In this interview with @peterwindsor we talks about why Mercedes have a big problem on their hands in Lewis Hamilton and George Russell and why it might already be too late to solve it, Japanese GP and how Red Bull managed to bounce back from the Singapore GP, the problem with the F1 media, Sainz jr vs Alonso, who is the number 1 at Ferrari and why F1 could do with more tracks like Suzuka and what Red Bull and Max Verstappen do so well at Suzuka.

I agree with almost everything but the Piastri-Norris comparison. I think we've had many outstanding rookies since Max and Lewis, who have had great rookie seasons , but haven't yet delivered on that World Championship promise. I mean we need to see more of Piastri, especially his race pace and management, before we make claims about Championships. Having a superior driving style is a big plus but not everything.

I think Toto believed that Merc was going to continue to be the frontrunner under the new regs, believed that Lewis would quickly bag his 8th WDC and retire, and they would have George ready to race for Championships. But they built a mule instead of a thoroughbred, so the whole "3 year plan" went from sugar to shit.

@@alimantado373 George has to understand that Lewis taking it easy on his tires early in the cycle doesn't mean that George has more pace. George is always attacking when Lewis is trying to bring his tires in slowly to capitalize later in the stint. If they race each other early in a stint, they lose out to EVERYONE ELSE. It's just basic racing IQ, but George can't see beyond the end of his nose sometimes.

George was meant to be the wingman who was willing to race Max wheel to wheel all the way off the track, instead of Valterri letting Max by, while Lewis continued to rack up titles. It wasn’t even conceivable that Mercedes would design a dog midfield car and still not completely understand the regs after a year and a half.

I think Russel problem is Race Pace. He can't have a high race pace as Hamilton at this moment at time. If you look back at the Canadian GP, he could not keep up with Verstappen, Alonso and Hamilton at that race. In 10 Laps into the race he asked his team for a diffrent strategy because he couldn't keep up and later he crashed into the wall because he couldn't accept that he was slower that race than the 3 drivers infront of him. Just like in Japan, he couldn't accept it that Hamilton was faster than him.

The problem that I found with these "young drivers" is that they have never challenged in a WDC. Max said from 2021 that he could not go another year how he did in 2021. I cannot imagine Norris and George doing what Max and Lewis did in 2021 or Lewis in 2016, 2008 and 2007. CL made way too many mistakes last year (so did Ferrari in general) but CL didn't help either. These drivers won't know how to deal with the situations until they are in them.

I think max now knows that he can do 21 again after 3 titles. He was desperate to win 21 since it was the last year of regs and he didnt know if he was gonna get a car capable in the future. I think now, even if merc brings a miracle and develops a good car, max will still run with it.

If you don’t believe me, here is the quote from George after the race in Japan where it’s quite obvious he was read the riot act by his management and told to get in line after trying to race Hamilton early on in the race who unlike George was trying to bring his tyres in slowly to make them last - source was Autosport but it’s all over the internet if you look. *”For me, the goal is to secure P2 in the constructors’ [championship]. On my personal side, the drivers’ championship is totally out of the window. It’s been a complete disaster of a season, so many missed chances. Lewis [Hamilton] is in a really good position for P3. Interesting observation ive had about Oscar. Ive been a competive RC racer for 25 years on and off. Oscar was a young RC prodigy who won National titles in Austrialia as a 9/10 year old before ditching the transmitter for a go kart. The best of the best in RC are absolute masters of the short corner style of racing that Peter loves to go on about. It's something ive always struggled with cause I taught myself how to race doing RC cars and early sims like Grand Prix Legends then Iracing. I always tried to emulate the perfect old school driving school techniques like brake in straight line and use as much track as possibe to carry speed out of the corner. So in RC i can driver really nice looking lines with perfect braking points and keep it right on the tube in the corner but still be 0.5/lap slower than the best of the best who are just able to cut a few feet off the lap compared to my wider entries and exits. In RC it's all about using your steeing as little as possible cause the car have no grip when you have any wheel in the car so the way to go fast is make the track as short as possible getting it rotated super quick and being full throttle as much as possible and be super accurate with your apexes. So I think Oscar develop the short corner style at a super young age and carried that onto into karting and real cars! And his calm demeaner is also a huge advantage for RC racing where the lap times are 15-20 secs and your constantly under pressure and never have more than 2 sec or so straights to relax or blink and your nerves are going insane.

The only thing I want to say with regard to the Sainz/Leclerc issue is that well, you don't just need speed to win a Formula 1 Championship. You also need personality, vision, strategic and tactical insight and a dog mentality. You can't just sit there and leave it all to the pit wall all the time, especially not if it's the Ferrari pit wall ffs. I love Leclerc, he is the nicest boy on the grid and drives like the devil is chasing him on his day, but he needs to develop. Right now I see Sainz winning a championship more than I see Leclerc winning one and that shouldn't be the case.
@windwaveswindwaves5329
@windwaveswindwaves5329 8 месяцев назад
lol - Sainz is nowhere near Leclerc class. What you are not understanding is that Sainz is fighting Leclerc because it is existential for him. Leclerc on the other hand could not care less, his superiority has been established. He knows Ferrari is not competitive so for him it's pretty much irrelevant. Leclerc races to win, not to be Sainz lol. That is why he has been taking extra risks. He can be strategic when it counts which we will see if and when he gets a truly competitive car.

Nice analysis on the Mercedes drivers. For Norris vs Piastri, Suzuka proved how good Norris has developed and the work that Piastri still needs to put in. I mean, Piastri had a VSC pitstop advantage and Norris was effectively blocked by Perez during the VSC. That gained Piastri maybe 15 seconds, still he finished 15 seconds behind Norris. I see the potential in Piastri, but I also see that in. Norris. And for now, Norris is well clear of Piastri.

Yes, to some point teams are even guilty of this but they are far from the main problem. It's fan accounts and fan accounts trying to represent the actual teams that is spoiling the sport. Most fans simply want fair and balanced reporting on the sport and technical knowledge passed on to them. Kudos to James Vowles at Williams for doing it right. Always a pleasure watching you interview PW Cam, just a ton of insight. My point of departure with PW is his constant dwelling on AD21. Mercedes brought lawyers to the race, they were planning on fighting before anything even happened. In the end, they didn't quit fighting for the good of the sport, or because "Mercedes is Blue Chip", they stopped because the lawyers told them that best case scenario was going to be the race would be voided and Verstappen would win on count-back anyway. It's a bit of a "hitch in his giddy-up" in horse parlance, he brings it up nearly every video and it taints otherwise brilliant analysis. You wear your beliefs on your sleave which is more honest IMHO and it makes your videos like "Why Max will never be the GOAT" so good. You don't use "color of authority" when you say ?Because this happened...that can never be.", it's much more honest, because you are up front with saying it comes from the POV of an intelligent fan. You're both brilliant and we all look forward to your next retrospective video Cameron. Love your narratives. IMO, the dynamic between Lewis and George is toxic, George bring out the absolute worst in Lewis and he's not even trying, he's just being the same guy he always was, like Peter said. I might amend this novella.

You can't just drive off, Carlos didn't have the tyres or the speed to do that, and the only reason Hamilton didn't win that race is because George is an idiot and Carlos pulled a very smart move. I think the issue is Russell looked to Mercedes like a fast driver who could grow into a team leader. Unfortunately as in many companies, some young talented people just don’t have what it takes to make that next step. As fast as George is, after several years in F1 he’s still obsessed with beating his team mate at the expense of maximising points for his team. Unless he matures quickly, not only will he lose the support of his team principal to secure that lead driver role when Hamilton retires but I can’t see any other front running team taking him on. As the USAF/NASA saying goes, quite simply he isn’t “the right stuff”.

at the 23ish mark you guys talked about the media, and PW mentioned he tries to be objective. my take is, that's great, but i would still love it if any/all media types for F1 specifically laid out their own biases. Rather than the vague read between the line stuff we have now. As an example, Matt & Tommy, they both say straight up "im a leclerc fan boy, im a RB fan boy" and honestly, that recontextualizes everything and makes their take mean more when they speak against "their team/driver" and biases are almost impossible to get rid of, that's human nature and if you ever say "im not biased" then you may want to reevaluate everything because you're just blind to em. If skyy straight up came out and said, "look some teams and drivers have a direct interest for our publication, british drivers will always be our focus for our brand and customers." Hell, that's fantastic, i can contextualize everything they say rather than sitting around wondering if their backhanded compliments are just that or a misunderstanding. idk, it would create some tribalism issues sure but we already have that. it would just remove the "vague fog" they use as a liability escapegoat.
