I would imagine that Phil was really up for that and convinced Banks & Rutherford as their friendship never suffered. Phil played on his 3rd album, drummed on his UK tour and was best man at Peters wedding.

I heard a story that during the beginning of rehearsals Pete asked if anyone had contacted Steve & no one replied. At the same time Steve was in South America touring so he may not have been able to make rehearsals. In his book Steve says his dad had heard the band were reuniting for a one off gig but he doesn’t say how his dad found out. Either way, dick move. No Genesis reunion without Steve in my view.

@@raymondvaughan6262 I hate to have to agree - this is one of few problems with that group: the way some of them have treated their (and one of the globe's finest) lead guitarist.

What a pleasure to see all 5 guys being honest about the wrangling among the group and more so that they are all able to sit together and reminisce. Things may have been tense at times back in the day but it really shines through that they have mutual respect for each other.

I have been a fan since the Lamb when I was very young. The best Genesis albums were the Steve albums. I do like Anthony Phillips aka Trespass. Once Steve left it was blah. Gabriel's solo stuff is pretty good but not even close to Lamb, Selling England by the Pound, etc. It is very unkind how they have treated Steve all these years.

In a sense, Steve has had the last laugh because he can sell out every show and the audience love every second.
@santibanks

Well, Hackett was not really part of this apart from the encore. I think he came down from Latin America. What I suppose is that he wasn't really part of the organization given it was a pretty hasty job and it probably made sense from a logistical perspective to just stick with Stuermer (who probably was the best prepared guy on stage that night-irregardless if you like his playing style or not). At least they had some of the material already in the setlists of the Abacab and Encore tours and were prepared sufficiently on those tracks (Lamb, Carpet Crawlers, Firth of Fifth, Supper's Ready, In the Cage, The Knife was also played as an encore on just a few shows of the Abacab tour, Back in NYC was still being played on the Duke tour).

I was at the concert in 1982 and it just pissed down all day long. Was absolutely soaking wet, but it was fabulous nevertheless, (and I ended up with flu for about the next month! - probably unrelated) lovely to see all of them together and getting on and it would’ve been great if they could’ve perhaps done one more joint album, perhaps impossible but at least they’re not as hostile as Roger and David from another band I happened to have been a fan of for the last 50 years.

Great stuff. Glad that the liquidators didn’t get the 10 percent. I believe Steve had a gig earlier and flow in to do the on core. Mike was the one who push it not to filmed but there are plenty of audio recordings the one surprise of that show for me was no custom for Peter to portray the songs.

I heard a few times from several sources over the years that musically it wasn't up to snuff, but I heard the bootleg on here a few days ago, recording quality isn't great but they all played excellently. I didn't recall one "ooooh, that was rough" moment. Even Peter's drumming on Turn It On Again, wasn't really noticeable as Chester was with him keeping fort.

I still have the programme and ticket stub for this. Like it was only yesterday. In a funny way Phil's remarks about no mobile phones back then is somewhat a blessing. People who spend entire shows with arms held up filming is pretty sad and also fu@king annoying!! In hindsight they should have filmed it properly with the proceeds also going to the WOMAD cause. For me this concert still remains top of the pile of genesis shows I've seen. Even if the weather and sound quality was awful. Well what do you expect in October. Thanks for posting. 😊

The amazement about the turnout and stoicism of the audience in that one-time reunion says a lot about the fact that these great musicians still don't quite understand the greatness of what they've composed. I don't think there's a venue that could serve the attendance, if such a reunion was possible, today. But it's OK. Many others have failed to understand their own relevance in their living years.

Genesis did not document their magnificent career adequately (or at least the parts with Gabriel in it). No one bothered to engage a cameraman to capture this event for the ages. Just as no one filmed a "Lamb" concert in reasonable quality. It is infuriating.

I have a problem with my favourite group: listening to interviews, I can decipher 95% of what Peter or Steve say, but only just above a half of what fast-speaking Tony or Phil say and maybe a third of what words-swallowing Mike says. Am I alone in that difficulty? By the way, Mike's rainproof jacket doesn't really ooze rock vibe, does it? ;-) I'm not sure Lemmy would wear one on stage.
