You make excellent comprehensive videos, Derek. I’m not a caver by any means, still; I’m diversifying my skillset and building appropriate/legal/safe kit for hazardous atmospheres/confined entry into aging government assets. Petzels’ HAZLOC seem to be the best despite their premium pricing and very low illumination values. It’s very difficult to find content on such a niche area; information that isn’t vendor driven or sponsored. Keep up the great work! Subbed!

I guess it's pretty obvious who my target audience is. Glad someone outside the caving community is getting some use as well. Thanks for the support!

Good evaluation you right on, I love Petzl but there are better true caving lights out there.

Great review! I'm still waiting for Petzl to wake up, remember their caving roots and make a Scurion killer.

Yes, they owned the caving headlamp market for awhile, but they've allowed others to pass them by. It seems they're more interested in the likely higher revenue in the general consumer and rope access markets. I'm glad they still make caving gear, but unfortunately they aren't really innovating in this area.

Awesome stuff, Derek! You have me sold lol. I'm in the process of looking for a new headlamp. I do a lot of recreational caving. I've been running a blackdiamond (icon) and a princeton tech (apex) for over 10 years. Do you know if the light is mountable on the petzl vertex?

Good stuff. I used to have an Ultrawide with a home-made 8 x 18650 battery pack. The thing ran forever. Not interested in this one. I'm still thinking of the Scurion 1500.

I'm glad I watched your review before spending $250 on the Duo Z2. Thanks and subscribed! I'm just getting back into caving and recently took my old (first gen) Duo headlamp to a local abandoned limestone mine, turned on the zoom and I couldn't see much of anything! Sad to hear that the modern versions are still underpowered. Can you recommend a good currently available (lithium ion battery) headlamp that would be good for caving/abandoned mine exploration? Thanks! Ziggy

Probably the best low-cost option that is bright, efficient, waterproof and reliable would be a Zebralight. Many cavers use two of them for redundancy and the ability to mix a flood beam with spot beam. Roughly $180 for a pair and they run on single 18650 Li-Ion cells.

Converted an old DUO with a Custom DUO made in UK. If you already own an old DUO, then that's a good option, if not I totally agree with your review, the price is not justified and Petzl is way behind. It's a pity, for a brand that is so closely associated with caving history.

Good review. I went from a Justrite electric lamp with a 6 volt 7amp gel cell to a nite core and now I’m going to the Fenix with a lumen mode of 130 lumens and a reported run time of 15 hours. Even if I get 12 hours on one 18650 battery that’s a big difference from that 6volt gel cell in weight. I looked at petzl but didn’t want an all plastic light that seemed over priced. Have you tried any of the Fenix headlamps yet?
@DerekBristol
@DerekBristol Год назад
I have a Fenix model, but don't use it much. I don't have a lot of experience with their lights, but many of my friends have used them with good results. Some of their models are good options for those looking for lights in the

Do either the Z2 or the S have the option for a red light? I'm a SAR tech and am in the market for a super durable waterproof headlamp after absurdly higher than normal rainfalls this year have wrecked two of mine, but my squad requires headlamps to be used with red light only. I do quite a bit of caving hence why this is on my radar, but if I'm spending this much on a headlamp I want to be able to use it to fill multiple roles.

I don't believe any of the Duo models are equipped with a red LED.

15 hours for max runtime on the duo is really a disapointment in my opinion. They should have an economy mode that just sips power and lasts for a minimum of 24 hours, but 48 hours would be a much better option for small, up close tasks in pitch black where you barely need any light.

Yes, there's a lot to be disappointed with at this price point.

Hi! What is your opinion about Zebralight lamps? with regard to Petzl my personal opinion is that they will lose that game in the end.

If you had to pick one would it be zebra or duo?

Petzl headlamps were revolutionary back in early 2000s. Sady, their evolution stopped there. Zebralight is a whole new universe compared to stone age of Petzl. Got the Tikka plus, Tikka XP2, Zebralight H600w, H603c so I can talk from experience.

Perhaps, but the original Duo headlamp was designed for cavers, and this new series of headlamps resurrected the Duo name, which gave many cavers the impression that it was designed for them. It's a shame because Petzl dominated the electric caving headlamp market for many years.

Wow! These prices though! Sorry Petzl....Not In A Million'. To take underground? I'm just not seeing it. I would sooner take a pocketfull of Fenix, Nitecore, Zebras or candles. Get real. I want a lot more proper kit for that many bucks!

I can't believe an alkaline battery head lamp could cost 250 dollars
@DerekBristol
@DerekBristol 5 лет назад
I agree. I think the original AA powered Duo may have been over $100 when it was released, but the pricing has inflated a lot. The Face2Face technology may be part of their justification, but that's of virtually no use to most potential customers.

@@DerekBristol it would make sense to add the Reactik, spelling, lighting but I guess that's too expensive?
@DerekBristol
@DerekBristol 5 лет назад
@@z50king29 Looks like the Petzl Reactik ranges from $85 to $120. Not too expensive, but I'm working on reviews of at least 3 other premium headlamps first. Not sure I've seen many cavers using the Reactik. The most popular low cost / high output AA lights I see underground are the Princeton Tec Apex and a few of the Fenix models.
