Thorpe is probably my favorite swimmer of all time and this is a great race, but I always thought it was slightly unfair to Phelps to call this "the race of the century". Phelps was far more versatile than either Thorpe or PVDH, who were both solely freestylists. Phelps' best events were probably the two IMs and the 200 fly. Phelps was a great 200 freestylist, but it was not his speciality. Phelps would have handily beaten either of these other men in any non-freestyle event. Also, this is still very early in Phelps' career, he was only 18 here and hit his peak years later in 2007 and 2008. Meanwhile, Thorpe was just coming down off his 2000-2001 peak and PVDH was basically at his peak. Also, to be fair to PVDH he was better at the 100 free than the 200 free. So this is Thorpe near his peak in one of his best events (probably second only to the 400 free) swimming against two swimmers in a slightly off event for them.

@@analcommando1124 Michael Phelps was only 15, even though he was just a baby when he competed at his first Olympics, he came in 5th in the 200-meter butterfly. Next year in 2021 at the World Championship Trials on March 30, Phelps broke the world record in the same event, at 15 years and 9 months, he became the youngest male ever to set a world record in swimming, Previously the youngest male had been Ian Thorpe, who captured the 400-meter freestyle world record at 16 years and 10 months. 4 month later at the World Championships in Fukuoka, Japan, Phelps broke his own world record while in route to become a world champion for the first time.

@@jcgpisces579 I know all that. Remember Thorpe was only 17 in 2000 in his hometown Olympics. Talk about pressure. Anyway, I'd argue Phelps was better in 2004 than 2008. No super suits, much much much much tougher field in the 200m free in 2004 compared to all the chumps in 2008 besides Park. And you can't blame Phelps for the 4x100m freestyle being mediocre.

@@jcgpisces579 Anal Commando was right Phelps was 19 in this Olympics and 15 in the prior Olympics. Maybe your confusing Anal Commando with Ferdinand above who got his age wrong. But the rest of what you said was a good read. Helps me understand why Thorpe came and went real fast in the sport. He probably lost that fire after seeing someone as young as Phelps break his records. Had a friend in the Air Force who was a really fast long distance runner, though I was slower I could run for much longer. One day at a 5k race he got beat for the first time on our Air Force base and he never ran one of those races again. He couldn't take it being in second place. I'm thinking this might be the same that happened to Thorpe. I could be wrong though. This was around the same time these two swimmers were competing at a very young age.

To explain why Thorpe could glide effortlessly above the water , we need to have a look at his special training in the mini pool that was unique at that time . He was the first in the world to implement that kind of training . It was all about measuring the water flow around the body . Add to this his slim body , his height ,and his legs . He had a very unique leg movement in the free-style that slides the water from the dead zone which is at the end of the back towards the end of the body generating the perfect wave that helps a lot to keep the whole body gliding with no water resistance at all . This is the key for his free-style success (A very unique leg movement) . Adding to this that he had the longest arm stroke in history . All of that made him the unbeatable killer shark in water . In my opinion he's the swimming icon af all times .

Pity Thorpe retired at such a young age (we all know why), it would have been amazing to see the rivalry go on for another couple of Olympic games, especially against Phelps. In reality, Thorpe's suit was no more beneficial than the long-legged versions of everyone else, but it's a shame really, because without understanding this nuance (buoyant vs non-buoyant) the focus is on the wrong thing (the suit, not the amazing swimming) and unfairly detracts from the perception of the performance
