Carl Tatz is an award winning studio designer and principal of Nashville-based Carl Tatz Designs. Carl draws his expertise as a studio designer and acoustician from over thirty years of experience as a GRAMMY-nominated engineer/producer, award-winning studio owner (Recording Arts), and two-time TEC Award nominee and one-time winner. Carl has shared his expertise through lectures and panels at Berklee College of Music, SAE, the Art Institutes, Mix Nashville, and AES events.
Now, Carl Tatz is recognized as the developer of the PhantomFocus System for monitor tuning and optimization.
The PhantomFocus System is a powerful tool in optimizing monitor systems. This system does not use any psychoacoustic DSP. Instead it concentrates first on “reach out and touch the vocalist” imaging where pinpoint detail is spread out before the listener in an almost holographic panorama. Through a combination of extremely strategic speaker/listener position calculations, proper speaker stands, damping and isolation devices, subwoofer systems, and more, full and accurate frequency response can be achieved!

We are blessed to be able to make music anywhere now, in our homes, in Hotel Rooms, everywhere!! Carl Tatz designs an amazing sounding studio to me reminiscent of the Classic Studios of Olympic where Pink Floyd made 'Dark Side of The Moon' or Abbey Road where The Beatles made so many amazing albums, or Capitol Studios, The Record Plant, The Hit Factory, all of those incredibly designed amazing rooms, well there is a guy, Carl Tatz who takes his time and makes those amazing rooms! Which studio would you like to see next? Let me know below!

It seems Mr. Tatz might be a fingerstyle guitarist, judging by his right-hand-only fingernails. I've noticed that folks that are deeply into the subtleties of acoustic instruments often have amazing ears, and minds. Kudos to him for his passion and groundbreaking combination of art, craftsmanship, and technology, and for sharing it with the world. Brilliant. Cheers

Was thinking the same thing when he was showing the amps and processors. I was like "Whoa, Carl is so into his work, he forgets basic man grooming." 😂 Then I noticed his left had had shorter fingernails.

Thank you Gentlemen both, for an amazing video and such an amazing bit of info on a studio design top to bottom, and for immediately after watching this video for 4 hours of complete tear down and re-set of my mixing space. It was the bit about the big monitor, and then of course that included building a whole new monitor stand/wall mount, and get it further back against the wall, bringing the desk out a bit too. Widening the monitor placement, measuring again to calculate the perfect sweet spot and have it hit just behind my head in the mix chair, angles, height, rebuilding the monitor stands (isoAcoustic btw..) etc.... Four hours later, and I feel like I've been PLAP'd properly! I then spent the next 5 hours listening to music, and indeed hearing little details i might have missed otherwise! Thank you Warren and Carl!!

Nice to see Warren. Seems as if Carl managed the unusual thing to do pretty damn good and “calm” rooms considering the amount of treatment. No studio will win any architectural award (well some actually has been designed well but that would be statistically uncountable.) Thank you again Carl! I guess I've been horrified lately at how many people really do not innately get physics. I feel like my life depends on it. I start to feel like, "Where can I find a sane person who at least understands the truth about physics?". So hearing this through again, it's life affirming to hear you, a person that not only gets it, but also gets it in the universal way of how it applies to everything❣️

13:33 Mary Shut the Garden Door should be a meme like ten years ago. I mean it's a song about a fleet of sentient androids taking over a small town set to deliciously dirty funk groove. I've been telling Hip Hop guys to sample that shit for years. lol
@russellszabadosaka5-pindin849
@russellszabadosaka5-pindin849 5 лет назад
Geoff Bosco: I hear you about that one. If the hip hop guys won’t listen, why not do it yourself? Sample, loop and chop it up and create a killer 2 or 3 minute “bed”, then do a one off track with someone you know? I’m not a hip hop guy, my background is metal and industrial electronics, but it never hurts to try. And these days, a big song can come from anywhere. Online buzz/viral can easily cut out a major label for a song’s distribution.

Warren, I'm Ron Flack from Canton Ohio. So thankful for this video. I reached out to Carl a few weeks ago. He graciously invited us down to visit the Blue Grotto (Another location where Carl has installed a Phantomfocus System). This was shot a year ago, but I've noticed more recently that it appears you've positioned your Focals in what looks to be in keeping with Carls Null Positioning Ensemble Is that the case? If so wondering if it's made a difference for you. Thanks for all you do. Much appreciated.

I sometimes think I have enough knowledge and experience to be (at least somewhat) productive in the studio environment but then I hear people like Carl Tatz and others featured on here and it's almost overwhelming how much is involved in this world of "ours". Used to work in Nashville. Spent a few days in- blanking on the name- multi-level behemoth studio (this was late 90s?) that Carl had designed and built entirely. I... was not impressed frankly. It looked super clean, his aesthetic has remained unchanged. But look, you build a room that is sized to an ideal as much as possible, RFZ that thing, (the ONE thing all acousticians agree upon) and then have 5 different world class studio builder take a whack at planning the rest of it. You'll get 5 different, but perfectly reasonable ideas and solutions. The real trick (that I'm sure any fully employed engineer is aware of) is getting lucky with room dimensions and spending 10,000 hours learning how the room behaves. But...well, our economy relies on people buying stuff. Including, barely, the music we make.

@MorbidManMusic I've got no problems with a blues lawyer but experience informs choice. A recording artist or engineer might make choices in a home studio because of the gear and studios they've used over their career. A wealthy enthusiast will make choices from a different perspective. For me, I like knowing why someone chooses a piece of equipment and what it means to them. It gives insight to their taste personality.

Trying to focus on Mr Tatz and what he's saying while that console is sitting there - it might as well be a beautiful naked girl . . . a little distracting, shall we say! Inspiring room. Thx Warren. So I looked through the comments . . . there is no mention of what that console actually is. Pleeze tell!

Subwoofers in the corners of the room, right next to the walls? I watched a video in which a very respected engineer (i think it was Tony Andrews from Funktion One, not sure, though) was saying that placing the subwoofers in the corner of the room is a huge mistake that only a non-professional can do.
@khronscave
@khronscave 5 лет назад
Well yeah, but these are magic mojo subwoofers which don't have that problem. [end of sarcasm] That being said, corner-loading subwoofers does indeed provide up to +9dB of low end - not necessarily uniformly, though.

@@carltatzdesign thanks for replying Carl. Can you lend any insights into the tight phase coherence between drivers, and solving the 125hz dip. Or maybe some things that differentiate the room treatment from an RFZ? Im not trying to be a jerk, acoustics is a decade long interest of mine. I understand you cant reveal all your methods. Thanks sir.
@carltatzdesign
@carltatzdesign 5 лет назад
I assume you mean the coherence between the sub system and the monitors. I can only say it's about selecting the right crossovers, points and slopes to get the phase to be as perfect as we're able to achieve with the PFS. As far as the approximate 125Hz dip, this is called the Alison Effect, named after the great Cambridge speaker designer Roy Alison in the early 70s. No one was talking about this in pro audio so I had to discover it myself and later found out that it wasn't the Tatz effect but someone else had already identified it. It's primarily due to the low frequency cancelation that occurs acoustically between the speaker on a stand and the floor - floor bounce. You'll find there are no exceptions to this. Hope this helps. BTW, a reflection-free zone design utilizes spayed walls. I design rectangular shoebox mix rooms that can be calculated mode-wise.

The system looks amazing but to ask a video microphone to pick up the actual sound in the studio is pointless exercise. The initial demo sounded boxy and then the videographer changed position and the boxiness disappeared. In the end, most people are playing the music on average sound systems. Obviously this makes a big difference for music to movies but even then the mixing technicians botch the job and you find in most Hollywood movies is that all you hear is the sound track and barely the dialogue which is usually a mumble.

Carl sounds like Albert Einstein... Certainly, having nothing between the monitors makes sense to the imaging. That I understand. Have to move some gear. I'm re-listening to get a grasp on some of Carl's other excellent studio knowledge. Looks just like my living room studio! (Not!) Never heard Warren so quiet in a studio tour before!
