Phil Hellmuth doesn't give out compliments often but he gushed over this fold that some are calling one of the best cash game poker plays of all time. This hand between ‪@ConsciousPoker‬ and Chad Holloway is an instant classic.
Good luck to Alec Torelli as he enters #day8 of the #wsop2023 #mainevent!

No flush draw on board, so the raise isn't a flush draw/combo draw semi-bluff. Straight draw will call, not raise. The only raising hands are bluffs and made hands that are either (a) way ahead of 99 or (b) not paying off on paired boards. Raise is very unlikely to be a bluff ... this spot is way underbluffed. Reverse implied odds are horrible with bottom set.

What do you make of J 10s or 10 9s? Holloway was the guy calling the action. Assuming he plays like suited connectors that make two pair on the flop. Isn't that both a raise to protect against giving the re-raiser draws on like QQ, KK, AQs, AKs, 88 or 77 while also gaining a lot more information by raising whether he's possibly running into a flopped set (or Torelli playing like KQ?)? Information that could save him money on the turn and river, also a raise that could win him the pot right on the flop, a raise that could win him more money in case he hits a full house (or has runner-runner to a flush with SUITED connectors) and a reasonable wager in order to gain all that information in case he gets re-raised on the flop and has to fold? Apart from traditional/rather cautious play, there's also the chance of getting called by AJ, top pair with a straight draw so any blank 2-6 also helps him, especially if it's the same suit as the one he holds. Assuming the most likely scenario, a fold from at least Deeb, Holloway also buys himself position for turn and river play with the raise. Back to Torelli: first I want to consider pre-flop action. You talked about made hands that are way ahead of his. That would only be JJ, 10 10 (both highly unlikely given preflop play), Q8 (a bit unlikely to call both the raise and the re-raise), 8 7 and KQ. KQ is the only hand here that is both realistic and way ahead of 9 9 once we factor in pre-flop action. 8 7 is possible but unlikely. And even against K Q, Torelli got 7 outs plus runner-runner to full house left. I think a flat call and pot control on turn and river also makes sense. The second to last big factor in determining whether to call or fold here is the opponent for me. If it's a tight-aggressive player, I'm definitely leaning fold. Against loose-aggressive, I'm 99% ruling out a bluff into two pre-flop raisers out of position on this board. Against loose-aggressive, I'd assume a medium-strong starting hand that turned into a made hand on the flop as the most likely scenario. That range includes K Q and 8 7. But it also includes Q J, J 10, 10 9, K J if it's a loose-aggressive player. I gotta ask myself here whether I'm willing to possibly risk a lot of chips on turn and river - but I would evaluate the situation as likely being ahead on the flop, with lots of potentially dangerous cards on the river. Anything from K to 8 are scare cards for me here. 2-7 and A are not against a loose-aggressive player (ain't just calling AJ or AQ pre-flop and ain't raising A8, A9 or A10 on the flop against two guys who raised pre-flop). Odds are better than 50/50 to hit a good turn and river in which case it's check-call/pot control for me. What's more, runner-runner with a 'blank' (22,33,44,55,66) is check-call on the turn and then a value bet on the river or a check-raise/check-check - for a huge payday against the ENTIRE realistic range. Even if the opponent folds against the value bet or it's check-check, I'm good. 7 on the turn is a bit problematic but I wouldn't be too scared of it. While a loose player could have 10 8s or J 8s or 8 8 in his range, that's extremely loose/nuts to raise on the flop, I wouldn't believe it. 7-7 runner-runner is another great outcome. 7-8 on turn and river would be problematic and one of the few hands that costs me more than just the call on the flop. But short: I'm leaning call and pot control/seeing what cards hit on turn and river vs a loose-aggressive player. It gets trickier vs players who are capable of anything/mix up style of play a lot. The final factor: my own image at the table. How likely is it that the opponent confronts my aggressive play with a more aggressive one? What happened before? Was he strong in those situations or not? Did I punish him for being too aggressive? Did I re-raise? Did he fold to it, call, shove? Probably a very minor factor in this situation as the players seem to be pretty deep in stacks/early in the tournament.

The issue is not 99 bet the flop, why KQ raised? You have pure nuts, why not just flat, the next guy may have AA going nuts All in. You may need to take a little more risk to make them fire 2nd shell, then you JAM the board, Also 99 could check the flop, control the pot. Because 99 has lots of outs to hit boat.
@JoseSantana-pq3uc
@JoseSantana-pq3uc Год назад
The answer to this one is actually quite simple. King queen raised because he knew that to really had a strong hand especially if you're leading out first to act. You have to think king queen doesn't want to worry about the board pairing and then be put in a bad spot

Astute laydown Alec, but why not "roll the dice" and see if you can obtain a full house on next card or maybe bluff possibilities if a flush draw possibility arises. Agreed its speculating but you would have stacked him likely with right turn card. Just asking and possibly you had a read or contextual issues arose. Perhaps, to celebrate this momentous adulation from a WSOP "legend", make a t-shirt that says: "..OOOOnnnnnly 5 people, Alex T., on the planet would have made that slick move, Bravoooooo". Phil "HellMouth" aka Hellmuth has spoken!!!!!!!

Because his opponent may have had 10-J and his 9’s full would have lost. The point is he knew the only hand that he beats that raises there (possibly raises) is 10-J. Good lay down.
