Why would they call this "Phantom Power"? This is an on-board preamp. It's not phantom powering anything. I think it's a very bad marketing choice, especially using a term that means something completely different.

It kind of reminds me of the Seymour Duncan BMP-1 Blackouts pre-amp module. I had put one of those in an Ibanez I used to own and it was pretty cool. That system is a lot smaller too. You should compare the two systems.

In the early 90's I installed a EMG PA-2 20 db preamp in my Les Paul with Passive Pickups to launch my Marshall JMP-1 into Outerspace!! Enjoy Your Day Leon!!

Having it as a switchable circuit (as you set it up) is brilliant. I preferred the cleans without it but especially on the big low tuned chords it did a great job. But the real star to me is that Les Paul! I love the neck on it in particular!

It was an absolute basket case when I first got it, so anything I can do to treat it always feels like setting the universe right :p

I wonder how this would sound in a baritone or a guitar with 7 or more strings. I bet it could be really useful at cleaning up their frequency response.

Very cool.. I saw it and right away said it makes your pickup active. It for sure did seem to be like an EQ being turned on.. If it kills noise too, then it's great! Great idea too.. Especially if it works for single coils or p90's with all that sixty cycle hum. very cool sir.. I love it.. I would install it in guitars I already have with pickups I already like. If passive especially and if it also stops noise I would for sure use it.. One of the reason I love EMG's and I know others hate them, but I love them is that I like their EQ and I love how quiet they are since I love living in the dirt world as much as possible. 😛 I agree that it's thinking out of the box and I also agree it's a good idea sir! Thanks for making my morning with that Les Paul.. I love that shaved neck and huge cutout for the moog electronics Gibson bought out back in the day! Be well brother and be safe sir!

What a stooky unit this thing is, which I love the sound it produce. It would be stooky to hear it in a ambient setting and see how the boost affect the overall sound. 13:35: To answer your question, yes it does appeal to me, though would I install on REG? Not to sure as that guitar is priceless to me, and don't know if it'll dis-respect Rod himself (aka the original owner of that guitar) I change/modify, or adding stuff to it. Either ither hope you all are having a stooky day/night

I hear more treble with the active unit. No surprise. Don't get it...why would anyone carve out a chunk of piece of wood from a valuable guitar to insert this? Why isn't there a plug and play version like the Brian May treble booster?

I'm tempted to fit one onto a little module that attached to a guitar strap just because

I guess I'm a bit ambivalent. I really like what it did for the tone-- not just the volume but the clarity. But given the difficulty you might face with many guitars' small control cavity, I just wonder if a pedal with the same characteristics might not be a better option. It's a very interesting device though.

Hey Leon, I liked it all around - especially the cleans, it made them leap out. Having an EMG-pupped axe with the "Afterburner" adjustable on-board boost is surprisingly versatile with the "boost" at the fingertips, so I find this piece very interesting. There are some questions, and as you demoed with the PEQ, that was in the ballpark. - Were you alluding towards it made the guitar feel and sound like you were switching between active and passive pups on the fly? - How hot are the stock pups in the guitar you demoed it with? - Would that be a factor in the effectiveness of the Ti12 if the pups used with it were of a hotter variety (say like 12-16k)?

I'd be more inclined to use the EQ and tone matching/shaping capabilities of my Modeler.

nice review! I think with a TC Electronic Spark (my favourite pedal) you can have a similar thing in pedal form, but with more options...

I would rather have it as an outboard gear/pedal than inside the guitar. But.....if installed in a guitar, the toggle switch you installed would be the way to go.

Interesting little unit - reminds me of a couple of boost pedals I have previously used, but obviously implementation of how it works is very different. I’m curious, how does it react to the guitars volume knob? Have an awesome day Leon 😊🤟🏽🙏🏽

I really should have demo'd that. Seems to retain the behaviour pretty well. I really want to fit one of these in my bass!

Considering it is not built into the architecture of the pickup and its after all other components and lastly has no controls for gain, tone, compression ect.. I would just have a preamp at my feet like most of us already do

I remember something like that from the early 80s. Bartolini made something called the "Cube." It was the same kind of installation as this item. One thing you didn't do with this T12 is demonstrate how it sounds when you roll off the volume knob. Have you tried that, and what was your impression when you did?
@LeonTodd

That's a really good point and I should have covered that.

As I play bass as well I find the idea of onboard active preamp (even for passive pickups) useful in live situation especially playing through an amp. Phantom power wouldn't work as guitar effects are unbalanced level.

Apparently they're using subtle envelope filters on the low and high end which might explain that!

May u tell me if the stetsbar stay in tune after agressive using of tremolo? Does the electric guitar need locking tuners to work well with the stetsbar?
@LeonTodd
@LeonTodd Год назад
Locking tuners and a low friction nut would be advised for that. I basically have it on this guitar to cover up the aftermath of the Kahler that was on here.

"And yes this toggle switch is upside down, because I'm a moron" and I've never heard anything more relatable in my life 😂 Edit: I do like what this system changes, although for 4-500 USD it's a bit steep for my tastes. It sounds good, but the price is a lot higher than what I'd like. I think it sounds great for lower tunings and darker pickups like you suggested. I think I'd prefer a pedal, but if a guitar I wanted to buy came with these knobs and switches I think I'd be perfectly happy with it. If I bought a 500 USD preamp pedal, I think I could justify the expense, but for 500 a guitar, I don't think this preamp is for me, it's way too expensive. I'm disabled and this preamp practically costs an entire months of SSDI :( Double edit: I am a doofus and didn't realize it's in AUD, so it's more like 250 USD which is totally a fair price. I'm leaving my first edit to leave written proof that I am a doofus.
