On this episode I wanted to close out the rear differential project so I started out installing the new spicer u-joints and front driveshaft. However, when I started on the back I realized it was the time to replace the rear/rear u-joint that I had left in place when I pulled the 3rd member. So I ran over to Traction to buy another ujoint and borrow the Tiger tool. It proved to be the most stubborn ujoint of the bunch, likely due to many winters of road salt and then sitting in the rain for 10 years in that field. Eventually after trying many different setups I was able to finally hammer out those caps and replace it with new. Now the drive train is ready for the road.
Hope you enjoy the video and thanks for all the comments, suggestions and support!

I am sure this guy knows his shit, I have only been driving 5 years now, and I didn't know that mechanics could install a drive line out of time, until i had a u joint replaced and the truck felt like it was a bucking bronco. I called a guy that drove for us and told him what was going on, and that was the first time i even knew that was a thing. Glen was a good ol boy beat cancer twice and passed away from a damn blood clot! That's the way it goes, but I always took his word as gold when I had issues! Old truckers know there shit, and I will never be too proud to ask advice from them old drivers!

I wish light duty u-joints like the ones on my pickup assembled like these. Being able to just screw the caps on from the outside of the yoke is extremely practical. That back one really looked like a pain in the butt. I didn't think anything would eclipse that torque multiplier fiasco from last weekend. Glad you're able to get some work done on the old girl.

Good call, while you’re that deep into the drivelines you might as well replace the last few U-joints. You’ll never have to fuss with them again now. One less thing to fail when you’re out with the family. Can’t wait to see you let the clutch out the first time and see it move under it own steam. Everyone is pulling for you. Take your time and do it right.

If you haven't, make sure you pump the u joints full of grease after you assemble them. There's enough in them to put them together. You just don't want to run them with that little bit of assembly grease in them. The videos are great, keep em coming.

@roundsm18
@roundsm18 4 года назад
Yes they are. I was hoping one day someone would have the easy answer for me. I guess the answer is probably quit being a commercial mechanic. First one I ever did out in the field I was elated... then I realized I put the driveline in out of phase. Seven years later and I will still never forget it. My current answer is two pieces of all thread that I use as alignment studs. It still only helps a little bit.

Too late now, but its a good idea to coat the insides of the yoke/drive shaft ears with anti seize. Keeps em from rust welding in there, and makes it a hell of allot easier to get those caps out if the need arises.

Watching and enjoying every one of your videos. I totally get wanting to restore something as cool as that Pete. I'm an old motorhead/gearhead/wrenchhead who grew up on carbs and ignition points, always loved anything with an engine. My oldest son was an OTR driver for about 9 years and I share his love for the big tractors. The time I spend in the Army early 70s, I was in weapons and document security but had some limited exposure to their rolling stock. Always took whatever chance I could to get behind the wheel of even just a deuce and a half. I'm sure I'm not alone in joining you in your anticipation of your Pete's first turn of the drive shafts under its own power on its maiden voyage. Onward! Oh, and remembering the old mechanic's rule (one of many!) "Knuckles bleed easier than brakes!" :-)

Depending on how often you have to cage brakes... caging bolt sockets are a beautiful thing in case you’re on the side of the road. I also carry 8 new caging bolts because nature of the job the thing is always stuck in the chamber or someone clocked it inconveniently so it won’t remove without taking tires off. Nice work!

We never torque the nuts on the yokes. Even on our 600 cats with the big rearends. Just use a 1” drive air wrench and giver till she stops.

Some advice I've learned the hard way. As you put those caps on into the yokes coat them real good with anti seize. Next time you need to take the drive shaft out for any reason it will go far easier.
@joshp.2237
@joshp.2237 5 лет назад
Also when removing them dont pry on the flat part the bolts go through. You will break it apart and wont be able to re use it, as I'm sure you've noticed.

I suggest using a 'lube plate' on the RV's pin box and only greasing the kingpin and 5th wheel locking jaws. Just make sure that there isn't even any slight backlash when the kingpin is locked in.

Just a little helpful hint next time you need to take the u joint apart when the end caps come apart from the sleeve take a bottle jack with a small socket put it under the sleeve and Jack it up. This usually gets it to pop apart if not give it a couple raps with a small sledge hammer on the yoke

Using what you have to hand having the "proper tool" doesn't make you any less of a fitter when you do the next truck I'm sure you will have "more appropriate tools" (edit: the most obvious tool you are missing is a shop, cave, tent, learn-to or any other form of shelter 😂) Some guys have the "correct" tools and still botch the job can't wait for the weather to clear up for you so we can all get an update!
