Hey Chu, great video! I’m very interested in pursuing PhD studies in Sweden, question: is it always possible to end the studies half-way and obtain a Lic.-degree? I’m concerned that if decide to not finish the 4-5 year-long complete process, I’d be leaving it empty handed. Thanks in advance for the guidance. Cheers!

Amazing and very helpful video. I just wanted to ask a question, in your opinion, is it true that most if the researchers with phd projects/positions available would pick most of the times somebody they already know from within the university rather than someone from the pool of applicants?

Thank you! I used keynote. I think I found a template somewhere and then adjusted it to save some time. I wanted to give you the link but sorry I couldn't find it again. But in principle you draw a bunch of circles and lines and use "Anime" function in keynote to make them appear the way you want, the order you want and durations you want. Powerpoint works similarly as well. More videos about PhD under preparation :)

Thanks for the information. I would like to know it the research topic is given by the school or the applicant has to have his own research topic and proposal?

Thank you so much for this video! I'm trying to apply for a Ph.D. position at KI, and I submitted my documents online about 18 days ago. But I have not gotten any email from the administrator yet. So could you please tell me how long it would take to receive an interview invitation or rejection letter?

Thank you for this incredible video! You said that you also studied your master degree in Sweden, I was wondering could you give some advice on Master Application as well? I'm studying Biomedicine in UCL and I'm now in year 2 thinking about applying for KI's Master Degree. However, because of COVID and a lot of other reasons, I cannot get a summer lab placement in my second year. And I'm very afraid that it's going to be very hard for me to apply a Master degree in Karolinska Institute as well.
@ChuChallenge
@ChuChallenge 2 года назад
Hmmm I can understand your concern, there are many things suspended during COVID times. At the same time, people tend to be understanding as well since it is a universal problem. Don’t be too stressed about it. I think it is an important quality in academia to try to do the best possible under problematic situations, so if you tried to do something else (taking an online course for example)when getting a lab replacement didn’t work out, that would be a big plus. I will prepare a video about master as well 😊though it’s been some years things may have been updated. In short, there was cv, personal letter and letter of recommendation (this may be optional depends on the problem), there’s no interview so writing is very important. I have a friend who got into master of biomedicine at KI this year, if you send me an email I can try to connect you guys. All the best luck for your study and application 😊

Hi, I applied for a biomed master at Karolinska last year and the only thing missing from my application was the lab experience (also because of corona). I got waitlisted (was 16th on the list) and didn't get in and I really think it was because of the lab thing. Otherwise I think I was a quite good candidate with high grades, tons of extracurriculars and lots of internationally-oriented stuff. (On the other hand I'm coming to Karolinska soon for an internship that will count for 1/3rd of my master degree at a different uni, so there is at least that)

Thank you for your helpful information. as you mentioned that your study is not full time due to your current employment, does it mean you will receive double salary as student at KI and employee?
@ChuChallenge
@ChuChallenge 2 года назад
Glad you enjoyed the video :) no, I do 80% PhD and 20% work, so in the end I am still receiving a 100% salary. And therefore my PhD is 5 years instead of 4 (which is the case of a 100% PhD).

Hi, great information dear. I am asri, and i'd like to appy for Ph.D in KI this year. As you said that Ph.D students in KI will be paid, so is it possible for me if i dont take any schoolarship from my country to support this study? And, about green light. I actually sent an email to one of professor in TMC lab in KI. I have an interested to join his team, but unfortunatelly no adv about his doctoral program in KI website. Do i need to ask him about the avaibility to be a phd student in his lab? And ask him too about the possibility to him to apply the green light? Tell me more about this. Thank you dear

Hello, this is incredible, I've been looking for this kind video because I want to pursue PhD in Sweden. How do I apply PhD in Sweden if my master is from another country? Would it be possible?
@ChuChallenge
@ChuChallenge 2 года назад
You can absolutely apply with master from outside Sweden. won't be too different from applying within Sweden. Information will be online and you can apply for it like a normal job. If you find any group or researcher that you are interested in, contact them and see if there's anything. Funding is scarce so there may not be phd opportunity right away, but if you work as a research assistant (and it's possible to do it remotely now as well) with a group it definitely increases the chance of you getting a position. Good luck!

It is not easy to find a Phd position that fits to my research area and interest. . Most of the people say like go to web site, and apply the phd vacancies. It is not that easy. Because that particular phd position might not fit into you or interest. How can we apply independently as a research assistant ? can we apply for it if we just have a Master's degree ?

Hey hi you mentioned you did your masters in Sweden as well...so was it easier for you to get into a PhD program being an internal student? Am doing my masters in Universität Regensburg, Germany in Mathematics. I am an Indian ( My Bachelor’s is from India ) , I want to get a Phd in Sweden. Will it be tough for me because I already don't have much connections in Sweden? Can you explain the importance of grades for getting into a funded PhD position? Do we really need stellar grades so to speak ? And can we get PhD in Sweden through cold emails individually to the professors ( like I have heard for other EU countries)? Thank you, please do reply !
@ChuChallenge
@ChuChallenge 2 года назад
Yes I did my master in Sweden but my master university is university of Uppsala and my PhD is at Karolinska institutet so I am not technically an internal student. But of course being in Sweden helps to know the system, learn the language (which is not necessary at all in academia, people speak real good english and programmes are all in english, but helps if you want a job outside academia or combine some other work and PhD) and build contacts. I would think it is easier to build connections while in Sweden but hey Germany is not at all that far, why not come on an exchange? And the academic environment in Sweden is very international, people here welcome competence from abroad and collaboration is valued in research. PhD is considered a job here so you will definitely get paid, there is no unfunded PhD position here. Please believe that you are more than your grades, and there are things that are much more important than grades. For example if you have a paper published that would speak 100 times louder than getting an A in scientific writing. But if you have nothing else to show the evaluators, then they will only have your grades to evaluate you on. And yes cold email works! But you perhaps need to put work into researching people you are emailing to, your cover letter and CV. Perhaps also need some persistence and luck! Hope it helps and good luck !

hello I am from India, I am doing my PhD now in commerce, I want to study directly PhD in tourism at Sweden, if it possible ? someone says that if do one year master degree in tourism and after completing that study then apply and ready in PhD there. is it good option?
@ChuChallenge
@ChuChallenge 2 года назад
I don't know and I suggest you to send an email to the university or the research group you want to do your phd in and ask about this. Since you are already doing a PhD, you must be academically qualified but I am not sure how it works between two fields of commerce and tourism. Doing a master first is an option, I mean you get to know the country, the culture and you have chance to get to know the group you want to work with, phd is quite long so knowing the group will give you more chance of getting a phd and also good for you to sort of know what you are signing yourself up to for the next 4 years. I don't recommend a one-year master though, because you don't get a personal number, life will be a bit hard, you can't even open bank account or join a gym without personal number. But I can see in your case, you may not want to spend another two years in a master. Just so you know about the cons of a one year master when you make decisions. Good luck!

Hello wonderful video! Just one question if possible? Which is the first year's salary per month, after tax?
@ChuChallenge
@ChuChallenge 2 года назад
The salary is different for each university and the tax rate is different depends on where you live. So I can't give you anything very exact. but it would be around 28000 SEK with around 30% tax in general, so you will get around 20000 SEK per month after tax.
