Here is the kind of man Phil Is...I am disabled, and I started playing poker at 50. I won a tourny online to travel and meet Phil. Unfortunately my disability doesn't allow me to travel. I wrote him a note saying I wish I could come meet him, but I could''t, he wrote me a letter saying thanks for writing, and he sent me a couple of his books signed and other material. The are some of my most prized possessions. Not many would take the time as he did...so what you see on TV is not the man I know...

Disagree, Hellmuth is very egotistical. was like that in the 90's as well as 2000, 2003, 2008 on and on and on. Yes he is a top tournament poker player but Hellmuth knows exactly who he is and won't hesitate to tell you at the poker table. If he thinks your an amateur poker player..... look out he uses his phrases to belittle you and put you in a lower category. All those blows and poor mannered antics when he gets beat (And not even a bad beat) , those idiot blow ups are for real. When he becomes critical and throws his tantrums those are real. And that is really the Phil Hellmuth to know.

Regarding what Phil says at 1:45:00, completely agree. This is very easy to implement, and I'm a bit shocked why it's not already done. In chess, each player gets a fixed maximum total amount of time for a certain amount of moves. If the game goes longer than that many moves, a pre-set extra amount of time is given for the next batch of moves. This concept can easily be used in poker. Each player can start with a fixed pre-set amount of total time for every 20 hands or so. That way, he can budget when to use more or less of that time for the specific hands he plays.

White Magic! Great interview Doug. I like the pivot in the type of video. Great career move. Super interesting content that is presented in conversation. I gained a lot more respect for Hellmuth. He was very honest. His story about Black Friday and relationship with Ultimate Bet was intriguing. I will definitely buy his book now. When you and Phil start talking about Poker Stars and Ultimate Bet... The conversations get a little touchy but it was very great content and great, honest, conversation. You navigated the conversation well. Hellmuth knows Polk has some good points, and Hellmuth isn't open to the idea of being wrong. Hellmuth's defense wasn't logical and often used fallacies to defend valid points. Polk did a great job transitioning the conversation when things got a little touchy. Mad respect for Hellmuth and Negreau. Doung Polk will play a significant role in the future of poker.Polker Hands 2020! P.S. The goal should be to get 1,000 true fans. I'm a true fan. Great job.

Phil gives away a ton of great insight here. When I was playing pro, friends would ask me about going pro themselves, and want to know things like hand and table strategies, or how long each day they need to study, but I'd always come back with, you're probably better at the game than I am, but the difference is I've never lost above a certain amount at the table, EVER, I don't chase losses, I manage my roll super strictly, I don't get drunk or take drugs while I play, I never go on a heater and decide to jump up 3 levels on a lark, I don't tilt, I don't just take stabs at games I'm not familiar with for big stakes, I exercise a lot... all this stuff is what allowed me to play for a living, not hand ranges and check-raise frequencies. And on a side note, the number one reason I gave up playing full time was the regular game I had broke up coz certain awesome players couldn't help themselves from demolishing the whales week after week, which of course, made it no longer fun for them. Enjoying the game, and being an enjoyable person at the table is a big part of keeping yourself motivated.

Awesome interview Doug. I love Phil Hellmuth and he is the reason I started playing poker more often when the explosion happened. Had always played poker but learned how to play Hold EM' reading his book and looking forward to grabbing Poker Brat and enjoying the stories!

Do you guys think there could be a tournament time bank that you take from? Instead of a 30 second per hand clock, have a 30 minute to an hour of time you can use over the whole tournament, and maybe add 15 sec to your clock if you make a decision within 10 seconds.

The PHelmuth interview was the absolute BEST anyone has ever done with him (that I've seen) and, once you got past his massive ego, he revealed himself as a man fully understanding and thankful for his fortune in life and not solely what his "Poker Brat" rep suggests. Excellent job.

Wow - what an INTERESTING nugget there on Phil's entry into the game. Came with 12k, enough for two tourneys, blew most on cash games, survived the 1k with just enough to get out of Vegas if he went busto. And at THAT turning point... On a heads up the next day he comes out with 60k. If I recall Polk also started with heads up, I think I remember that in one of his videos. Very neat to see the beginnings. I agree with Hellmuth, Polk brings the game alive for many people, and even with a fit here or there, Hellmuth does too, even the fits bring attention to the game. But my understanding is Hellmuth gave away all but one (lost it somewhere in the house) of his WSOP bracelets - he mentions he's brought in SIXTY MILLION for charities... Indeed- that's a TRUE WIN there.

43:20 "I was DEUCES MAN - I was like... THIS far away from leaving town" What a powerful expression. I just looked up what a euphemism is, it's an abstract reference to represent something so bad - it's best disguised. 'I was dueces man' is my new euphemism ! or heh- simple 'dueces man' ! Anytime I'm up against a wall, uh oh- that's a euphemism ! lol but I'm going to use 'deuces man'. This is my favorite Doug Polk video so far and I'm not even 1/2 way through it yet :)

He is so David Brent. Shows off about people he knows, shows off about how much money he makes, shows off how much money he gives to charity. Goes on about how “inspirational he is”. He seems almost a characterture of himself. Can’t make a comment without “subtly” dropping in how great he is.

Phil is so right about the younger generation not knowing that charming the fish is the lost art of the hustle. That was 100% a prerequisite to making good money as a cash grinder back in the day. I wish people would learn to be more fun at the games because the longer the game goes, the more we all make.

Phil really hits the nail on the head with " We need Corporate money in Poker".. i never fault anyone for getting a big sponsor, or advertising deal, etc.. if its good for a top poker player, it rubs off on the rest of us and shows up in bigger prize pools ( guaranteed ).. Phil being humble is almost euphoric.. a whole new side of him...
