This was the closer for Pete Candoli's Tribute Dinner 1990. Pete, Conte, and Stan jam with "hothouse." I put this up a month after Pete died in 2008. Sad he did not get a chance to see it...
I love this video. Takes me back. I had the good fortune of playing with the Condoli brothers when I was a young man. My dad of the same name (Smith Dobson) was a world renown pianist and hosted a great steady gig in San Jose called the Garden City. The Condoli brothers were frequent guests and my mom and dad made a live album there with the Condoli Brothers. Great album. Stan Getz performed with my dad at Garden City too as did many other greats. I love Stan sitting in on this video. Love seeing him knock back the brothers with every note. Stan sounds gorgeous. No ego. No grandstanding. Just playing the real shit. People don't play like that anymore.
Yes, I know who you are. I went with Pete once or twice, I am his wife. I knew Smith well, what a great musician and your mom a great singer. They loved their kids and now your all grown up. Hold old are you?
This was at the Tribute Dinner given for Pete in October 1990...Yes, Stan loved Pete. I called him when we were getting it together with Gary Chens help, and asked him to come and he did. He died the following year.
Hi, I'm sorry I am just reading this now. It's very nice to make your acquaintance online! I'm 41 years old and years ago switched to the tenor sax! I still play drums though. Pete and Conte were so kind to me when I was 17 and played the gig with them and my dad at Garden City. Truly just the sweetest and most supportive cats, and great players! It was an honor to play with them!
Wow! Great stuff! It's wonderful to not only hear, but to see these guys cook. I've always been a big Conte Candoli fan and saw him only with the Kenton band many times. Also, saw brother Pete once with Kenton. This is great, great jazz. Conte and Bill Perkins did an album, arranged by Shorty Rogers, called "The Five". If you can find it, buy it! My island record.
Hey, this is amazing, I'm reading about this right now in Gary Chen's book They Call Me Stein on Vine. Haha I love living in Hollywood and learning about all the history.
You ARE the man for not only HAVING these videos, but the good taste to share them with the world. Thank you very much. I'm amazed o how many videos of the Condoli brothers playing together there were. They worshiped each other.
@Tony7840 The Findleys are pretty awesome too, but these two are amazing as well! Does anyone know who's playing lead in the band? That was some WAILING at the beginning of this clip!
Stan's health was starting to deteriorate at about this time. He kept it pretty close to his vest and only pure Getz fans noticed any difference in his playing.
