Recorded both at his home studio at Ashcombe House, near Bath, and at London’s Townhouse Studios, Peter’s third self-titled album was produced by Steve Lillywhite. The album saw Peter change his writing style; now the rhythm came before the melody and the songs were built up on top of the rhythmic sequences. The album delivered a top 5 UK single in Games Without Frontiers and Peter’s first overtly political song in the shape of totemic closer Biko. It also features notable contributions from Kate Bush, Paul Weller, Phil Collins and David Rhodes.

Oh Biko, Biko, because Biko
Oh Biko, Biko, because Biko
Yihla Moja, Yihla Moja
- The man is dead
The man is dead
When I try to sleep at night
I can only dream in red
The outside world is black and white
With only one colour dead
Oh Biko, Biko, because Biko
Oh Biko, Biko, because Biko
Yihla Moja, Yihla Moja,
- The man is dead
The man is dead
You can blow out a candle
But you can't blow out a fire
Once the flame begins to catch
The wind will blow it higher
Oh Biko, Biko, because Biko
Oh Biko, Biko, because Biko
Yihla Moja, Yihla Moja
- The man is dead
- The man is dead
And the eyes of the world are watching now
Watching now

When David Bowie died, I played all his songs on a loop with a heavy heart, yet remained dry-eyed, and I know I will at least have a catch in my throat should anything fatal happen to Bono or Sting. But if ever Peter Gabriel leaves this life before I do, I will break down, cry ugly tears and sob like a little baby. And I won't know how to stop. No, I won't know how to stop. So Mr. Gabriel, please make sure you live a long, long, long time as there is already too much to be depressed about in the world.

People who have sought peace in violent times, usually get gunned down. MLK was one that you first think of. Biko should be remembered for going against the grain for his country's sake in the throes of corruption. Still, racism is something that you're born into, doesn't belong here, but thrives. R.I.P. This part of history is ignored by many and is rarely ever mentioned in high school textbooks. You can't bring out the black's perspective if one unexperienced; misunderstood is writing.

I remember seeing Biko on tv when he was still alive. What a strong personality full of hope. What a shock him being murdered was. This song was important to get world support to help end Apartheid. Therefore I'm truly shocked to read how some people react. Whatever is wrong now, in SA is not Biko's doing, nor of the integrity Mandela brought to the stage, nor of their ideology. . Whatever corruption hurts SA today, is a new day and new case. It won't be solved by hate against a color or ideology. Power corrupts. All countries need leaders with integrity. And people like Biko and Mandela lived that. And for that they get songs made about them. So you want change? Live a life that gets you songs made about you. And that only happens when you touch most of humanity in a way that shows humanity. (first to check my skin colour to see how they'll respond loses 200 points)

I love Peter Gabriel's music, voice and the thoughts his songs convey. This is one of my favorites, about Steven Biko who was a non-violent activist before Apartheid was finally a thing of the past. Cry Freedom was a brilliant movie about Biko and this song was written for him.

Or the greatest traitor to his people. It's fair to say he was a great artist, and that he had good intentions, but he paved the road to hell for all South-Africans.
@MorusAlba1975
@MorusAlba1975 5 лет назад
@@junglechick13 , Biko was an anti-Apartheid activist, as was Peter Gabriel himself. But Apartheid functioned very well for both the Whites AND the Blacks. As soon as Apartheid was abolished, due to the activism of European journalists and celebrities, Black Communist terrorists like Nelson Mandela rose to power and Whites started getting brutally persecuted. But the Black population started suffering more too, because crime was going up and corruption started pervading the police. Now Black politicians are calling for full-on genocide and land theft, which will inevitably lead to famine AMONG THE BLACKS, just as it did in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). Of course, Peter Gabriel had the best of intentions, but his activism paved the road to hell. A public apology for his past activism, and a call to end the White genocide in South-Africa, would be appreciated. But he remains silent.

Today I am blessed. Bad emotional night, liquor store 10 am Sunday morning, not good. Fell upon this song that is part of my soul on RU-vid once again. Listened, wept, lather rinse, repeat. This song was part of my youth. Chanted as one in unison with 35,000 of my friends, brothers and sisters until tears poured out of our eyes in a shared human experience unheard of today. Drinking, crying I decided to walk 100 yards to the warm waters of south Florida and stand in the ocean listening to this song 4 or 5 times. Multiculturalism all around me. A black man stood out to me. He mid 40s me late 50s. Explained to him I was having a emotional morning and told him what I was listening to and why. I asked him to Google it, listen to it and pass it on. He had it playing while he handed me some spiritual literature to read and learn. Come on people, it's 2021 our world is supposed to be a better place....... in a movement, a cause, you can blow out a candle, easy no problem. But, you can't blow out a fire, a bunch of candles. Cause once the flame begins to catch, the wind, you blowing, will blow it higher. Humanity, peace, freedom are those causes. Trump, white nationalists.....the opposite. Teach, your children well.....alcohol and Sunday mornings, not good. Be safe everyone

+NewSchumalice Good for you. A beautiful, beautiful song about a man that lived a horrible last few hours, beaten, driven around, and killed. Not enough people know the story. I do. I spread it. I am white. Sometimes I am ashamed of how white people act. They have no idea about how much unnecessary blood was shed to get just where people are now. This song makes me cry everytime I hear it, but my favourite version is the one that starts with the National Anthem. Where do you teach? USA? I'm in Canada.

janesgems7 USA was obtained through violence. We were escaping England's tyranny and being tyrannical towards the native Americans at the same time. Picked the wrong example. Governments don't need a conscience for non violence to work because the world is still watching. The most powerful and bravest soldiers are always the non violent. You will never get more commitment than from the non violent soldier who is will to die instead of kill for what is right.
