Sorry it's been over 2 months since the last installment - what I've learnt is 'Don't have kids!', unfortunately it's too late for me.
So the mower cuts grass! This video is mostly me making a blade for the mower.

Thanks Craig, slow progress. Will hopefully pick this back up in the spring and get it going for when I need to cut the grass.

1. You need the mower blade to be just up inside the mower deck as it creates a vacuum effect so it can pull the grass up to cut it. 2. The reason mower blades have little studs they also mount on is because if it was just a bolt going through then the blade would not spin with the motor or engine. It will wallow out the hole it is mounted on come loose and fly out. You need at least 2 points where it keeps it in place.

Hi, thanks for your comments. I will adjust the blade so that it is just within the deck as you have advised. It is working ok, but anything that improves it is worth doing. On your second point, the blade attached to the petrol engine on the mower is just attached with a single bolt, I just copied it. The rotation of the engine (and electric motor) are such that the bolt tightens itself with any resistance in the cutting direction. That said, you make a good point, I'll add an anti rotation pin on the next installment.

Hello Olly, Good update... looks like you have a winner with the lawn mower, just need to tidy everything up... I will be most interested to see the cheap VFD in action... it might be useful for my little shaper project... See you on the next one... Take care. Paul,,

Thanks Paul. I will hopefully get the VFD going in the next week or two. I'm pleased that the mower actually mows, but there's a lot of work to do yet. I saw you on the ARW discussion the other day, looks like you all had fun.

@@ollysworkshop The ARW thingy was fun and after the hours was up we spoke off line for nearly 2 hours which was very interesting learning about how other RU-vidrs do things and the challenges they have had.

Why not use the stock blade or a new blade? They're relatively inexpensive.

I wanted a good starting point, but reckoned that I would likely have to modify the blade, such as lightening it. It didn't take long to make, and that's really what it's all about. I could have just bought an electric mower and saved myself all the effort, which I seriously considered on a few occasions. Wouldn't have made much of a project though! Thanks for the question.
