I'm 46 and nostalgic of a time that was already over when I was born. So don't worry guys, all younger folks don't listen to modern and computerized music. Paul Simon, Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Gordon Lightfoot, here we go...
I’m 86 and I remember when I took my love to a plane leaving me for a summer. I listened to this song on my way home during a major rainstorm and felt so sad. I love it and her still after nearly 60 years of marriage and I still love the song and PPM!
I am a 71yrs old Japanese man. when I listened this song, brings me the day when I was a junior-hischool student and played this song with my best friends.
I have never heard a song delivered with so much tenderness and loving care. Every single note and word is treated as if it were a precious fragile treasure.
And Ian Tyson of Ian and Sylvia, who wrote the Canadian classic, "Four Strong Winds", and with Sylvia was the first to record "Early Morning Rain" thus kick-starting Gordon's career, passed away just four months before Gordon.
I once heard this song during an early morning rain, getting ready for grade school in the late 60's. For reasons unknown, my sister was playing it on her little blue-and-white RCA phonograph while we were in that final rush to head on down the steps and out the door. To this day, every time I hear this song I think of that early morning rain, and every time there's an early morning rain, this song plays on an old phonograph in my memory.
Funny how it can take you imeadeatly straight back through the smoke ringed canyons of your mind, to a very particular moment in time . Me...aged about 9...getting ready on a very miserable dull grey, and wet day for school mid 60s..
One of my favorites - their version of this was better than anyone else's. Those harmonies are just haunting. I didn't realize until recently that this was written by Gordon Lightfoot.
Have you heard Elvis his version, you should hear it, really beautiful and more touching. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6xBnivXp0fA.html
@@INUAGAIN when and where did I say I had talent. I voiced an opinion…plain and simple. Apparently you seem to be the expert here not that anybody cares. You should expound on your wealth of knowledge so the rest of us will be better informed. Anxiously awaiting your reply
This song feels lonely, homesick, and sad. There are few songs that evoke that kind of genuine emotion. PP&M did right by this Gordon Lightfoot masterpiece.
HEARING THEM SING TOOK ME BACK IN TIME I AM 74 YEARS OLD B UT FOR THE TIME THAT SONG WAS ON I WAS 23 YEARS OLD AND WITH MY FIANCE AND VERY MUCH IN LOVE A GOOD TIME. AND YEP I MARRIED HIM THE FOLLOWING YEAR IN 1966.
1966 I was a young dad then. I had a beautiful wife and a great little son. They are both gone now cancer has stolen them both for me . I miss the music from back then but nowhere near how much I miss my family . All alone now.
I'm so sorry. I am also- this song takes me back to when my husband and so many of our friends were being sent overseas- sometimes back then some sang the lyrics a little differently. I miss him so much. He died on the 4th of July.
Actually, they were brought together by manager Al Grossman in 1961 after auditioning lots of vocalists. He wanted to take advantage of the burgeoning folk revival in NY. Boy, did he pick the right three singers!
When I left For Cu Chi Vietnam in 1969-70 I heard Peter, Paul and Mary singing this on the radio. On the way back home I heard Elvis singing it. thanks for uploading this
A lot of people, young and old, find this group appealing. Most don't know why. The answer is simple. They did it right; consistently, professionally, honestly, and true to their art, RIGHT!
Yes they do, good singers still exist, they just go unnoticed because the studios need someone to make the newest “mumble rap” record that will sell ten million for some reason.
PP&M are indeed excellent! Since you like their style and harmonies, you need to check out The Petersen family on RU-vid. 3 sisters, their brother and mother, along with a friend of the siblings. They are a delightful family and very easy to like.
It’s 2024 and I’m turning 68 this year. I remember listening to their music from a young age. I went into the Army in 1974 when I was 17. Even though it was the best place for me to be I was still homesick. When I was down I would sing 500 miles under my breath or in my thoughts. It’s one of those little things that carried me through that time.
The talent from our generation cannot be matched. Beautiful music, beautiful time to grow up. Sure there were problems, but people were kinder, had respect, and it was a more innocent time. When I look into the eyes of some of our young people today, I see such emptiness. I'm afraid for the future of our world.
This song....oh how I miss the songs of my youth. How they blended so well. As of my response in July 2023, Peter and Paul are still alive, Mary Travers having died from the complications of the chemotherapy used to treat her leukemia.
PP&M are of the most well known cover bands ever; Pete Seeger (If I had a Hammer/Blowing in the Wind), Bob Dylan, Gordon Lightfoot etc. At least Puff the Magic Dragon was somewhat original (though from a poem).
What a rendition of a perfectly written song by one of the greatest song writers we will ever know. Thank you Gordon Lightfoot for your wonderful artistry and contribution of music to humanity to hear and cherish always.
Gordon Lightfoot touches that sad place of longing in the heart across the chasm of choices made. Such effective poetry. This version takes the energy down where Paul's deep voice has us linger, stuck there on the ground in the early morning rain. This morning, with my loved one far away and an aching in my heart, I am moved.
@@otto8049 thank you. Lightfoot is a thoughtful writer. On the day that I wrote the comment, I was touched by the effective delivery of Mr. Lightfoot's writing by Peter, Paul and Mary. I was experiencing a very difficult passage in my life.
It’s time for a revival of folk music. It takes you to a calmer, deeper, more reflective place. I bet a lot of people would enjoy a break from the crazy, frenetic times we’ve been in for so long.
There is a folk community alive in the country. There are music festivals in the summer. Check out the Newport Folk Festival. One of my favorites who we lost recently is Bill Staines.
This still strikes a chord with me… 1966 was a pivotal and life changing year for me.. it was a time when I found myself rejected and abandoned by a love that I thought was true. And I was literally there, not actually on a runway, but an airline strike kept me from flying away, and I needed to find my way that foggy morning on a train instead.
It's not only the beauty of the music, the beauty of young people in their prime or the spirituality in these "hymns", it's the beauty of three persons, like the Trinity, acting and singing as one, unified entity, in perfect harmony. It's truly inspiring and so full of joyful richness. God bless these three, beautiful people for maximizing their God-given talents for the creation of so much beauty and enjoyment.
The term "breathtaking" is wonderfully descriptive of the delicate combination of the genius of G Lightfoot & these marvelous artists [ both their precise singing harmony, that marvelous guitar picking and the fellow who played their cello, out of camera frame-- I've forgotten his name, just now] . Thank you for so precisely describing the effect of this magical performance
Peter, Paul, and Mary had such a great sound. Now, Mary is singing with the angels in heaven. This is a beautiful piece of music. It makes me feel mournful, like I've just lost my best friend to cancer. Another song where Mary's beautiful vocal talents are heard is "500 Miles." The 3 of them also do a fun version of Puff The Magic Dragon. Lemon Tree is also a wonderful song of theirs.
I have grown up listening and loving this song without knowing that this is actually Gordon Lightfoot's original song❤ and just realized that he has great songs that were sung by American singers, RIP and thank you Sir for your music❤
I can not believe its been 51 years since this song came out. I was a 12 year old boy back in 1966 and love the folk music of the 60's. Peter, Paul and Mary, Pete Seeger, Joan Baez and Bob Dylan made folk music cool to listen to. They were great social conscious songs that relate to time immemorial. And now that I am 64 years old...This song still captures my heart. I consider the 60's as the greatest decade in Folk and Rock & Roll music. Priceless!
I have seen Gordon about 7 times live in Toronto and was always impressed with his composition and music. He is a true story teller. I do have to agree with many of you here that this is an exceptional version of this great song.
@@johnmaki3046 John The harmony that PP&M give to this version is amazing but yesI do agree that Gord's version is so full of pain and angst. I love Did She Mention My Name. "Are the young girls still as pretty in the city in the fall? Does the laughter on their faces still put the sun to shame?" Who writes lyrics like that?

Pure class and quality. Loved them since the get go in 1962. Have all of their albums. This is live without help from a studio unlike so many today need.
Saw them in Newport in 63, with a ton of my friends Half are now gone, but I suspect they are listening to this in heaven now. I hope Mary is with them all. Yah the tears always flow when I hear this, but not sad ones Remembrance, along with amazement at the beauty and harmony When Mary joins in at 0.39 I lose it, well maybe a few sad ones, I lost another one a few weeks ago. But I shall be listening to this for countless years, many many many many ..............

PP&M's best song!! Dreamed that one day I would fly a Boeing 707, the airplane mentioned in this song, and my very favorite airliner. I use to marvel that it's tail was 50 feet tall (5 stories), and in 1968 when I was an 18 year old college student, I used to look at my 5 story tall dormitory and be blown away that an airplane's tail could be that tall. But I got to the airlines in 1986, too late to fly the B-707 as most had been parked by then. And by the year 2000, I was a Boeing 767 captain for United airlines and the tail of my airplane was 60 feet tall and my plane weighed 150,000lbs more than a 707. Still, I love the 707 more than the 757/767s that I flew for United, and it is still bigger than life to me and this song just makes it more so. In the late 2000s, I would occasionally see John Travolta's Boeing 707 at LAX or JFK and seeing that airplane still flying always brought a smile to my face.
Wolfsky9 My comment was NOT meant to imply that they were not astute at their craft....nor to undermine their efforts. I assure you that you seem to have taken offense where it was neither stated nor intended. BTW: I am NOT a "Sir". ~ RED ☮♥♫
Love PP&M and this song in particular. We all have our respective associations with it. For me, it brings back memories of leaving on a jet plane for Biên Hóa, Vietnam and wondering whether I would make it back home.
Like so many of the other commenters, I am in my 70's. I have very fond memories of P, P, and M. The lyrics, "You can't jump an airplane like you can a freight train," have stuck with me for decades, and influenced some important personal decisions I made. Great memories. Thank you.
Their guitar work is orchestral and their harmonies heavenly . Such great times in the USA then except for the Viet Nam war . It was a better country .

When I listen to this treasure, sung by these fabulous artists, that gentle rain covers my cheeks and softens my heart. What magic, what tender sensibility.

Greatest trio of all time. None harmonized better and none stood for social change more courageously. I thank the universe for giving to us lowly primates artists with such transcendent talent.
