Welcome to the eight part of the Ph.D Admissions Series! Usually, the first concerns people have when it comes to applying to graduate school is about their GPA, GRE scores, and publication record. We address each of these aspects and how important they are to the application.
As we mention in the video, these are our thoughts from a MOL/CELL BIO perspective. We have never been on an admissions committee and can't speak to admissions in other fields.

In my foundation year (which is counted in my GPA) i got a C+ in math, however, right now I’m an A student on mathematical courses. The reason why i got a c is because in the first 10 minutes of the final exam, which was 40% of the whole course grade, an instructor make a ruckus on how a student was cheating, and was screaming loudly and swearing that there will be consequences... as a person with anxiety, this made me so anxious and nervous to the point where i forgot how to solve several formulas, and went from being an A student to a C student. Will Harvard ever consider prep year scores? If so, should i mention it in the sop? I’m afraid if i do mention it, maybe its going to reflect some weaknesses that are better kept untold (anxiety)

Thank you for your question - this is an important one. In my opinion, there is still a lot of stigma when it comes to mental health issues so it isn't something I'd mention. Instead, make sure your recommenders mention that that grade isn't reflective of you as a student or your research potential. If it is just one grade, I don't think it'll throw your application out or anything (that being said, I can't speak to other fields. I only know my own, biology)

So, I have 3 years of undergraduate research and a summer spent at an REU, graduated from my school's Honors program, but have poor gre and gpa scores( 80th for reading and writing and 30th for math, and a 3.44 overall gpa). I've been involved in a ton of science extracurricular activities and was even President of my school's Chi Beta Phi chapter. I've already been rejected from two programs out of the 11 I've applied to. I addressed my circumstances that caused me to have a few bad marks, but I'm worried about my prospects. I have just been super stressed out about all of this... I can't help but feel like I'm lacking... Anyone else dealing with this?

Hey Lillian! Thanks a tonne for providing such valuable insights. You'd mentioned in the video about some universities being more GPA/GRE centric than others. Is there a method to find university's priorities if they haven't mentioned them explicitly?
@lillianinequilibrium
@lillianinequilibrium 4 года назад
Hi Mukund, thank you for your support! I'd say the only real way to find out is by calling the admissions department and asking them directly. Different programs at different universities have different focuses.

I am a political science student and will be applying for PhD this year. I have been reading up on GRE requirements for admission in ivy leagues and though they say that GRE scores are not that important and they focus more on academia and other factors such as experience, the students who are admitted have scores above 320 out of 340. This was written on the website of an ivy league. So clearly, they do want exceptional GRE scores even if it's a social science course.

320/340 is hardly exceptional

@@1245aryan It IS for Political Science. For STEM courses, no it's not.

Are you guys familiar with doing a PhD in Sweden? I was recently invited for an interview for a PhD position in a university in Sweden and it is about four weeks now I have not heard from them. Do you have any word of advice for me?

I'm not familiar with the system in Sweden, apologies. I would ask the department if decisions have been made yet.

Hey, I am the first author of an International Journal with 5.4 impact factor which is also a HOT paper and another paper as first author with IF 5. CGPA is 3.5 in my Master's project. Please tell me which top universities I can land into for PhD?
@lillianinequilibrium
@lillianinequilibrium 3 года назад
Hi Vidya, This is really dependent on the field. But also I encourage you not to think about research in terms of universities but in terms of departments. If your papers are trending though then it won't hurt to apply to top programs in your field.

At the time of application I'll be working towards my honours but obviously will be yet to complete it. How would I mention this? Also does doing a less than normal course load (4 courses instead of 5 per semester) look bad?
@lillianinequilibrium
@lillianinequilibrium 4 года назад
You (or a reference) can mention that you are on track to get honors - that is what I did to mention I was writing my thesis that wouldn't be finished until after I applied. And I am not sure how admissions committees view less than normal course load, but I don't imagine it is that big of a priority for them.

umm how is assessing someone on pubs not fair? makes my head spin when Americans, living in the wealthiest and most privileged society in the world talk about not having opportunities, you have opportunities Kyle, you just need to E-mail that prof at UCLA, apply to that grant with a 20% acceptance rate that you call cOmPeTeTiVe and take an overnight train to their university before you start working. While someone from Asia or Africa doesn't even have that option because most probably there just aren't people doing that specific research in their country. And no, 3rd 4th 5th whatever author papers still require you to put your foot in the door and get involved, if I, a lower middle class cunt from a small Indian town can furiously reach out to people for opportunities, work with whatever I come by and still have 4 decent IF publications in my senior year so can literally anyone else and it won't be unfair to judge people's profile over it.
