Lott was a Clean player. His hits were legal. He did not spear like many others that came after. He was a shoulder first player. Best that ever was at Safety.

@@yeildo1492To be fair, Strong Safety and Free Safety were entirely interchangeable at the time. Depending on the Game, either Safety would be listed at either position.
@justinlast2lastharder749
@justinlast2lastharder749 5 месяцев назад
Honestly. He's Top 5 for sure and changed the Position, but there are Safeties he influenced that were better. Ed Reed was a better Pure Safety. Polamalu was a better Strong Safety. Sean Taylor was the Second Coming but Stronger, Faster, and more Skilled... Lott isn't the Best Ever, but he did define the position and evolve it to where it is now.

Fun fact: That goal line stand was done with 10 Niners on the field. Coaching in an all-star game I was lucky enough to meet Lott. He has the presence of a 5 star general. He passed his rings around the players and he told them "If you are thinking of taking one, remember that I have one good hit left in me!" The kids loved him. Hell, we all did.

Nice to see Lott and the 49er Defense get more credit. Walsh owes a huge part of his success to Seifert, the most underrated coach ever. In 81 he was the DB coach that had four rookies, and three went to the Pro Bowl. Lott was a CB, not a safety then. Then as the video says, the 49er Defense had an amazing run in big games, with Seifert as DC or HC. As head coach, BTW, the 49ers has the two of the greatest offense showings ever, with two different QBs and Seifert as the HC, not Walsh.

That 1984 49ers defense definitely doesnt get enough credit. They played three playoff games that year and didn't give up a single point in the 2nd half in any of them. In fact they gave up only one offensive touchdown the entire playoffs, which is the same amount the 1985 Bears did. Amazing performance that's sadly overlooked.

Two different styles and positions. Ronnie was a run stopper who’d close and knock the ball out of the receivers hands to cause an incompletion. Prime was the best one on one cornerback who shutdown one side of the field. Ronnie provided the safety help over the top to go along with his toughness. You didn’t need a safety over the top to protect Prime getting burned and you’d have a safety freed up to put in the box or help if the team had a mismatch at TE. Ronnie was the best safety. Prime was the best cornerback and punt returner.
@Sixfigas
@Sixfigas 9 месяцев назад
@@bradmyers5354 but Ronnie was also a lock down corner when he played that position. He is too close to Prime in interceptions to say he wasn’t as good. You actually proved my point because we know Prime couldn’t play strong safety.

When someone is willing to have part of their finger amputated to play in the playoff game that definitely makes them as tough as they come. I’m from Louisiana and growing up in the 80s I always hated the 49ers because they were in the same division as the Saints in the old NFC West. Even though the divisions realigned in 2002 I still don’t care for the 49ers yet Ronnie Lott is probably my favorite defensive player ever because of how hard he would hit players and I think Montana is the greatest quarterback ever. So even though they ruined a lot of Saints seasons when the Saints started finally having good football teams in the late 80s its hard to hate on the actual players on that team. They were awesome.
