I spent an hour in Pete's company at a Who gig at Deeside Leisure Centre in 1981 I think, and was backstage all afternoon as everything was set up. The gig was amazing, and Pete was absolutely brilliant, witty, talkative, and a great listener as I and my friends sat round a table chatting. I will never forget that day, and my dear friends Peter, Sue, and Anna who allowed me to go with them on the day. Easily one of my fondest memories. THANKS PETE 👍😎🛵💨💨💙

Quadrophenia was so ahead of it's time. It's music and message does not age. Many of Pete's signature songwriting style is in Quadrophenia. You hear them in pieces in his 80's solo works. Pete Townshend is one of the greatest rock songwriters that carried the career of The Who. The mass popularity of the Beatles did shadow some of his potential audience. But did the Beatles do two epic albums that are musicals rock opera's. I don't think so! (trigger the haters)

I really wish Pete Townsend was able to fully realize his project Lifehouse - based on what I know of it, that project seems like it was very ahead of its time as well. Quadrophenia might be my favorite album of any musical group: Masterful songwriting, masterful storytelling.

Pete you are a genius, and number one on my list of people I’d like to give a hug to. Quadrophenia still speaks to me after thirty years of listening to it, such a strange and specific story, but totally universal themes that so many of us can relate to.

Not a word escapes Mr. Townsend's mouth that isn't instantly analysed and made right by his mind. He was and is a gift to the world of music. His compositions are part of my life sound track and inspiration. Thank you Sir, Mr. Pete Townsend, of The Who.

Townshend is regularly accused of being over-the-top. But I’m pleased he had the humility to decide The Who to play a supporting role in Quadrophenia concept as the soundtrack. It was Jimmy and this fucking Bellboy in the leads. Those identities colliding resonated deeply in me as a very young man in the 80s. The Who kept the energy and context moving along.

Quadrophenia was and still is the best album of all time for me. It is a record that captures of angst of the teenage years better than any record, and how important music is to teenagers. Particularly boys, who can like Quadrophenia as much at 18 and as they do at 62. Whereas for teen girls, music is much more disposable. I mean, who listens to the New Kids On The Block anymore? Music isn't a fad to male listeners. Please don't take this to mean that females are not capable of developing intense attachments to rock albums and songs as well. But it is far more common with males to develop these attachments. The problem with Quadrophenia is that it was an album before its time. The pre-recorded synth tapes (which didn't work 50% of time) put a noose around the band's neck. Quad was record that was meant to be released in the mid-80's with all the availability of digital sampling and such that would have allowed a touring keyboard player like Rabbit to reproduce all the sounds but allow the band to wander and improvise at times. As Pete says, Tommy was a better vehicle for that because it was a record that was underproduced. The Who had intended to add a lot more overdubs on to Tommy, but they ran out of time and money. So it was easy to take liberties when performing Tommy.

The Who were not appreciated nor as famous as they should have been because they weren't the Beatles, nor Rolling Stones, but in my opinion they are the greatest British live band with the most different bandmates ever.

Pete speaks about ABBA's S.O.S . 13:02 I agree Peter. They wrote some of the best pop songs . Another great pop song for me is _Nights on Broadway_ by the BeeGee's. It's still with me One of yours is from Rough Mix with Ronnie Lane *_Keep Me Turning_*

Such a shame songs from Quadraphenia didn't get a fair airing live. Fair enough, much would be perhaps too complex but, many songs would've been great live.

Hey Matt Smith your statement warrants a big WOW from me ...you sound very narrow minded women are " capable" of much more than men in very important ways.. Look at the Beatles the original boy band.. I love the Who a lot more than you ever could certain of it.. It's 2018 ffs and women have very strong attachments to their bands and music and these days bands

Oh yeah Matt all women Don t listen to disposable music...which our attachments are natural they are men we are women you sound emotionally immature ...you speak of scenarios of yester years not today 53yr old women like myself. I have loved the Who since I was 13 die hard since day ONE

Quadrophenia didnt work live as did Tommy, because Quadrophenia was nowhere near as good as Tommy. I mean.. come on.. Amazing Journey/Sparks??? I've seen and heard many, many live performances of those two songs from the late 60's and they're absolutely amazing. Unmatched by ANYONE. I like the Quadrophenia movie more than the Tommy film, though.. but Live, Tommy is it.

I prefer tommy, and agree quad is a better film. Seen tommy live twice, once was rogers band, the other the who. and it was WAY better than Quad.

@Harry Abma Yes. Quad is not a pop album but a masterpiece of coming of age reality compared to the weird world of Tommy and as an abused child. I never liked Tommy much except for Pinball Wizard and maybe two or three other songs at best. It seemed to trippy and weird. Quad has maybe 2 tunes that are mediocre but are still good quality, but the rest are amazing tunes. I was overwhelmed the first time listening to Quad and had to listen to other who albums to compare, so much music and really long. After coming back to Quad a few years later I became convinced their best album actually was Quadrophenia by a long shot and the live performance with Billy Idol and others was pretty great too. John Entwistle and Keith Moon are amazing on Quad. Roger had never sang better and Pete was at the top of his game. If you want fantasy stick with Tommy. If you want reality, Quad. Here is my take away: 1. The Real Me - teenage wild spirit 2. Cut my hair - questioning the teenage peer pressure. 3. I’m one - no matter what happens, I still will be “the one”. 4. The punk and the godfather - the older geezer preaches to the young about the real world. 5. 5:15 - lose your mind on drugs when your world has changed (job, girl, family, friends rejected), like it or not. 6. Drowned - feeling as low as it goes before you accept the changes. 7. Love reign over me. - Love is the only thing that matters in the end.
