It is autumn and Phalaenopsis orchids should be spiking at this time right? well not around here they don;t :) they are growing leaves!
▼▼▼More info bellow!▼▼▼
Over the past months my Phalaenopsis orchids rejuvinated from their innitial state whioch you can view here • New Phalaenopsis Orchi... and here • Phalaenopsis with seve...
But they are not showing signs of stopping, as the prolonged summer goes on they are growing new leaves and tons of roots. No spikes!
This is not all that bad though, as more leaves mean more energy, more food and.. many places for multiple spikes! so when temperatures do decide to go lower we will see how they will react, hope for multiple spikes!

I'm one of the few weird people who actually loves phalaenopsis leaves, maybe it's because they don't "remind" me of any other plant :) I also love their roots, especially when they go crazy like those at 0:26 (one of my phals is now stuck to my coffee table, but it looks great lol)

haha the roots on mine will get stuck on the shelves too, but I am trying to make them grow over it :P I am curious how long they can get :))

Your Phalaenopsis orchids look great. I am sure you will see a lot of beautiful flowers. Your orchids just do what they need to do based on the new climate. So, don't worry about and let then go with the flow.

My dad passed away last year so I neglected my entire collection for close to a year. Lost half my collection the only survivors was cause my hubby misted them. I'm grateful and just cut all stems and flowers off and re potted them all about 3 months ago so they can focus on growing roots and leaves. And they are starting to come back around. So happy peals are my fav.💜❤️💙💚💛

I hope they will start blooming for you again soon. It's nice that they are so healthy and look very happy too. Beautiful roots! My phals have sometimes made spikes at the same time leaves were coming, and leaves at the same time they were in bloom, so I think it's hard to know for sure what they are planning. :)

hehe indeed :) mine seem to pause leaves when they spike sometimes, or grow them really slow, so I would peffer them to finish these leaves before spiking :P

Don't worry, the same thing happens to my phals here in Greece. They'll start spiking later around Christmas and bloom in the spring. It just isn't cold enough for them to start spiking yet. As for the number of spikes, I haven't seen any difference than when I bought them. One of them gave me 4 spikes last season!

Wow those roots are so awesome looking! Its fall here in Florida and my phals are still growing, and one of my oncidiums had dropped its blooms but held the spikes, and a month later it had begun to produce more buds from the lower nodes! So of course I trimmed off the ugly dead yellowing parts but they are now coming into flower again. Such a beautiful orchid with orange yellow flowers that complement the clay pot its growing in!

Hi Dani! I'm a frequent viewer of all of your videos and I really appreciate all of the information you've given us! I have a quick question about blooming and fertilizer. One of my phals is growing its second large leaf and should be done around october when the temperature cools. I'm curious about the indication for the "bloom fertilizer". Do I start using that fertilizer when I want the orchid to create a spike or should I only use it when I already see an orchid spike? Also, should I use it throughout the flowering period? Thank you Dani!! Oh, and one more thing - I have phals and oncidiums right now. Which species should I get next? :D
@Zapton5
@Zapton5 7 лет назад
Ok this is old but I noticed in the comments. Danny wondering how long phal roots can get. Well my oldest one has the longest roots I have EVER seen on a phalaenopsis. I have been doing a good job of putting off starting a channel. It's moments like this that make me think I should start one. Love you Danny and your orchids look wonderful like always.

One of the major things I like less with Phals is that there are no easibly available scented commercial hybrids. I love scented blooms, and an easy to care for scented Orchid is always welcome. Managed to get a second flower spike on my Nelly Isler, though flowers dont smell and are much paler and more spotty, so it probably got too little light. Pharmacies smell great by the way, really like that scent, same goes for hospitals for some odd reason. :)
@MissOrchidGirl
@MissOrchidGirl 8 лет назад
Hi Calle, Nellys will have whiter blooms in warmer temperatures or after some stress :) they get the really nice red blooms in lower temperatures, plus a better fragrance :P yes that's what I miss with Phals too, but I do have a few complex hybrids with a fragrance :D they are out there, just very rare and not a very strong fragrance.

Hi, I don;t think it's a good idea with Phals :P they are warm growers, this works with kingianum and nobiles, but I think Phals will have serious cold damage from those temperatures.

I can't make any sense of my NoID mini phal. It grows roots and leaves like crazy, and it grew two spikes in December, another in February, then another popped out last week! The flowers only last a few weeks and the third spike was so big that it's still blossoming new buds even after the older ones have died off. It's like it's in high-speed or something lol. Is this common? Also, it started what looks like a root but it's missing its pointy green tip...it's rounded and stubby and almost kinda fuzzy at the tip. Maybe just a deformed root? Thank you! Your videos are very informative and relaxing to watch 😊

I live in west central Florida where the phal's growing season is very long as well, it is a 10 leaf phal with a lot of air roots, very healthy, about 2 years old. it has a new leaf that is very stubborn in growing in the wrong direction...I'm having a real hard time getting it to stand up and turn to be in line with the others...and, it will not produce any flower spikes...any thoughts, comments, suggestions? one mistake I know I made was not subjecting it to cold enough temps in the very short "winters" we have here.

My Phal has 10 leaves! It originally had 2 double flower spikes. When the flowers fell off i cut back to the first bud node, leaving the majority of the spike still. That was a year and a half ago at least. I've repotted, and its grown roots and many more leaves but no more flowers. It looks healthy - maybe the leaves are very slightly darker 🤷🏻‍♀️ but is 10 big leaves a bad sign? Ps. - love your videos, theyre so helpful

Hi Dany, Very beautiful, healthy and strong plants. I have one question. Is it not an option to put some of them outside somewhere into a sheltered place to induce a flower spikes growth? I do not know your climate very well but I think there should be not colder then 15 in the night time and around 20 during the day. Thank you, Pavel
@MissOrchidGirl
@MissOrchidGirl 8 лет назад
Hi Pavel, it's not an option at the moment since we get 20 degrees or a bit more in the night time now. But I think in november we will reach 18 degrees so maybe they will spike then :) my gh is always open so temperatures are about the same as outside :)

Hello, my Phal is growing a new leaf too! This is the first one I haven't killed (thanks to your videos) so I'm really excited. I'm wondering if it's important to orient the plant towards the light a certain way to help the leaf grow properly or if it knows which way to go naturally. Any thoughts?

Hi Dany, one of my phals constantly producing sap on the leaves, Why is that? Also, Could you Please do in nearest future an update on your kingianum dend, I do not know how to make it bloom here in FL. Right now it is cooling off for winter rest in fridge for few weeks. Since your climate is now close to mine, I just wonder how it's gonna adapt. By the way what is the correct spelling of your name.
@MissOrchidGirl
@MissOrchidGirl 8 лет назад
Hi Anna, it's normal, new growth is more prone to oozing sap than older growth. Some orchids are just very excessive :) well my kingianum is seriously set back and will not bloom this year, so I will not attempt a blooming, next year I will try some things with him and maybe it will bloom :) well my name is not an english name so I don't really mind any spelling :P

The leaves seem strong. Any advice would be helpful.

Hi, is it a Phalaenopsis? well if the orchid looks better now that you potted it and hydrated it, keep doing what you do and try to offer the care required by this species. It is a hardy orchid so I think it will be successful :)

Ciao Dana! Phals ai tai in acest video arata superb! E in bark de 1-2cm. Good bye mortgage!! Am pus-o in moss apoi in bark ca nu i-o mers bine si intr-in final "glorios" i-au putrezit radacinile! Parca da o mica radacina (its got a tiny bump on the side). For all temp in camera nu scade sub 20 de grade in perioada asta a anului.... Mersi mult!
@MissOrchidGirl
@MissOrchidGirl 8 лет назад
@ancapasca
@ancapasca 8 лет назад
MissOrchidGirl mersi mult! De fiecare data cand le spun alor mele LAST CHANCE OR TRASH CAN... Ceva se intampla! Asa i-am zis la Gigantea, am fost acasa o sapt and a tiny bump appeared for the meantime! Imi doresc f mult o Aclandiae si pt asta am rabdare...
@ancapasca
@ancapasca 8 лет назад

MissOrchidGirl I'm probably wrong but I'd rather be wrong than not mention it. I once lost a phal because a tiny bit of bark got trapped in a leaf joint and rotted the crown :(
@MissOrchidGirl
@MissOrchidGirl 8 лет назад
oh no worries, water never reaches there so that piece of seramis is acting like a rock :P
@laughingachilles

MissOrchidGirl I suppose inorganic media doesn't have the same potential to harbour fungus and mold as bark does. This happened to me ages ago, I've mostly switched to hydroton now. :)

I notice your Phal"s are in front of a windows. I am trying to grow several Phals but have read they should not be in direct sun light. Is it ok to place them on radiator covers at the window in my house?
@MissOrchidGirl
@MissOrchidGirl 8 лет назад
Hi, Phalaenopsis can stand in front of windows no worries, but it depends on the orientation. My window is a west one so sun only reaches in later afternoon, which for my orchids is ok as it isn't hot sun anymore :)

Hey! I have two phalenopsis and a miniature one and here is still warm they are producing a TON of new leaves and new.. sprouts..? Like new plants from the center body.. is it normal?
@MissOrchidGirl
@MissOrchidGirl 8 лет назад
Hi, the new sprouts are keikis, baby plants produced on the axis of the orchid. They are normal, but not necessarily a ton, can I see a picture? just upload a picture to photobucket, flickr, instagram, imgur or g plus and share the link in a comment here, I'll take a look :)

The green dangling roots outside the pot is normal ? Are you supposed to let them dangle like that ? Because I've stuffed mine inside the pot 😱
@warrenzevonsangryghost6055
@warrenzevonsangryghost6055 7 лет назад
Far from an expert, but my understanding is that air roots should be left as such. I had one some years ago that had an extensive air root system and every once in a while (every month or so when I remembered) I'd mist them to keep 'em happy. Other than that, unless they are dried up and dead, I leave them be.

Thank You for the information. I will just let them be then n_n

humming bird they are air roots. So you shouldnt put them in the medium. Just go ahead and leave them above!

Danni! what do you do to get so much roots? mines are growing leafs at the moments but I wish they had so much aireal roots like yours! :)
@MissOrchidGirl
@MissOrchidGirl 7 лет назад
Hi, Phalaenopsis will normally go crazy with aerial roots on their own, but the roots tend to grow longer depending on humidity. This is the first time I manage to keep them this long, but there is a lot of humidity around them now due to the clay pots. So raising the humidity around them will help them grow longer :)
@LaBucci
@LaBucci 7 лет назад
MissOrchidGirl so clay pots are great for humidity!? I kind of want to put mine in clay pots, I have them in clear pots at the moment
@AismenA
@AismenA 7 лет назад
Those clay pots do look great. I don't have great humidity in my apartment, and for that reason my Phalaenopsis has to be in a clear pot with holes...cause I need to submerge it into water for couple of hours and then let it drain... At first I was not doing so, I only left it into water with a bit of fertilizer for 5-15 minutes... but the plant was not doing great...droopy leaves. Once, I accidentally forgot to take the plant out of the water for hours, and was so scared it will die, but the plant rejoiced after that long bath, leaves got up...and was enjoying it for over a year :D And it was right after that discovery that the plant acted like yours do...new leaves, roots...I hoped for some flower spikes, but nope...Hope yours get to spike! After all, you are the pro...I was still learning...just hoping the plant lives! Once more, thank you for teaching all of us about these extraordinary plants! Every advice of yours is presented in very soothing and pleasant voice and manner. It is a joy to learn. ^_^

Awesome video. Can I ask a question please.. Just wondering about liquid potash on phalaenopsis. It's potassium (k) which reduces stress and makes plants more resistant to pests and diseases. Also produces better blooms and plants etc. what's your opinion? Just wondering. I got some liquid potash for my fruits yesterday, and noticed it can be used for orchids, though dad has never tried it...
@MissOrchidGirl
@MissOrchidGirl 8 лет назад
Hi, I never tried it stand alone but I use a high k fertilizer at the moment, I like the results so far :)

MissOrchidGirl thank you. 😊 my dad is going to try it on one of his mericlones he's got several of, at the weaker solution. I love his phalaenopsis.. They're such wonderful orchids.
