) guy who has a big passion for old vehicles and particularly old buses. He is NOT a trained mechanic nor is he a professional restorer. He enjoys converting vehicles but he can not promise that what he is doing is going to work on your vehicle. Nor can he promise that you won’t harm yourself if you were you to attempt the things he does. He recommends that you are safe and responsible with machinery and equipment even if you’ve seen him messing about with it. A workshop and it’s content can be a dangerous place. If you are in doubt about your own vehicle, contact a professional for advice.

Hi Pete. This tractor is a TEF 20 which were all built with the Freeman - Sanders diesel engine built for the Standard Motor company. So this is not a TVO model and that plunger you said was a TVO adjuster is actually called a Ki-gas pump that sprays a fine mist of diesel into the intake manifold from the auxillary tank to assist cold starting.

First and only tractor I ever drove whilst hay-timing was an old grey Fergie in 1986 thanks for the teenage memories 😜 My mates dad had a working fleet of 6 of them thought they were the best most versatile tractor. One from the war ran on paraffin due to fuel being in short supply.

Another great video, Pete. When I was young I also adored tractors. Our house backed on to fields and I loved to watch the farmer when he was out and about. Gradually, though, as I grew up, my love of buses grew and my fascination with tractors diminished to the point where I now find vintage tractors interesting, but no more than that. I feel that it is true to say that I am an Ex-tractor Fan! Oh, that sucks! 🤣 EDIT: Oh nuts, I just spotted the comment from an hour previous. Ah well! 🙄

Enjoyed the video I stumbled across it earlier! The part you took off the dash is actually the ki gas pump, on the early TEF tractors this was a starting aid that fired diesel over the glow plug through the air intake. The original diesel engine was probably replaced with this one which went in commercial vehicles. I would say your tractor is in fact a TEF diesel model you can tell by serial number above steering wheel if you go on friends of Ferguson site you will be able to tell it's DOM by the numbers 😀
@PeteAndHisBus
@PeteAndHisBus Год назад
Hey thanks for watching, use you are right an all accounts but it is a TED and it was originally tvo, so no idea why it had the Ki gas for a diesel
@andrewmcconnell8675

I too would say it was originally a diesel, one example reason is the extra studs under the back end, they were a late model strength improvement.

Many people around my age remember learning to drive on a little grey Fergie at whatever age they could operate the clutch and brake pedals, it was 12 for me. Even a TVO could be awkward to start if damp and cold. Often needed a good half hour running on petrol, depending on temperature, once the electrics had been dried first before switching to TVO. Putting the distributor cap and HT leads in the bottom oven of the kitchen range dried them out quickly. Strong arms, back and shoulders for swinging the handle. You should watch a tractor building competition at a county or agricultural show, a Fergie built from completely dismantled to running tractor by a team of chaps and chapesses in about 10 minutes.

Wow. What a blast-from-the-past! My first job straight out of high school was working for a river conservation authority, mostly driving a Massey-Ferguson tractor, made in Woodstock Ontario. As far as I can tell, it was the same model as the one you have. It was a powerful little beastie--it could drag a tree plough over hilly terrain with ease, or mow an entire field in a couple of hours with a 6' pan mower. Oh yes, I think the red colour on was added later--the standard grey was the only colour choice back in the 1950s if I remember correctly.

If it's hard to start, try sticking a hot air gun into the air intake. We used to use a flaming rag soaked in diesel by the air intake on our forklifts that wouldn't start in the winter!

Superb Left field vid Pete - absolutely love what you’ve done to the Ferg, well done you,and for all the right reasons 9and for catching the thing about the mask when spraying before you release the vid 😊) If only I could “refurb” “Captain”, the workhorse that I was allowed to “drive” with my Grandfather when I was three years old - you’ve done the right thing! Give Compo some T-Cut and a machine polish as compensation - love Compo ! Keep ‘em comin’ and, as Blakey from ‘on the Buses’ would say “Get dat Bus outta here” (and start earning quiddage in the Festive Season!) JCHK

Still loving your work Pete. Have you considered an offshoot or retitle for the series? Painting with Pete? Just a thought as a working title. Then, what is 'preasure?' The moment that you take pleasure in the pressure? Finally why do tractor rear tyres go that way around with the V digging into the mud rather than pointing forward like arrows. Asking for a friend.

Disappointed. 1. No “Reaload Paintgun” 2. Nothing else, loved it. My 1st GF lived on a farm so many memories of her dad starting tractors like that (it starts easier if you hold a oxy acetylene torch in front of the air intake 🤣 and shout “come on you f’ker”) I loved the video Pete!

That was really beautiful. It's good to see old equipment being brought back to life. There's a good 50 years of life in it for your grand children to enjoy it. It'll get you out of the snow this winter. Oh btw could you do a track list, love the music too 🤣😁 I watched it a few times just for the music. Best wishes for Christmas and New year if you don't do another video before then.

The tractor is just a nice little change from all that bus stuff hey Pete And no lift needed to paint it Thought the little paint brush , was that some sort of self punishment 😂😂 I managed to by myself a battery pop rivet gun this week It is a little heavy but so good 😍😍👍👍 Maybe a bit of aero start for the cold weather before you destroy the starter
@PeteAndHisBus
@PeteAndHisBus Год назад
The little brush was easiest around all the nuts and bolts. I'm going to replace the starter to a Ford 4000 one. It bolts straight on and has much more oomph. Not a massive fan if the old aero start. Can fatigue the engine quite easily. Thanks for your advice and for watching!

Didn’t think I’d ever say this but that’s a lovely tractor. If you sold it after the fix up is complete would you see a return on your investment? Also I reckon weddings would hire it for photos and indeed transport. If a farm trailer bar was put on the back then it could be hired for events, a few hay bales for seating. You’d probably also specifically get hired for events on fields to pull other vehicles out of trouble, including double decker busses.

I would sell with profit but that wasn’t really the aim here. She’s going to be around just for pure pleasure. The buses can take care of business 👍 thanks for watching

Nice little tractor :) The 23C Engine is despite its reputation a great engine. If you keep having issues with starting, check if all 4 glow plugs work and work well it absolutely needs those even if one glow plug isn't heating properly its going to have a hard time not only when its cold out. Also those engines do have a timing chain which lengthens over time which means re-timing the injection pump is neccessary - on an older engine turning the pump ~1mm towards the engine (clockwise when looking at it from the back) will do wonders on how it runs and especially starts.
