I'm really glad Noah threw the issue of policy specificity in Pete's face. Pete needs to do some serious work on that. He can scream the words "values' and "broad strokes" until he's blue in the face but there's no way that supporters of candidates of Yang, Warren, or Sanders are going to get thrilled about a candidate like Pete unless he's got some strong and specific policy positions. Personally, I think it's ridiculous, but those Warren/Sanders voters can be very stubborn about this and Pete needs all the support he can get if he wants to be the nominee.
@rossclark9155
@rossclark9155 5 лет назад
@@nobodynowhere21 He does. You are getting ahead of the conversation. However, go to www.meetpete.org and use the center Blankfield and put your policy question there and the database will cough up an answer. People eventually will know to go there until he determines when to get talking specifics. His big problem right now is getting black voters to listen to him. And black voters aren't disposed to a bunch of promises about programs. Not at this point. And there is a really smart take away from that fact.

@@silentpredator9082 I used to think of myself as a centrist. But honestly, since the late eighties/early nineties Republicans have become unvotable to me. They moved further and further to the right and anywhere else in the world the majority of today's Republicans would be considered right-wing extremists. Just a notch or two below Nazis or religious nut-jobs like Jihadists. The only thing that gives me hope is that Republicans usually don't win the public vote, so the majority of Americans reject their BS. Yet, they manage to remain in power, because of our flawed political system.
@silentpredator9082
@silentpredator9082 5 лет назад
@@dsugioaga I acknowledge where you are coming from as a voter but this isn't a healthy viable alternative. You see the right seem extreme because that's how it was supposed to be. Some cases need radical ideologies that are self centered. Given that, I would like to add the fact that not addressing the issues of Republican candidates is not an option. That's a mistake waiting to happen. If we do not check the other half of our electoral system then, there's no real alternative and a dual party system becomes a single party system. Then, what happens? What if a democrat gets cocky and mess up? We have no one else to elect. No real choice. That's how dictators rise and wars start.

I hope whatever the democrats come up with will be more than finding the winning ticket but actual reform. Obama tried to tackle the issues but the whole framework made that impossible and the direct result has been an insane roll back, even more significant than the roll back of the Bush jr. era. The system is broken, else an imbecile like Trump would have been impeached for his actions and not just cricised for being the wrong kind of fraud for that office. If the next democratic president just tries to continue the wrecked system, the president after him will be to Trump what Trump was to Bush. All that assumed Trump will leave office at all and US americans will start to bother about him breaking the constitution, which is far from a sure thing at this point.

That's not what I see. I see many conservatives giving themselves over to panic, irrationality, and idolatry in the face of the changes they see coming: a loss of power to the white Christian male, a threat to the myth of American militarism, of the cult of economic success, of white supremacy and hetero-normativity. The waging of the finger is a finger pointing into the dark parts of the 'conservative' legacy. @@emsleywyatt3400 This is mostly correct - different states _do_ have more or less power in the Electoral College than they should, but it's deeper (and worse) than that, thanks to the abhorrent 'winner take all' system. For those who don't know, whichever candidate wins the popular vote in a given state gets _all_ of that state's EC votes (which are awarded in part by population), regardless of how close the popular vote was in that state. What this ends up meaning is if you vote for the candidate that lost your state, your vote was effectively overturned and given to whichever candidate won your state. Nature strives for androgyny. Meaning a balance of extremes: females being more masculine and males more feminine, to ensure the most optimal evolution. It's no different in politics. It tends to swing between democrat and republican every 8 years, to ensure the most optimal evolution. Trump needed to be president in 2016, in order to give rise to democratic leaders such as Buttigieg.

His ability to explain his ideas in such a simple way is extraordinary. Especially when it comes to the way he is tackling the rhetoric regarding climate change and climate justice. He’s right, the media has, for far too long, been focusing on things that feel far from our reach and, therefore, not as our problem even though all of us are already getting affected by it. I love how he also admitted that he’s learnt things the hard way, not claiming to be perfect but still trying his best to go beyond good intentions. Saying that it’s not enough to not be racist but that we need to be anti-racist is another simple but powerful idea and a lot of politicians have missed the mark there as well. I’m betting on him slaying in the debates... I just hope he gets enough attention to be able to make a change. His book has been fascinating to read, considering it’s non-fiction and that he talks a lot about issues that normally put me to sleep.

I think it's crazy from the polling results on Dem side it seems that Joe Biden is leading. He was Obama's Vice President, and he's weird with personal space. That's really all that I've gathered from him. Next is Burnie Sanders, this I understand. Very vocal, very hard hitting, has a charisma and has held the same unpopular positions throught out his career yet compromises to move forward. and then we have the slew of democrats that want to be the change but have as many faults as qualities in their careers.... and all the way at the bottom we have Buttigieg who is usually listed off as a "check list" candidate, but once you hear him speak, has as much substance as Bernie Sanders. I really do hope the Dem Party doesn't shoot itself in the other foot this time.... it sure seems, according to the polls, that they will.

Mayor Pete is eloquent, sincere, and passionate about his views. I don't think he will have any problem handling the toxicity of our current political climate. In all honesty, I think that he would have a positive effect on our political behavior towards others as well as be a strong role model for all Americans, instead of just those his party represents. Initially, I was all for Bernie. But now, I'm torn between the two. The more I hear mayor Pete talk, the more I like him. If Bernie ends up getting the nomination, I think he should get Buttigieg on the ticket as his VP. I think that the two of them together would be able to defeat Trump and Pence in the upcoming election.

@Daniel Brown Did you just say you're way to the left of Bernie? Who do you even support? And as for Obama, he brought deployed troops down from 100,000 to less than 10,000. American casualties greatly decreased under him. There's plenty to criticize about his foreign policy, you don't have to lie and stretch the truth. I never said Bush started conflict in Syria and Libya, I said previous administrations. The whole area had been destabilized by the US for years, to say Obama started the conflict there is ridiculous. Don't tell me to educate myself when you clearly haven't. www.militarytimes.com/news/your-military/2016/07/06/a-timeline-of-u-s-troop-levels-in-afghanistan-since-2001/

I agree with the reframing of the global warming issue. We started on the wrong foot by telling people we are "killing the Earth". That's neither true nor inspiring. The Earth will outlive humanity. We are simply making Earth uninhabitable for humans. This is about saving ourselves, not saving the Earth.

Buttigieg said if he got the nom he would balance the ticket with a female VP so not very likely. That being said I like Yang, seems like a cool dude.

@@meankitten Yang has some good aspects like the idea of a basic income, but him not supporting medicare for all is a big bummer. The idea of giving all regulation a sunset provision seems really dumb to me.
