One of the best episodes to date. As much as I love empathizing with the guests over their blocks, I really enjoyed a break to listen to psychedelic and comedic philosophy.
Neal, you're hitting gold with these. At first I thought, 'Another podcast of comedians?' ... then watched it... totally different. Doing it with blocks is genius. They're all forced to be real. You are a genius, Neal. Thank you.
Just discovered this podcast, and it's right up my alley! Wow, Pete Holmes... He's been one of my favorites for the past couple of years but lately listening to him on podcasts has been so healing for me as a woman to hear a man be able to conceptualize and verbalize and express his trauma and healing so vulnerably. but with pride and humor and showing that deep sense of pain thats there in the depths. What a brilliant mind!
A few years ago I added a third "motto" to my brain, which is "other people are other people". Delightful to hear Pete say "If I were him, I'd be him", which is just the converse of the same perspective
7:48 - Pete - " When I tell you that YOU're a good boy. then I'M in the mix." I also heard: ' If you can spot it, you got it. ' , which is a phrase, I first heard in 12 step meetings, and is very insightful.
Pete Holmes is so wise.. His approach to the spiritual is so loose and silly. Reminds all of us to be kind to ourselves and stop taking things so seriously
"Can't he love you and want your sandwich?" line from Pete about his dog is how I think a lot people who want a lot of sex are. It isn't that they only want you for sex, and don't have real love. They just also want your sandwich.
I thought they where talking about the struggle of stardom. People around them love them but also want the benefits that comes with dating famous successful people. What do you think?
Wow I can’t believe Neal wouldn’t give credit to his friend Jimmy Carr who enjoyed his Netflix special Blocks and told him he should have his friends on a podcast and ask them about THEIR Blocks
In the '80's I did mushrooms once, ecstasy once -- both had an impact on my creativity and I got some cool writing out of the deal, but, it didn't open my consciousness like ayahuasca. Ayahuasca has had a lasting impact and spaciousness that has lingered.
I'm really glad Pete mentioned that Neil looks emaciated. I was really wondering what was going on with that, but felt it rude to even think about. He also seemed really sad as a result of it. He seems so much happier and energetic in past clips from a few years ago, not mention less emaciated.
To me, Pete bringing up Neal's weight felt like Pete avoiding/deflecting from his own stuff... Also... I didn't hear him say "emaciated"... Hmmmm... Maybe a Block of Yours?
@@vanessawhitneypro I'm really not sure what point you think you're making 🤨, but Neal looks unhealthy skinny, and I'm glad somebody addressed it (regardless of whether or not they were deflecting). Don't really care how you want to phrase it.
Yikes this episode hits on a bunch of my own blocks. Thanks, um, I think. Wow I’m counting the days (29) before the health insurance kicks in at my new job, I’ve gotta get cracking on finding a good CBT and DBT therapist that hopefully that insurance covers.
Interesting; when we come from instability, we yearn for the idea of stable. (ie: eat the same thing, wear the same things, listen to the same thing) Sometimes it’s good to disrupt the comfort of the sameness.🤗💖
True! No cholesterol contained in plant foods, BUT the body makes cholesterol from the foods we eat (like cows making cholesterol from grass), so it could be that peanuts stimulate our natural cholesterol production.
I know it's nitpicking, but the use of the term "reality" at around 17:22 is complicated because there are constructs of reality like "social reality" and "material reality" that have different forms of impact and permeability than the way Pete frames the term. Similarly. at 31:43, the definition of "trauma" just depends on the grounding. The concept of trauma being physical is more of a CBT thing. The broad definition that Neal is referring to is similar to the Lacanian idea of trauma being a moment that can be narratively framed as a psychological split between the conceptual and practical gaps in desire. As much as I love how psychedelics open people up to metaphysical analysis of the self, most of the concepts that people discover are already systematized in really elegant, descriptive ways. Read continental theory, then take drugs, then read more theory. Edit: If you read theory, don't read Sartre or you'll end up like Pete with his "consciousness predates matter" bit at 46:28. Pre-ontological reality is still predicated on being the world. Consciousness entails intentionality, which means that even the statement "consciousness predates matter" is entirely contradictory in its construction.
For someone as enlightened as Pete he sure interrupts a lot. Although it was hilarious when Neal interrupted him right after he says “and the main point is…”
Just was thinking Todd Glass would be a great guest. Pete reminded me of Todd, from their hilarious interactions on Getting Doug with High. Todd's got a block or two haha.
I think Neal loves most of his guests and the act he puts on around others is a projection of his inner turmoil - whether he loves or despises himself. He should love himself because he’s providing this great podcast to world and allowing us all to learn from it and heal ourselves.
As the dude who programs music in the stores, I get what Pete is saying. However commercial spaces with no music makes people feel uncomfortable. Ideally the music should be ambient, if it's too loud that's more a store level decision. Usually H/O picks the music based on a brand identity. But the stores pick the volume. 1:14:28
It's difficult to express myself better on here. I had a dream where there was a movie being shown or made in this closed-minded town. It felt really great at the end when the audience got it but it was also thrillingly scary.
Pete, if you're reading this: you need to watch the Dog Whisperer. It will help you with these dog problems. Long story short: they are likely because of you not taking charge around him so he thinks he needs to go overboard to protect you. Binge the show and take notes, I promise it will help.
You must have stopped learning. Pete is far from insightful in his age, more Cristian offensive with fascist overtones of others suffering for his greatness. Read between the lines.
