Why not present candidates with detailed, live case(s) to work on? By live case, I mean you challenge candidates to outline solutions to one of your most pressing current problems (not some synthetic situation). Give them some openly available data, perhaps salted with some less sensitive internal tidbits if possible; then ask for a 5 slide presentation at the end of the day. Charlatans will crumble; promising contenders will be more clear plus you'll get some fresh insights on your problem.
