I think the real acting display here isn't Cushing's dialogue with the others in the club but in watching him silently boiling as he has to listen to their gabble about him. Every facial tic, every grimace, the hardening of the eyes as he struggles to keep control. He really puts a lot into that scene without saying a word up until the very end, and then the silken delivery of contempt is icing on the cake.
He enters and ensures the doorknob is latched (cordial, not to draw attention), taps the chair back satisfactorily as he will not move it so the conversation continues uninterrupted. Efficient movement (even during a disagreement) so it does not distract from the dialogue. Marvelous sense of timing. Too often Peter overlooked as one of the most important British actors of the 20th century. In the same league with Olivier, Burton, Guiness, Lee, Karloff, Niven, Attenborough, Mason, Hurt, and Sellers.
I absolutely love this about British and particularly English culture. Its price theres no need to be vulgar and emotional in order to blatantly insult another man. There is no mistaking he is talking shit, and even the other men, while being on the defensive basically said, "you're a dick but if youd like to make a point, we're all listening". God blessed us with him, and we should give thanks for it.

I had always thought peter cushion was a very underated actor, i have been an avid fan for years. One of the nicest people you could meet. RIP......Peter.
Famous, instantly recognizable to generations of filmgoers, successful, always in demand, respected and admired by critics and his peers - that's an example of "underrated"? No offense intended, but I'm getting the idea that anytime someone enjoys something, the first thing they do is label it "underrated" - as if they are only people who know about it. Curious!
I own most of Peter's movies on DVD, and on his birthday, I watch all of his Dracula or Frankenstein films back to back. Sometimes Doctor Who, but there's only two of them. By the way, do you know what the Cushing digit is? Look at my picture. 😉🇬🇧

My absolute favorite scene of any Cushing film I've ever seen. I can't imagine any other actor delivering such withering comments with such total confidence and conviction.

I loved Cushing. What an actor. These movies will live forever and his performances will too. I also notice Lord Lyndon in the background- another fine performance.
He was absolutely brilliant and i feel this scene showcased his talent as much as any other. The coolness of delivery and the unruffled dialogue that hit the nail! I watched this film when it was in the cinema's on general release. It was not the story line that held my attentions - it was him. Peter Cushing at the top of his game!
A truly great actor , I never missed an episode of Sherlock Holmes which he played on TV in the late sixties , he also played doctor who in a film as well .
I'm writing this comment on May 26th, 2023. Peter Cushing's 110th Birthday. It is my sincere hope that my favorite actor of all time will still be remembered in 3023. That is if there's still life on this spinning ball of insanity.
Best time of the year is NOW. Turner Classic Movies busts out the Classic Hammer Movies. Not as many as I would like, but still love it every year. I know, there’s DVD’s not the same. It’s like being a child and waiting for the Rankin-Bass Christmas shows. That was all the fun. Wait all year, then watch them and they’re gone again. Mr. Cushing played the pompous upper class snob so well. He was also a fantastic Sherlock Holmes. Fantastic Actor. Love Him. Glad Star Wars brought him a wide audience and immortality. Not everyone digs the Hammer Movies. I LOVE THEM. Mr. Cushing and Mr. Lee were as great a duo to ever been in films. I would have loved to have seen them in The Odd Couple or The Sunshine Boys. Some type of a film like Going in Style (Original) would have been fun. Something comedic or lighter than what we usually saw them in.
Thank you for your comment although I would have to disagree with the part about Peter Cushing playing a pompous upper class snob, yes he was upper class but he always most times came across as genteel rather than pompous, always thought he embodied the perfect English gent but I guess that's me not being able to attribute anything negative to him as he's one of my favourite people ever!
