Wow- your thesis sounds incredible- I've never thought of the ecological significance of the stereotypes you mention but on a gut level, it makes easy sense. Good luck with your ideas, writing, research and most importantly, dissemination of the knowledge you are unearthing and creating!

Hi Ren, Great vlog, I'm really impressed by your work keeping in mind it's your first vlog on RU-vid. Wonderful. As you're a predoctoral student of racism against African Americans, I think you're competent to answer a question that raised in my mind while watching the snippet from the cartoon where people are harvesting or picking cotton from fields. Is it still racism if we depict or show something (Not in a derogatory way), that had actually happened in past ? And if so then how can we depict something while not being racist, something that had happened in past. Thanks.
Hi Malik, Thanks so much for your message and kind words! Wonderful question. The use of derogatory images can be utilised positively for teaching purposes or to simply explore a history, however the examples I've described in the film repeat and perpetuate negative and harmful stereotypes without addressing the harm they inflict or even recognising that they're harmful/racist. In answer to your question, yes! it is possible to demonstrate historic phenomenons/events without reinforcing racist rhetoric, lots of Black writers have demonstrated this in poetry and novels, and many artists in artwork. It takes sensitivity, understanding your audience, necessary context provided (doesn't always have to be written context, it can visual). Actually that's the very purpose of the Jim Crow Museum. The most important question you have to ask yourself is "how would those being represented respond to the ways I've represented their histories" (they will either feel offended/degraded or they'll feel seen and understood).
