The official Sledgehammer video. Directed by Stephen R. Johnson, produced by Adam Whittaker. Claymation, pixilation, and stop motion animation provided by Aardman Animations and the Brothers Quay.
Sledgehammer was the first single from the multi-platinum selling album So, the first of Peter’s studio albums to have a proper title and a watershed release in his career. Its marriage of the artistic and the commercial made for an indisputable success, with the album quickly sitting atop the album charts on both sides of the Atlantic.
You could have a steam train
If you'd just lay down your tracks
You could have an aeroplane flying
If you bring your blue sky back
All you do is call me
I'll be anything you need
You could have a big dipper
Going up and down, all around the bends
You could have a bumper car, bumping
This amusement never ends
I want to be - your sledgehammer
Why don't you call my name
Oh let me be your sledgehammer
This will be my testimony
Show me round your fruitcage
'Cos I will be your honey bee
Open up your fruitcage
Where the fruit is as sweet as can be
I want to be - your sledgehammer
Why don't you call my name
You'd better call the sledgehammer
Put your mind at rest
I'm going to be - the sledgehammer
This can be my testimony
I'm your sledgehammer
Let there be no doubt about it
Sledge Sledge Sledgehammer
I've kicked the habit, shed my skin
This is the new stuff, I go dancing in, we go dancing in
Oh won't you show for me and I will show for you
Show for me, I will show for you
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, I do mean you, only you
You've been coming through
Going to build that power
Build, build up that power, hey
I've been feeding the rhythm
I've been feeding the rhythm
Going to feel that power build in you
Come on, come on, help me do
Come on, come on, help me do
Yeh, yeh, yeh, yeh, yeh, yeh , yeh, yeh, you
I've been feeding the rhythm
I've been feeding the rhythm
It's what we're doing, doing
All day and night

Yes children, once upon a time MTV was known for showing music videos from brilliant, cutting edge artists. You actually waited to hear a song on the radio or watch the video in rotation on MTV, then bought the album when it was released if you liked the song. Those were the days. I'm going to cry myself to sleep now because I'm old enough to remember the summer this video came out....

I was 24 when it came out. People need to remember how revolutionary things could appear back in those days when sound and vision were restricted to broadcast schedules and video cassettes. This track was completely novel and without precedent and it was almost like being at a really exciting performance to see it being played on screen. I saw it playing on some screens in a bar (this was the ultimate in coolness at that time) one Friday evening in Brighton - I remember it well because I was also in a wonderfully "close" conversation with a young woman I'd met that night. For me it was everything I could want. I was a really huge Genesis/Gabriel fanatic and I was incredibly proud that "the rest of the world", as I saw it, could really get into Gabriel too. He was the only musician/rock star who I can say I genuinely worshipped or even 'loved' and he made me really appreciate how people could also feel the same about their favourite rock stars.

The fact that I can watch this video again and again and again and it's always got pristine audio and video is one of the major reasons why I love RU-vid. I used to have to either wish "Classic MTV" or VH1's "The Big '80s" aired the video or replay my VHS recording of it and hope I didn't degrade the picture quality **too** much. But man, this song and video are addictive and this song is definitely in my Top 50 Favorite Songs of All Time (an impressive list considering I love tens of thousands of songs).

This was back when MTV helped artists sell their music by playing their creative videos 24 hours a day- I gotta say I was hooked on it. The other video that got a lot of attention when it came out was, "Take On Me"- that was also ahead of its time- back then they tried to really create a whole story w the music included- always trying to outdo eachother. The music video for Peter Gabriel's instant-classic "Sledgehammer," from the great animators behind Wallace and Gromit, is simply one of the great music videos of all time. The video is also an instant-classic. It's hard to believe that "Sledgehammer," and the album it was on, Gabriel's also instant-classic "So," is thirty years old, but it is--the album, song and video were all released in 1986. Now is a great time to re-visit and enjoy this great song and video.

There are no words to adequately describe how the dancing poultry and the man with lights haunted me throughout my life. Finally re-discovering the video, I'm no less freaked out.

I smashed a multi user touchscreen acer over the lousy reality 2015 made due with over hanging anxiety issues it gave me....this song makes me realise how powerful real music can straighten the inner psyche out. (if you're not a high functioning ASD/aspie/add being you won't get this)

Without a doubt, Peter Gabriel is a creative genius! Musically, production-wise, video creativity across so many levels. His music was so far ahead of its time, especially when combined with MTV's music video. An awesome talent in so many ways. Thank you Pete, from so many fans who love your music!

this song gives me feels. I have no idea why. I think it's simply the chord progression that goes into the minors, a la african church chords.

+Dio Santana Sledgehammer is a celebration of African boasting songs as interpreted through 1960s soul music. Gabriel is simply showing his 'abilities' to a potential lover through metaphor. The bridge/mode change, wailing and improvisation+falsetto is not an imitation of soul music - it is the embodiment of it. The theme of renewal is an echo of the Christian narrative - "I kicked the habit, shed my skin"... Compare that to amazing grace. Also it is about how much Peter Gabriel wants to fuck.

you know what's funny, i put that section in a tweet before reading your comment and was like, wait, is this a religious song? it literally reads like Psalms, and a lot of negro spirituals. He's also said he has deep respect and honor for soul, r&b, of course he was on the r&b charts so I hope so.

He's a musical genius that pulled a lot from African influences openly. Just checkout his other videos such as from his album Security. There's nothing wrong with acknowledging that.
