My father was on various acid reflux drugs for as long as I can remember, including ranitidine. It wasn't until he was well into Alzheimer's that I wondered if he was deficient in B12, and certainly his doctor did not indicate there might be a problem with long term use of these drugs and B12 absorption. Please check with your pharmacist and your doctor regarding any drugs you are taking and their effect on nutrient absorption. Thank you for this!

I just found out myself last week that the PPI I've taken for decades is the reason I have this issue. Can I get a Gp to help or listen? Nope. Uk Gp's are notorious 4 ignoring patients who have side effects from drugs they've prescribed to patients. Zero choice, information or advice is given, and the information slip isn't in the now mainly white boxes the pharmacist gives us our medication in. It's appalling, disingenuous, and wicked. I'm willing to go the whole hog in getting help, even 2 go on tv about it. Keep a look out for me if zero help is gained 😮 😪

Oh, I thought you were going to talk about Methylated B12 and MTHFR. If you can't Methylate the B12 (turn it into a Fat solubal ) then there are over 150 chemical reactions your body can't make. I have two copies of the Worst MTHFR gene and can't methylate, which means I can't detox either. I had Toximia with all of my pregnantcys, and many many more ailmnets. Can't spell either.

I would have mentioned that the algae chlorella is one of the only non-animal foods that contain bioavailable B12, is therefore adviced for vegans or strict vegetarians. Spirulina however, contains a B12 analogue, so it's not adviced for vegans who already don't get a whole lot of B12 to begin with. For people who eat animal products, some spirulina is just fine though, since it has a lot of other great benefits.

When I was 14, I started to notice issues with my energy levels and mood. In middle school, I was honor roll, always up and ready for school and excited to go and was a music student. Then I noticed one day my hair thinning and I didn’t think much of it. Well fast forward more years and the hair kept falling out. Tons of breakage at the front top, hair looked dull, the long parts in the back hung over enough to hide it but eventually those went away to the point that now, my hair has to be combed back. I’ve dealt with depression and anxiety on a major scale throughout highschool. I’d come home and fall asleep after school. Till the night. Then I didn’t even want to do homework. I have had blood tests but no answers to stuff and anxiety and depression I was diagnosed with. I begun to have symptoms of psychosis in my life and I returned to the doctor and I had a b12 deficiency. I was sleeping some 20 hours a day at one point. No appetite. Pins and needles in feet and hands. Fatigue. Issues exercising and heart palpitations when my body would be waking me up after hikes of sleeping but I was so lethargic. I’m working on getting treatment and am working with a doctor. But it is very terrifying. This is a very serious vitamin.

I've just been diagnosed with B12 deficiency. The nurse at my clinic said my levels had dropped significantly but not dangerously low. She also said they don't want to give the injections now and recommended an oral supplement. I don't feel the supplement is sufficient after being really unwell for a year unable to exercise and just barely getting through work.

Although it is technically true that non-food or supplement sources of vitamin B12 can be absorb without "intrinsic factor" being present, such absorption is very low. Confer Wikipedia article "Intrinsic factor" subsection "Insufficiency - Treatment" which reads:: Orally administered vitamin B12 is absorbed without intrinsic factor, but at levels of less than one percent than if intrinsic factor is present.

We are so lucky in Canada that we get all such blood panels done for free so I do mine 3 times a year. When one is responsible, like myself, and donate blood throughout the year to be used/shipped anywhere is needed in the country... it is critical that B12 and iron {I use the good one Feramax or generic form} are checked often. From what I have learned from studies in college {lucky to have had profs. that were doctors ......was told if one does not receive B12 prescription that sublingual/under tongue is best way to take}. @macman6421 Год назад
Yes, you can get injectable methyl cobalamin. Unless you have pernicious anaemia, lack of intrinsic factor then you should easily be able to get your levels up quite quickly by taking cheap easily available methyl cobalamin tablets.
@lavellnutrition
@lavellnutrition Год назад
@@macman6421 What is the name of the test for pernicious anemia. I have megaloblastic red blood cells and MTFHR and Celiac Disease.
@macman6421
@macman6421 Год назад
@@lavellnutrition The test for intrinsic factor problem is "Intrinsic factor and parietal cell antibodies". I strongly recommend you get a good doctor. The MTHFR just means that you have a less efficient gene for utilising B12 but for most people this is not a problem. If I were you, I would take methyl cobalamin and folic acid. If you suspect you are low on B12 don't take folic acid on its own as this can give normal red blood cell results even if you a low on B12. The other test for B12 deficiency is Methylmalonic acid level.
@mballer
@mballer Год назад
Some people have a genetic factor also involved when converting transcobalimine 1 to transcobalimine 2, these people need an above normal blood level of b12 for proper conversion. There is also a problem with a pseudo B12 analogue from plant sources that can interfere with tests that may make it look like normal blood levels are present when in fact there isn't. This analogue is non functional. Overall B12 blood tests are only valid if a low level is shown, a normal level shown is meaningless. A methymalonic acid test should be done instead. Sufficient B12 is needed to reduce methymalonic acid levels. It is impossible for a doctor to know if someone has been eating non functional B12. Also an abundance of folic acid, (vitamin B9) can keep red blood cells their proper size and mask a B12 deficiency. Folic acid has been added to flour products by law to reduce some birth defects but it has caused the side effect of missing the diagnosis of low B12 on blood tests. The politicians forgot to add the B12 with the B9. A high methymalonic acid level can cause the breakdown of the myelin sheath around nerves and the white matter of the brain.

Metformin can actually be very effective depending on the condition. What have you seen that has concerned you? Every medication or intervention can have side effects, and so making a risk versus benefit decision with your care provider is always important. If you have specific concerns, I may be able to address this in a future video. Dear Due to the current COVID-19 situation, there are new guidelines from Haematology regarding the administration B12 Injections. The recommendation is to take B12 1000mcg/ug Oral Supplements, 1 daily. They are available to purchase from the chemist or online. When the COVID-19 situation begins to settle we will review all patients currently on B12. This is what our DRs told everyone at are clinic when the covid pandemic hit, and they haven’t restarted the B12 injections yet. Also no pneumonia injections that is way overdue. When I inquired about my B12 because of pernicious anemia they said after my blood test for my type 2 diabetes everything was ok. Well I don’t feel ok. I fall asleep up to 3 times a day while sitting in my chair. I find it strange they can give out flu jabs and covid vaccines without any bother, but not B12 or pneumonia jabs ? I’m taking 3 insulin injection a day plus metformin ( slow release)

@FriendlyPharmacy5
@FriendlyPharmacy5 Год назад
Thank you for the question. It really depends on the person and the level of deficiency. Also, what medications the person is on can have an impact. The injectable form does not need to be absorbed so this bypasses any issues with stomach absorption that can be compromised with age or with the use of certain medications or in certain disease states. Pill form is still used from time to time but again, this is very dependent on the individual case. I hope this helps, it’s a great question!
