Even though he’s in the Rock n Roll hall of fame, I feel like he is underated.Even though SO was such an huge success artistically and moving him slightly more mainstream. I feel like his material especially his post Genesis solo albums didn’t get enough credit. Some of his music requires more than one listen to begin to appreciate the genius of Peter. I think a lot people don’t give him a second listen.
77, 80 and 82 plus plays live are the REAL PG for me.. So is excellent and kind of the END of the really experimental PG? Ething got personal on US , up and I/O and its really not the same as --- MORIBUND, INTRUDER, KONTAKT, WALK THRO THE FIRE, etc, etc
Saw this in Toronto when he shaved his head and sharpied eyebrows.. 2 years later I was living in Port Elizabeth South Africa. I got real strange across the border
A nice, mellow rendition of 'Start' here! Did Jerry play saxophone on the album version? When you compare this to a Genesis concert from six years prior, Peter is much more 'himself' on stage, rather than in constant character.
The Wikipedia page for the Peter Gabriel III / Melt album notes Dick Morrissey as playing saxophone on "Start," "Family Snapshot," and "Lead a Normal Life".
I saw Peter at a July 1980 'Melt' tour concert in the dilapidated ballroom of the skanky Diplomat Hotel in Manhattan's Times Square. Very weird show. It was a very small venue and crowd with not much of a stage. At one point Peter lit a match, held it up and called it his light show. Jerry Marotta's marimba actually fell apart and collapsed during 'Lead A Normal Life'. I and a friend were able to climb some stairs and sneak into the backstage after show party. I talked about bass playing with my hero Tony Levin and chatted with Peter and the other band members. As they were leaving I got all of their autographs on my copy of the PG Scratch album. Peter and his then wife Jill got into the back of a very small car and were driven away. No limos or typical rock star glamour.
That's such an interesting story! I was too young to know that much about the music then. I just knew I loved early Genesis and PG's solo stuff. My mum's friend drove us up from West Wales, which is a long way from Cardiff. Big treat for two teenage girls from the sticks!
I was at this gig ..Tony Levin-bs /Larry Fast-kybs/John Ellis-gtr/Jerry Marrotta drums, sax? The support band was RANDOM HOLD liked them too. Incidently my mate got pulled up onstage by PG to sing the chorus on 'Games without frontiers' (more info than you wanted, really)!
@@titchbek was David Rhodes not in Random Hold and he got the job permanently after this tour? Also -- John Ellis joined the Stranglers for a bit - I think? Again, too much info !!
