As a US Navy veteran, I can tell you with confidence (due to my experience on a ship as a lookout) that the average distance a person can see IS approximately 7 miles. ..and I'm being totally serious! However, interestingly in some places on the earth (usually when out at sea) you can see up to 35 miles due to the curvature of the earth. (And if you are wondering where this phenomenon is capable, mainly vast calm seas like The Gulf of Oman, The Arabian Gulf, Indian Ocean and South China Sea.) When a person can see this far there is another very rare phenomenon that can be witnessed when the sun dips below the horizon known as 'the green flash' it's even crazier to see than the aurora borealis.

For an observer standing on the ground with h = 1.70 metres (5 ft 7 in) (average eye-level height), the horizon is at a distance of 4.7 kilometres (2.9 mi).For an observer standing on the ground with h = 2 metres (6 ft 7 in), the horizon is at a distance of 5 kilometres (3.1 mi).For an observer standing on a hill or tower of 100 metres (330 ft) in height, the horizon is at a distance of 36 kilometres (22 mi). I think the way memory works is your brain sends signals along a path of synapses to retrieve the information. When it's something you use constantly like your name, the path is well traveled and basically instant, to where you don't even really "remember" your name at all, you just know it. When you have a older less important memory, sometimes youre brain gets lost trying to find the right synapses to fire.

Peter u forget things to remember new things
@peter_draws
@peter_draws 7 лет назад
If I remember an old thing do I automatically forget one of the new things, or just another old thing? Is there some pecking order? Am I always at some max amount of remembered things?
@Phil-s5p
@Phil-s5p 7 лет назад
Peter Draws I think as you get older and start to remember thing when you were little your brain exchanges a recent memory or an even further memory to remember it but you can for get it in like the next hour. The same thing is for dreams you have 7-10 dreams per night but when you wake up you can only remember the last 1 or 2
@joehuffman7410
@joehuffman7410 7 лет назад
Peter, Studies have been done that show there is a limit to the amount of things a person can recall based on a few variables (Time, capacity, and importance). When you remember something frequently or it was a single important event, the synapses between those points in your brain become more "exercised" and it is easier to recall those things. But over time if those synapses don't continually get exercised they grow weaker and the connection is harder to make or altogether forgotten (and subsequently replaced). There are also only so many points that you can store memories or knowledge in your brain and you actually do lose the ability to recall certain things if you learn a lot or make a lot of memories, because like a hard drive, your brain has to erase some things to make room for more. So things can be completely forgotten and other memories take the place of those.
@joehuffman7410
@joehuffman7410 7 лет назад
Also like you were saying sometimes a memory can be sparked and then all of the sudden you can remember it. That's because there is either a part of that memory or something very similar to it that caused that synapse to fire. (a Smell, phrase, way someone said something, or a visual trigger.) I love the things you wonder about and even though you do say somethings are better left just for thinking, i thought this would be a good one to tell you about.

In case of the word geometry: /dʒiˈɑː.mə.tri/ (US pronunciation) the grapheme "o" is the stressed vowel of the word. Since the word is longer than 3 syllables the pronunciation is lax (not ou, but ɑ) In case of the word geometric: /ˌdʒiː.əˈmet.rɪk/ (US pronunciation) the grapheme "o" is no longer stressed and the stress shift to the beginning of "-metric". Laxing by ending takes precedence (-ik ending makes stressed vowel pronunciation lax) so we say "e" sound in "-metric". Since the "o" is no longer stressed we pronounce it as a schwa sound written as "ə" phonetically. I hope this clears up your concerns about the matter. With much love, G

SquareRoot(height above surface / 0.5736) = distance to horizon where "height above surface" is in feet and "distance to horizon" is in miles. If you are 6 feet tall and standing right at the water's edge, then your eyes are about 5.5 feet above the surface. The distance to the horizon is: SquareRoot(5.5 / 0.5736) = 3 miles
