@@TheRecordist I had a snark for so long the clamp doesn't work anymore so I got the new Super Tight Snark tuner. When you get the string in tune, the next time you hit it, it says it's out of tune again. All the time. New batteries don't help. I used my old one and it still works better than the new one. The strobe will be here Friday. I have three guitars that I'd like to check. Thanks again for the review. You have a new subscriber.

I bought the StroboClip HD tuner. Start with a straight neck, check the frets with rocker, and then set your intonation with the StroboClip. The results are right on the money. I checked the tuning afterwards using my Korg Pitchblack Kustom pedal tuner and it didnt even strobe. It appeared that the tuning was right on. The only problem with the Korg and most other tuners is that even if it appears in tune, there is that little space where it can be close one way or another and still requires adjustment based on what you hear. The StrobClip is a great product and comes with a 2 year warranty. I'd buy it again if I had too.

Something I've only just realised about the StroboClip. The apparent direction of movement of the wheel tells you which direction to turn the tuning key! If the pattern seems to turn clockwise (sharp) then you turn the key clockwise to flatten the string. And of course, the opposite is true if it's flat (counter/anti clockwise).

I agree 100% with your comments. The Peterson StroboClip HD is the best tuner I've ever owned, too. As a mandolin player, I've always had a bit of love-hate (or hate-hate) relationship with tuners. Most are made primarily for guitar (fair enough) and some just don't work properly with mandolins - even if they have mandolin/violin preset. I've got a couple of Snark tuners and a few mandolins, but my favourite for gigs is a Godin A8 mandolin. However, for this particular mandolin, my Snarks were telling me that the intonation is out from about the 8th fret (even though it sounded OK to me). The A8 doesn't have a floating bridge, so I was looking to take it my local tech guy to get it adjusted, but decided to buy a better tuner to confirm that there really is a problem. So I bought the Peterson. With some trepidation, I tried it on my Godin and tuned the open strings. Then jumped to the 12th fret. All the strings were perfectly in tune! Tried the 10th fret - all in tune. Then went up and down the fingerboard up to the 15th. All strings on all frets perfectly in tune (and the Peterson is the only tuner I've had that can actually lock onto the 15th fret of the E string). Tried it on my favourite practice mandolin (a Fender that I'd intonated myself). All the notes perfectly in tune. Tried the Mandolin sweetener - I couldn't hear any difference when tuning, but I think the chords sound nicer so I'm sticking with it. I'm not going to buy any more Snarks. I won't throw them away, though, because I think they're slightly easier to use for the first tuning after a string change, but I do ask myself why I bought so many in the past... My recommendation: if you're a mandolin player - buy a Peterson StroboClip! Best tuner I've ever owned.

I call them Shart tuners.... They are arguably more expensive than the Petersons. Total cost of ownership, factored for time. Get a Peterson it's likely to last a LONG time, maybe even the last tuner you buy. Every Shart tuner needs to add the cost of the inevitable replacement you'll be buying too soon. Not joking, because of the different failure rates and longevity of the products, the Petersons get cheaper with time, the Snarks get more expensive over time. Considering total cost of ownership over time, I wouldn't be surprised if these aren't actually cheaper than a Snark.

Thanks, this is the review I have been looking for. I noticed my Snark was giving an "in tune" reading across a range of pitch that was audibly sharper or flatter. So I really wanted to find something more accurate. Plus I spend a lot of time fiddling by ear to retweak the tuning to work better with the song I am doing. So I am hoping the guitar "sweetening" settings will get me there but a lot quicker. Nice review- and your jokes are better than most, too!

Those are great questions, Jesse! You do not need to ever update it. It’s not required. It’ll work just perfectly right out of the box. I'm thinking of getting this but a couple reviews mentioned the clip marring their finish. Did you notice anything worrisome about the clamping force or did they maybe have some instruments where the finish was on the cheaper side and easily scratched or bruised? You never mentioned it so I'm thinking it is the latter.
@TheRecordist
@TheRecordist Год назад
I didn’t mention it because I don’t think it’s a problem. It’s got really soft rubber clamps on it and I don’t feel that the clamping force is so hard that it would do that, however, that’s my take. I may be wrong. You might be right on cheap painted headstocks, it could be an issue if left on for months or years. But so would any clip-on tuner, I would think. I’d hate to be wrong on this, so I’ll not advise you one way or another, and instead perhaps leave that decision up to your discretion. Hope I’ve helped in some way.

You're a goofball and I mean than in a good way, not a mean way. But seriously .... I'm looking for a more accurate tuner and this may be the one for me. Unfortunately I could end up buying a few of them which could become costly but I'll get just one to start with. On the subject of Snarks, I've been using my snarks for quite a while. What I like about them is that the display head can rotate 360 degrees and for me, being a left-handled player, this means I don;t have to read the display upside down. Hopefully the Peterson clip on can be as acrobatic. Also, the only time my Snark stopped working is when one of the the plastic clip tabs decides to break and there's nothing to hold the tuner onto the stem. They seem to have solved that problem with a recent design change. Hopefully the Peterson clip on is resilient.

Hey. Haha. Thanks! The StroboClip HD does swivel and move and with a little though, you can make it work any way you need it to. However, it’s not as flexible as the snark. It does have some movement limitations. That said, it’s a fabulous tuner. My favorite clip on tuner of all time.

I used a D'addario clip on that was no nonsense and solid. I got it 6 years ago and for some reason it eats batteries now. My phone mic has some always on noise gate and guitar tuner apps do not work on it. After forgetting the "D" clip on tuner on a 2 month trip to Canada and getting sick of asking to borrow my wifes iphone every 10 minutes to play through my guitar collection there I decided enough was enough! I went to Long & McQuade and was told "The Snarks are the best", Well OK? Which one (there's like 10 different models!) "Uhhhh, this one, it can tune anything, guitar and bass too." It was on sale for $25 so I went out on a limb and trusted the guy. HOLY CRAP THAT TUNER SUCKED!! I never thought a tuner could be bad, but that thing actually was. That episode of misfortune was a year ago and since then I have been tuning with my boss TU-3 which I need to plug in to and can barley see the screen on. I'm going to pick one of these Petersons up. Great video!

Here is how I am seeing it... it's a few bucks more, but this is end all be all king daddy of clip tuners. More features, more accurate, better made.... My weird quandary now is that the HD can be had for like $52 right now... and the HDC is $80. Is it worth $30 to get the HDC? The HD was the best clip tuner until the HDC came out meaning that Peterson's only competition is... Peterson. I'm getting one or the other, and Peterson should feel pretty good that my only real debate is between two versions of their product. I haven't owned a Snark, but have known a few that have. Why don't I own one? I have known a few that did is why. If it was $20, you paid $30 too much. My previous and now lost clip tuner (that I am looking to replace) was an old Korg SHPro Sledgehammer. Also very accurate, and also strobe. Quite good. There are other good clip tuners out there (not Snark) But all my research puts Peterson on top. Leaving the only remaining question, HD or HDC for $30 more?
@TheRecordist
@TheRecordist 7 месяцев назад
Hey! I know EXACTLY what you mean! I love Peterson and they know it! As far as the differences, what I can gather is two major upgrades: multi color choices and rechargeable battery on the HDC. I don’t know if it matters to you to have a red screen or a blue one, or orange or yellow or whatever color you want. But if the orange color that comes with the original HD is less attractive to you, then the HDC might be the way to go. Also, the rechargeable battery. With the original HD, it takes a lithium button battery which I still have yet to change well past a year of constant use. But the HDC has a rechargeable battery that gets 6 hours of use per charge. If you play live, I’d think about charging it before every show. If it were me, I’d stick with the original HD because I like that I can easily swap out the battery when needed. It’s also cheaper. But maybe you want those two upgraded options. That’s up to you! Other than that, each one’s firmware is updatable (HD through a micro USB and HDC through USB-C), and you can download new tunings from the community. Hope this helps!

Just curious to know, as a beginner, if we get the intonation of a guitar set up right, and play for a while, how long should it stay in tune for? Ambient temperature will be a factor, so in an uncontrolled temperature environment this will fluctuate throughout the day, and obviously also with artificial heating or cooling switching on + off. But even in a well controlled ambient temperature environment, heat given out by the person and their hands working out on it, will still warm up the guitar a degree or two, depending on how energetic their playing is. Also, playing stuff where strings are bent may put strings out of tune, or using a tremolo arm? Like wise, playing on a stage indoors, where perhaps peoples activity + body heat, which will vary a bit between small and larger venues, and perhaps stage lighting, or outdoors where air temperature may fluctuate with changing cloud cover, are also going to be factors? So according to a fairly accurate tuner... how soon will i go out of tune? Realistically, i could need to retune every few minutes of playing, or every song / piece of music?
@TheRecordist
@TheRecordist 10 месяцев назад
Hey Richard. Well you’re right about all the factors you submitted. But intonation and tune are two different things. Intonation is the length of the string from nut to bridge. Tune is the tension. So after proper intonation, when tuned, all the strings resonate with each other precisely. The tune will hold for as long as the quality of your instrument will allow. It will need to be retuned regularly (playing live will be as needed, recording will be every take). Intonation slips over time. I generally reset my intonation every couple of months. I can always tell because when I have my guitar tuned properly but it still sounds a bit out, that’s when I need to redo the intonation. Hope this helps!

Hi thanks i get it. Which setting should be used to set intonation, equal temperament? If i intend to use a sweetened tuning, eg the GTR ( electric guitar standard tuning eadgbe), should this setting also be used to get the intonation right first? Hmmm... I may need to... LMAO! VIGO THE CARPATHIAN! Brilliant! ... return the PRS fake strobe clip on Snarky thing I paid 35 dollars for today. Also, I kind of feel a little bit 7 years old when a bird silhouette appears to tell me that I'm in tune. I mean, I realize I'm 7 years old but I don't need shit pointing it out for me anymore... at 48 years old... Just out of curiosity, is there any kind of animal silhouette on this tuner you're talking about? Like maybe a bird or a puppy or something?

How does it compare to the polytune clip tuners?
@TheRecordist
@TheRecordist 11 месяцев назад
Oh the StroboClipHD is miles better than the Polytune ones. The Polytune tuners have a history of crapping out really fast. They also burn through batteries. Also, nothing beats real strobe tuners. But the Polytunes are very colorful though. I’ll give them that!
@RichardBuckman
@RichardBuckman 11 месяцев назад
@@TheRecordist The polytune clip has been good to me. Based on the specs it’s got a stroboscope feature that gets it tuned to within 0.02 cents which has been accurate in my experience l and the battery is my second in a year so it hasn’t been bad in that regard either. But I’d be willing to try the stroboclipHD anyways.

Wish I could properly intonate my Godin Multiac S/A🤬! The curse of an acoustic. With such a ……(pricey) guitar, 13 pin GK3A & brass piezo pickups, it seems like SOMEHOW, SOMEONE, would find a solution 🤬. Don’t want to sell and pass the headache on to someone else and don’t want to sell cheap & lose money🤷‍♂️ I’ve had several prior and although not perfect, they didn’t scream “fretted notes SHARP” no matter how lightly I play😢😢 I’ve tried compensated nuts, etc🤷‍♂️

For $60 I would think it would have been re-chargeable. Everything else is.

I like that one is required to provide the battery. That way, when the battery inevitably fails, one only needs to replace the battery ($2) as opposed to the entire unit.

Haha. You taking about Boston Bruins? Nah. I’m not that cool. I just am not a sports guy but the only sport I will watch is hockey. And with hockey, I cheer for any Canadian team left. That’s how it goes. My earlier videos I used both Canadian and US pricing when talking about prices (which I used Montreal Canadiens and Boston Bruins logos. But I realized quickly that the ratio of US:Canada viewers was skewed in favor of the US, so I dropped the Canadian pricing. The original idea was to pick each a US and Canadian original lineup team and use that. Haha. Sorry.
