Hi every one last week Phebe had her sparkplugs cleaned
although the was not that bad i think she running a little lean .
so today have made a small adjustment to the mixture .

Hi can you tell me how low you can get this to tick over? Once you lower the idle slowly until the engine dies, the raise the idle a tiny bit so it ticks over really slowly then alter the mixture screw (up or down ) until the revs pick up a little. Then see if you can get the idle lower until it conks out. Then repeat the process. Once you have got it running as slow as possible, this should be the optimum mixture. This also applies to engine timing, which can be done while the engine is running if yo slacken the pinch bolt on the distributor. Keep adjusting the timing until you can get it running as slow as possible. Fist make sure the points gap id correct, but if you have electronic ignition you can adjust the timing until it idles as slow as possible, Make sure you only retard the ignition little and not advance it. Turning the distributer in the same direction as the spin of the rotor arm retards and against the spin of the rotor rm advances. Slightly more retarded then the user manual should allow for the lack of lead in unleaded fuel, but advancing it would overheat your valves and burn them out. Let me know how you get on

Just been adjusting the carb on my 1975 mini with a HS4 carb similar to this. The only thing i cant get it to do is increase the revs with the lift pin? just wants to die. I adjusted the nut a few flats in, then a few flats out til it stabilised. It seems nice though though my plugs have a white/tan electrode and a darkish ring round the outside. Seems fine though. It has a 998 metro engine with a crunchy 2nd haha. But a lovely car nontheless i use every day, great videos.

Thanks for that vid. So tell me, when you depress the pin to test the carb setting for the revs to raise and lower, do you hold the pin up or just momentarily push it up then let go? Thanks

Just lift and hold for a few seconds you will know immediately if it alter the revs it should drop back to normal after a second. You may not need to push it all the way in just enough to move the butterfly a little some people use a small screwdriver and move the the butterfly just a fraction. Good luck 🤓👍

Because these carbs run on vacuum I think it's a mistake to make mixture adjustments without the air filter on. What's a perfect mixture without the filter becomes a rich mixture with it on. Three Minors, a TR3, a TR4, and a whole bunch of chainsaws, motorcycles, weed wackers under my sway would agree.

i am noticing my plugs are black when removed,the fuel mix is clearly rich.im looking to purchase a gunson colourtune,but they look to be quite pricey and hard to pick up. whats your thoughts .

@@soledweller hi I have heard people saying that they are good but I have never used one so don't know. I would ajust the carburettor a little bit at a time and drive for a bit then check. You might have to do it a few times. Good luck with sorting it out. 🤓👍

@@soledweller inward rightly tighty to give less fuel outwards undo will increase the fuel. In no expert but that's what I do. 🤓👍
