Well at least it works better than the prototype made with old posters, nail clippings and a few loose robotic components...burnt all my food for a solid month as I kept getting mental "reminders" that it was "RAW!!!"....but hey, at least I got good at making lamb sauce though...
I love how outright offended Civvie gets at being called a common thief. “I’ve robbed gods!” Had me laughing for 5 minutes. Great work as always Civvie11
@@BourrinSavant the Quebecer slang for cops is 'bœuf', funnily enough, so he's almost there - the funny ha ha consonance makes the inaccuracy okay, though
I just realized something about the Builder's Children. They kinda look like a certain character from the infamous point-and-click Ring. *Fafnir:* "Wotan! We have completed Valhalla!"
I wouldn't be surprised if he eventually did do a video on it. With that said, I'd put money on that mad-lad Mandalore beating him to the punch. I'm not actually gonna put money on it, 'cause I'm not a gambling man, but you know what I mean.
That'd be...interesting given Civvie normally doesn't talk big politics in his reviews and like you literally can not review Disco without getting highly political. Like it's impossible
Fun fact about the "Builder's Children": their animations are basically those of the Robots from System Shock 2. And in a similar case, if you've ever wondered why the Hybrids hold their shotguns like swords in that game, it's because the Hybrids use the animations of human fighters from Thief 1. A lot of stuff was recycled along the chain of Dark Engine games, which I'd argue was a sensible thing to do when it came to the ambitions of Looking Glass. If it wasn't broke, and you're working within certain limitations, it's wise to make use of what you already have, rather than unnecessarily re-do work that's already been done. It didn't save them from bankruptcy, but at least it let them get Thief 2 out in a decent state. Also, I knew the gas was bad news, but I totally forgot that Droopy's gas basically turned people into dust!
11:31 Horrifying fun fact: You can remove a piece of the floor in this room to drop down to a small dump where the mechanists stashed a bunch of corpses and Garret says "I could really learn to hate these guys"
@@michaelandreipalon359 Yeah, the other two are supernatural bad guys. Karras is just a guy. One that happens to be very intelligent and suffer from severe schizophrenia (with probably one of the best representation of schizophrenia I've seen in media)
It's tragic that Petty Thief gets such little attention. Civvie has some of his best lines in this series, which I think is owed to him not having to talk over the shooting and action. Thanks for making these, even if it's just for your own enjoyment. I'm sure I'm not the only one who loves them.
My god those cutscenes still look unbelievable after all these years. Talk about creating a world and mood. Quite poetic to use the Hammer Haunts to destroy mechanists, since when compared to the mechanists Hammers are really the good guys here.
It'll take a long while for Civvie to try Deadly Shadows, but man, am I fearfully stoked for that moment. He's gonna struggle in the unmodded game, though.
@@Cunnysmythe Play on PC with the Sneaky Upgrade mod if you are unaware of it, it actually makes all mission levels one map each, resulting in less loading screens and a more immersive experience.
@@revenile Thanks, this'll make a big difference. I stopped playing in mission 3 or 4 because it felt too console-y and I couldn't get into it, everything felt like a minigame to me. Definitely think immersion was a big part of it
Look at that map design: And Karras said, "Let us give thanks to The Builder, for He hath formed my hands with fingers. And behold, my fingers interlock like cogs on a gear. I am part of His unbeholdable machine, and therein lies my salvation."
I love the part in the bank mission where you come across two robots stuck in an infinite conversation loop with each other, because their in-universe AI is too stupid to notice that they're saying the same thing over and over again for hours.
Part of the bank job i loved most was getting into one of the side areas early. I went up to a door i couldn't pick and seriously knocked on it by hitting it with the blackjack. The guard on the other side unlocked the door, came through, i swiped the key off him, ran in the room, shut the door and locked it behind me. I wish modern games would allow me that kind of freedom.
I love this series; Metal Age was one of my favorite stealthy games for years until Splinter Cell series came out. Also, nerd time: 19:25 Because thats what bombs and hand grenades mainly were up until the 1870s. The cartoon bomb meme was started because that shape for bombs was recognizable to people as historically accurate.
How so? Is not bad but easily the most boring part of the channel, i watched the first few of the Thief videos and now i dont even bother. Seems like a game that is way more enjoyable playing it than watching it no matter how much effort Civvie puts into turning it into an entertainning video, there is a reason is the series with less views
I always found it funny how they didn't give us a loot objective for the bank level. It's like they knew that no thief player worthy of the name could ever go through a bank without wanting to loot the place. No need for an objective, it's almost a point of pride
HELPFUL TIP: if your path is blocked by a deactivated robot just keep hitting it with your blackjack until it explodes into "gibs" and only its boiler is left then you can pass
really great and funny Petty Thief episode this one and though i've played this game many times i never thought to lure the haunts into the cathedral proper which was a great idea
The basement of the bank becomes surprisingly easy (in comparison at least) once you realize the little robots are blind until they are alarmed by sound. Also, they can be hacked to pieces with a sword, so you can do that to free yourself when trapped in a narrow corridor (very noisy though).
@@campionpesate4647 Tbf to you, not a lot of people would think to use a sword to smash a robot to pieces, specially one that can survive explosions XD
Regardless of his actual game appearance because of his voice its impossible not to picture Karass as a four foot tall human version of Droopy Dog with glasses.
About the cartoon bombs, that's what hand grenades used to look like in the olden days. Like during the 1700's and early 1800's. They even made flintlock grenade launchers for them. And bigger variants were fired out of fuse-lit mortars.
Pro tip: Letting the haunts out while the guards are still active doesn't count against the 'no kills' rule. Nerd note: Benny really sobered up after he took an arrow in the knee.
@@emissaryofcharybdis105 Steven Russell has done tons of voice work for Bethesda over the years. Hence the joke. That's right, Garett is also Belathor, Clavicus Vile, all the Mr. Handy variants (Codsworth), Nick Valentine (and DiMA) as well as Garrett and Karas and, of course, Benny. They could make it happen. I'm leaving out the "other voices" credits.
In T1 too When you're leaning forward you can blackjack guards in the face who are actively looking for you, it's a great little exploit that I relied on so much in later missions
Many thanks for the night vision edits! It definitely makes it easier to follow the action in darker places ^^ Also, there's something inherently hilarious about trying to bludgeon a robot to death while it just sits there & takes it
Forgot to say so earlier but I'm happy that to finally see part 2 of this series, the petty Thief series was really enjoyable and it was impressive to see how smart the ai were. Don't get it wrong they're plenty dumb but it's still cool to see how they react to a simple foot step and track down whereabout it came from, something that we kinda take for granted in modern games with stealth but I'm sure back then it was really cutting edge
1:55 for those wondering "jambon" in French means ham / sliced ham It kinda sounds like Gendarme if you say it really fast and with a bad accent (which is one of our many different police forces) But yeah, watch out the jambons are roaming the streets xD
Really appreciate the accurate captions on these. Helps keep the volume low when in bed at night so the waifu pillow doesn't complain have a Blessed weekend all 👌
I would say if he was petty he would take a number 2 on the Lords Chair.... with a note of like "This is how your stuff is gonna end in the end when I get the money out to fill my belly"
I'd really like to see Civvie play The Dark Mod, it was based on Thief but it's not ACTUALLY thief originally a mod for doom 3 BFG edition but was eventually made a standalone. I think he'd get a kick out of it. Also the sheer amount of user created content could provide content for YEARS.
I just discovered your channel and now i find you've run through my favorite game next to the original Deus Ex? Fantastic. Seriously though, T2:TMA is just about as close to perfection as this series got. And that's not nostalgia talking, i didn't play this game till i was in my 30's. The two Thief games were what made me fall in love with Stephen Russell's voice. He was also a big reason why I picked up Dishonored 2 and then i started to just enjoy the game because of how much it stole- uh borrowed from Thief 2.
I'm so deeply glad that you decided to fuck the algorithm and bring back Petty Thief Civvie. I hope they don't torture you too hard this week, love you bud. 😘
It's a cartoon bomb because it's a simple iron sphere, soldered together at the equator in halves and packed with gunpowder and sometimes other items like nails or smaller metal balls for shrapnel. It's one of the earliest and simplest grenade type explosives devised and used. And have become a shorthand in animation for a explosive device intended purely for harm. - Similarly it's why save-button iconography are of floppy disks that have not seen use for decades. Or why the 'call' button in skype and discord is a old stylized bakelite hand-held reciever/transmitter set. The bomb is fine and era accurate, it's your perception and contextual knowledge of it being a "bomb found in cartoons and iconography" that throws you off a bit. Short version: It is a bomb because it is the simplest shape a bomb can be.
