Many years ago (mid-nineties) I worked in a factory which made various types of electronic equipment. Most of the stuff in those days, was made from leaded components that were wave soldered (PbSn) and the legs trimmed off. The dros and off-cut component wires we produced in the year would fill around twenty 200l oil drums. A recycler would come past around November and the sale of this waste would fund the rather boozy Christmas party for the +/-150 factory workers including two lamb on the spit.

I was thinking the same thing. Traditionally, the scrap bin was intended to fund the Christmas party. Bosses being -a**holes-, er bosses, that rarely happened. Good to see the copper getting scrapped, it's getting a bit hard to find in the ground these days. :)

I got quoted £300 for some armor cable - I bought a £25 machine & turned it into £1200 well worth the 8 hours !!lol told the missus it was £300 though or it would have went on shoes & bags & face filler !!

Just received my bin. On good Friday too. It's already pretty weighty with my accumulated stash, and still loads of room in it! I've had loads of SWA cable so been stripping the steel off it.

A brilliant idea. Back in the day I stripped everything down to 4mm to weigh in as bright. Stripped accessories for extra copper and brass, saved bushes, stainless steel amd anything I could weight in and can really make some extra beer tokens! I invested in a cheaper cable stripped to speed up the process but had to get shot of the PVC until I from a local chipping company!! 👍👍

Learnt how valuable scrap was at one job. 3 months and they would get about £2,000 from SS, aluminium and copper scraps. Would get the occasional visit from some fine chap in a clapped out transit to take the metal off our hands free of charge! parking a forklift in front of their fine vehicle with the forks up usually changed their mind.

I think it would be a good idea for them to demonstrate their balance is accurate/calibrated in front of you. Something like a standard 5L water bottle should read pretty close to 5kg for example. I'm not suggesting for a second there are any issues it would just be a good gesture of transparency to have something.

The guy I used to use and the scrapyard itself don't offer any kind of test measure. Besides, the only way to be sure would be to arrange for your own weight or measure that you know to be accurate. Personally, I just want the stuff gone when it needs to go with as little faff as possible which is why I let the last guy walk off with my water cylinder. It was the fact he blagged me about it having no worth like I'm some kind of fool which is why he's not getting business from me anymore.

If they’re using the scales for trade I’m pretty sure it has to be verified and stamped to trading standards tolerances, which are much tighter than normal domestic scales.

Thanks Craig, we'll bear this in mind. We do calibrate the scales at the start of each day and invite customers to double check them if they wish (one customer even had his daughter stand on them before weighing in almost 300kg of Bright Wire 😆)

Good stuff Dave! On the Rode mic setup (from PC or phone) you can have the mic save a "safety" channel which is recorded at a few dB lower. Happy New Year!

Unfortunately not as the value isn't there to make the visit worthwhile. Best thing to do is chuck the PVC in a standard council issued recycling bin.

Let me re phase that. If I strip the cable to its component parts. Bright wire copper and waste pvc plastic. Would you take both parts or only the higher valve bright copper?

@@charliechan22 Ah understood! Typically customers will just put their waste PVC (and steel) into their council issued recycling bin at home. However if this was something you couldn’t do then we’d endeavour to take it away for you. We always try to be flexible to accommodate customer’s needs.

Before all these engineer joists came along and plumbers notched copper pipe in the top of joists they used to collect up all their off cuts for weighing in at Christmas. Would you not get a better rate at your local scrap yard?

Cutting out the middleman and going straight to the scrappy would yield a better rate I expect, but it's an hour's round trip so whatever extra I'm making is just going into my time and diesel. Also, having the wheelie bin supplied is handy for storage. Before Greencable, I was considering buying my own wheelie bin just for somewhere to stash the stuff otherwise it piles up everywhere.

As a guide, we've been advised that local scrap yards are paying anything from £1.40/kg to £2.00/kg for Household Cable. The average wheelie bin full of Household Cable accommodates around 80kg. So we'll pay around £140 collected and the best paying yards might pay £160 if you take it into them. Then you take into account the hassle of loading up the van, travelling to the yard, queuing, picking up a puncture for good measure...

Indeed - What is more valuable, your time or an extra £20? I used to "save" money by doing my home diy (like painting and decorating and bathroom and kitchen fitting) but then realised that the modest money I saved doing it myself was way less than the money i lost taking a day or two off work to do the job! Plus, I also realised that I hate painting and decorating and plastering etc. lol Lucky I love electrics ;-) @@GreencableTeam

No, there's no charge for the bin which is why I felt a little guilty about having sat on it for so long after I initially filled it.

@@dsesuk No need to feel guilty! It was a great collection, and something we emphasise to customers is that we'd rather visit infrequently for hefty loads instead of frequently for tiny loads. Minutes + Miles = Cost, so the less we need to do to get to customers the better.

I don’t know what your signal chain or workflow is; but once I’ve edited my iMovie project, I’ll bounce out the audio for eq/limiting in cubase (audacity can be used instead) and then import, switching out the original for processed audio.

This one's been through Audacity Stevie, but the basic issue is that if it's borked at source then filters will only get you so far. Well, that and I don't really know what I'm doing! Anyway, I have an external audio recorder I'm going to start using as that will allow me to monitor levels which my crappy camera doesn't.

Top end was cutting out which was grating to listen to. It's been run through a couple of filters to tidy it up at the expense of some lip-sync. Bloody amateur nonsense.

Any one selling or buying BT cable is at risk of prosecution. Spent a day with the British Transport Police on scrapyard raids, one of the outcomes of what we found was the introduction of cashless transactions.
