As a fan and fellow Aussie, I could watch anything with Peter Finch in it. But this is a great film on its own terms - touching on the issues with romantic relationships when a big age gap exists, and the grubby factionalism of politics. Some things never change. Like so many films of this period set in the UK, it's realistic and utterly believable.

An interesting insight into how Parliament is run and politicians behave. Peter Finch's character - Johnnie Byrne - doesn't inspire empathy, despite his good looks. But that's why most do continue. We get snagged. This character didn't want that. He only cared for himself. He probably would go very far in his "business". So, you have to try. That's what his wife was asking. She was making the stretch and he wasn't taking. He said "Nobody wants me.", but he only "wanted" people as satellites revolving around him. -- Fine acting all around. Finch was tip-top in a tough role, and the actress who played Pauline was absolutely lovely and simple in a complex characterization.

Better than average British movie from the early sixties before they became silly. Well cast with Finch as the ambitious MP, Billie Whitelaw as the good girl and Mary Peach as what was then called the dolly bird. Excellent supporting roles from Pleasance, Holloway and the rest. Alas, they had to work 'Johnnie' into the title - a fad of that era... Johnnie Nobody, Johnnie Guitar, etc... but then I suppose it helped put bums on seats. Good script, tight editing and a nice twist to the ending. Well worth watching.
