For everyone born 1970 onwards I salute you.I remember watching this at 13 years old and being comforted by a movie that understood my trauma.😊Here I am 53 and still that teenager.Anyone who is a fan of this movie is cool in my eyes.
Came here to pay respects to Angus Scrimm. Rest in peace Tall Man, may you forever be remembered as one of the best villains in horror film history, among your various other roles.
@bee boo No Candyman himself didn't have a theme. Helen did have a theme though and i guess you could consider that the theme song of the movie. And there were 3 Candyman movies.
@bee boo If by piano music in the end you mean the music that plays when Trevor is in the bathroom just before Helen comes for him, then yes that's the one. And there was going to be another Candyman movie releasing in june this year but due to the virus it was delayed to 2021.
First time i heard this theme was Entombed song "Left Hand Path", back then i didn't have a clue it's from this movie, but i always had this feeling it would perfectly fit to some kind of classical horror movie ... many years later while watching Phantasm i instantly got goosebumps when this theme kicked in :)
@@ig-8892 Wait a minute. I thought Reggie Bannister composed the music. Or were they the ones who wrote the music and Reggie played it? Correct me if I'm wrong lol
The music has a Italian giallo feel. It’s feel like the US version of the goblins. This is not a orchestra but a rock band who decided to play for a movie.
A big shout out to JJ Abrams and the people at Bad Robot for doing a 4K restoration of the film. After settling for my MGM DVD over the last 15 or so years I can't wait to absorb an all time favorite in HD quality. A fitting tribute to Angus Scrimm's legacy
I can pretty comfortably say that Phantasm is in my top 3 favorite horror movies of all time, possibly even #1. When I first saw the movie I completely despised of it and thought it was nothing but stupid the whole way through, but there was one thing I couldn't deny I loved, and that was the theme. I found myself listening to the theme through this video constantly which caused me to think about the MOVIE constantly. As I thought about the movie more and more I became obsessed with the film and was trying to figure out what everything in the movie meant and as I developed these ideas I started to love the movie more and more. Today, I do think the film is a masterpiece and one of the most notoriously misunderstood films in cinematic history and I essentially owe my love of the film to the theme song, it IS the greatest horror movie soundtrack of all time to me, Halloween? Pfff, nothing compared to Phantasm. I am so grateful for this film, I truly am.
Along with Maniac Cop and Pumpkinhead, this is easily the most underrated horror movie of all time. The fact that the Tall Man is not as iconic as Freddy Krueger or Jason Vorhees baffles me. And it annoys me that it is clear Slenderman was based off of the Tall Man, and became iconic, but didn't care to credit the film
@@jdottwoogdk7791 I'd agree that Myers, Leatherface and Jason are fairly overrated... but Ash? To be honest with you, I don't really see him get talked about much
The Phantasm movie/series was indexed in Germany until 2017, why??? But splatter and gore like Saw and similiar crap are on prime time TV 🤷♀Altho I can remember I saw rented versions in the early 90's or so. I wonder when they actually put it on index. at least they stopped the sequels at some point. Unlike Halloween, they keep getting worse and the remakes were totally boring. But I fall for it every time and give it a try. I'm always disappointed afterwards. The last one that was reasonably entertaining was Resurrection 2002 imo. But the only ones I really liked were the Original and H20. Maniac Cop I have seen back then too, but I don't remember anymore. Hellraiser I remember a bit 🤔Watched too many horror movies back in those days. The original Suspiria is interesting too. I don't know the remake.
@@thebasedgodmax1163 The dead black suit? The extremely pale face? The ability to randomly appear behind you? Plus, in Phantasm IV, there's a bit in the hearse where literally Slenderman appears It was actually confirmed that they inspired the look of Slenderman off the tall man
***** I never managed to truly understand Phantasm, sometimes I wonder if there's anything to understand at all. Yet my bones keep telling me it's a great movie. So I have these mixed feelings towards it...
Roger Gurman I totally get what your saying, i technically see phantasm as a bad movie and yet something tells me this is a masterpiece and I find myself wanting to watch the movie constantly, and I pretty much never want to watch any of the sequels except maybe Oblivion, I have the unpopular opinion its the best sequel
Back in the older days, they knew how to make horror, and music is a huge factor in my opinion for the tone of the whole atmosphere of a scary movie. Today horror movies get some corporate commercial rock band to play the theme music, and it completely takes away from any kind of sense of foreboding on weather to go through with watching the movie, because you're not sure if you will be able to handle it, or take a chance and be haunted for years to come! Actually, one of the main things I remember from any horror films that really would make a movie stand out, was the music, and sound affects!
Agreed. I remember watching the original Amityville Horrors one and two as a kid. It use to freak the life out of me both the theme music and sound effects. I've never been the same since lol
horror fan Yes, I will agree those are the better ones of these days, but in general the horror movies I grew up with, and what is out now, just to me don't have the really creepy factor, as those I seen as a kid.
+Mojosfire : Check out the album The 'Spider's Lullabye' from King Diamond. Great chilly tunes with awesome intros, and I absolutely agree. They did know how to make some spine chilling music back in the day.
I own numerous copies of all the phantasm movies and i watch them all the time and the commentary and extras the phantasm movies are one of those i cant imagine my life without them i it. I was born in 1977 so phantasm and dawn of the dead came out in 1978 been watching them my whole life.
Michael Aguilar Ive had dreams like that. So terrible that Im telling myself, “Wake up! Wake up! Youre dreaming!” Only for something to appear and remind me that I’m not (even though I still am.) Kinda dreams where you wake up at 330 AM and dont want to go back to sleep
It's like that scene in Evil Dead II where Ash is gripping the sink and looking in the mirror, telling himself, "Everything's alright. It's gonna be ok." Then his reflection comes out of the mirror, grabs him and shouts, "No! It's Not!"
I was at the right age growing up in the 80's. I remember going to the movies to see this and I loved it. The music by Tangerine Dream adding that magic they first created in "Legend". The flying sphere of death, the Tall man and the Dwarfs creeped me out. A cult classic. Boy!!!
This movie really madea huge impact on me and my little brother when we first watch it with our uncle. I've been writing for about 10 years and me and my brother are working on a remake to keep the spirit and essence and also introduce a new generation to The Tall Man.
When you compare "horror" movies of today with a gem like Phantasm, you can't help but react the same as Mike did viewing The Tall Man through binoculars ""What the fuck?"
man I know the composer has to be raking in alot of money cause this song is still be sampled to this day. Can't tell you how many versions I have heard of it. It just has that eerie horror feel to it. Perfect song for setting a dark atmosphere
The best version of this incredible song. Still gives me chills every time I hear it, and every time I watch that classic first movie. Absolutely chilling and dark.
seriously, the best horror movie theme of all time. the fog theme comes close second for me. just bought the phantasm movie poster to frame on my wall and i couldn't be happier.
The best parts of Phantasm were the silly parts. What made it good was that the silly didn't overshadow the horror. That "finger-turning-into-space-bug" scene was funny as hell.
I first saw this movie years ago on Amazon Prime, and didn’t remember anything that happened in it afterwards. I just rewatched it on Shudder, and while I can honestly as that it didn’t jog my memory, it was certainly more memorable this time around.
Boooooy I remember popping this movie in for the first time. This was like last year too, the main menu came on and I was hooked by the art and music alone... After watching it became my favorite movie (franchise). I didn't have a fav movie for a long time. I just loved it.
I’ll never forget ever the first time watching this movie not knowing what to think and then BOOM the music hits I instantly fell in love with it!! A classic and underrated horror movie one of the best!!
Funny thing is i wasnt alive when this movie was released. Im 32 but still old enough to respect a classic horror film like phantasm! Thx to my dad showing me this lol
One of my favourite horror movies. The blurring between whats real and dream is what makes this movie, even the theme tune conveys this, that feeling of fear with a whimsical, yet daunting element and the whole time being dream like. Love it!!!
Coscarelli is a God! I watched a few Friday the 13ths and some of the Phantasms and saw how much more imagination went into these phantastic films in comparison.
In 96 I was terrified into this movie. Was a late night staying with my Grandma I was 6... Alone in a Giant house. Oldschool like 2foot thick big screen tv. Grandma threw on Never Ending story. Well, didn't pay attention and this masterpiece came on while she was up stairs closing up for the night... I was so freaked out I couldn't look away. I went to bed and said nothing. Terrified I didn't sleep. Forever a part of my life I'll never forget . I revisited all this as of this week. I'm 30 now. :) Can't wait to re-watch it for the first time since.
2:23 One of my favorite movies. Was 13 when it came out and still love the movie. The theme melody is ageless. The scenes in the movie were perfect for the soundtrack .
+Mano Saarinen It's funny that when I was listening to the track for the first time, I desperately tried to remember where have I heard the music that was suspiciously similar. Many years later while rewatching Phantasm I thought: "Wait a minute..." and rushed to my player.
It was on the TV, The Original, with this theme tune ( which I've known since childhood) twice, when I lost two people in my life. It is a phonetic bridge to the Afterlife for me.
I had an old friend who just lived and breathed this movie and song. He even bought a hearse. I had to give him a side-eye but still loved him. This brings back so many memories.
I think what makes the original phantasm great was the weirdness. I wasn't sure if it was shoddy editing or the disjointedness in the movie was on purpose. It gave it a weird feeling sort of like the scenes were out of order. Fantastic movie, that is a cult classic. Favorite parts were, is Jody dead? Is the tall man real? How did Reggie survive? It was lack of explanation that made this movie incredible.
i was obsessed with this song when i was 13, but forgot the name and where it came from, 5 years later i have found it, let me just bask in success 😔😔😔✨
this is one of my few favorite horror movies, nightmare on elm street, the exorcist, hellraiser, the fly(remake), the thing, suspirira(goblin), reanimator, halloween, the bloob(remake), the shinning, return of the living dead, the texas chainsaw massacre(1972), evil dead and of course phantasm, i hope one day to finally see the last movie of phantasm, phantasm V ravager, anyway i'm going to miss you Angus Scrimm, you gave me amazing nightmares back in the day, R.I.P Angus Scrimm and long life to phantasm
