This story is based of the time Wilbert Awdry worked as a guard on the Talyllyn Railway and left the refreshment lady behind on that platform sometime between 1951 or 1952
I’m pretty sure it was between 1952 and this book’s publication in 1955, as Awdry and his family visited the railway on holiday in 52, and Awdry decided to become a volunteer afterwards.
What I always thought funny about this story is while the refreshment lady is explaining to Peter Sam that Henry is a guaranteed connection she also missed Henry's train.
She can’t live too far: if I’m the refreshment lady, I won’t live at Tidmouth, ride 2 hours of Main Line trains, then ride SR trains for another hour to get to work everyday. My guess is she lives at Crovan’s Gate.
Peter Sam certainly looks like a ladies' man, and just as much acts like a free-spirited engine. I guess the thing is that he cares about his job a little too much to do it right at times. Don't worry, Peter Sam. I'm like that sometimes myself to be honest with you. BTW, I notice Sir Handel has that large rear round window in the previous story that Peter Sam has in the TV series. Interesting.
yep and the early skarloey railway based books and the one mid sodor book depicted peter sam & sir handel in the builds that sir haydn & edward thomas originally had :).
No as where he came from was a railway with an engine called Duke sir Handel was o their with him the thin controller bought them and painted them red the Peter Sam you know what's the one that used to work on the railway with Duke and sir Handel

You ended up MAKING him nearly late anyway, as he had accidentally left the Refreshment Lady behind! And he had to stop for her to catch up and get on board!
