Just wanted to say, when Phil came back for us in that one game vs Wolves, it was unbelievable. He put every player on that pitch to shame. It’s sad but I know every United fan was glad to see him get his chance even if it was one last time.
As a United fan I always liked Phil . No one gave more to the team , when he did play his commitment was never in doubt . United fans were always behind Phil . The lad gave everything .
Phil represented United and England with the courage, determination and fight that us fans expect but don’t get from every player. Whilst not everything goes exactly as we hope in life, my word Phil you did yourself, family and club proud. So happy we got the chance to see you play in a red shirt.
i honestly think phils last return to the team was where i was most impressed with his performances. he was a rock for those few games he came back for.
He was the best player on the pitch during his last game for us. The fact that it was just after almost another year of absence makes it even more impressive.
@amberleaf42069 Yes...he wasn't work shy ...just unlucky with injuries. He would give his " all" for this club...heart and soul . It's a shame egos along with wage packets have corroded the game nowdays..this ' downing tools and throwing the manager under the bus should be a recognized crime against their contract they sign. Suspension of wages for lengthy periods and donation to worthy charities on the receiving end
Phil was a really good player who in true United style was offered a big contract when all wasn’t well and the gamble failed badly. No reflection on Phil though.
When you earn hundreds of thousands per week in salaries you have no rights to talk about anything, especially when you do not perform well on the pitch
@@Ladioz exactly he isn't some victim. Injuries must be difficult to deal with mentally and physically but he's also very privileged. Earned millions playing or not.
@@retroshane8844so, because he earns a lot of money he cant talk about his problems? Everyone has issues they should talk about, he isn't an android. Jesus
@@Ladiozbullshit. Your human at the end of the day put yourself in that position everything is not just about money maybe for you it is but majority of the world is human.
As a United fan I've never really heard Phil Speak like this over the years. He's honestly an inspiration to overcome those mental problems he had due to the knee Injury. Comes across as a Really mentally strong and nice guy. I remember his last competitive game for united when he played the full 90 mins after not playing for a year, he gave absolutely everything for the team in that game!
Phil speaks with such incredible dignity. He's absolutely World class, an inspiration to young and old alike, and he demonstrates what resilience and commitment to the cause actually is.
what really moved me when he played last was how moved to tears he was when the fans chanted his name. He really cared unlike a few others who have been on top wages
Anyone else find it incredibly frustrating when you have a guest like this and neither host actually asks a follow up question? For example Phil might have said I had to bite my lip” neither presenter decide to say can you give an example? They just continue with new questions and no real deep conversation gets going in my opinion.
Jones made 229 appearances for United during his stay at Old Trafford. He won five major trophies, including a Premier League title, an FA Cup, a Europa League title and two FA Community Shields, regardless of injuries people should show respect. In the words of Mike Tyson “Social media made you all way too comfortable with disrespecting people and not getting punched in the face for it.”
Awesome interview there. I remember watching you playing for Blackburn against Chelsea. You were 18 at the time and under Sam Allardyce. I knew you were destined to play for Man Utd. You were so brave in that game, dealing with John Terry that day. Well done Phil.
These are like the pro wrestlers shoot interviews. I think these guys don’t need to be ashamed or embarrassed about the sacrifices they made from kids to become a professional footballer. We need to hear more stories like this to help people who are in need. 🙏🏼
Nice humble bloke who has the same issues as the rest of us. I can certainly relate to those reactions to mental issues, it can close doors to opportunities, relationships and life in general without knowing and I'm a nobody without the spotlight so well done for what you achieved mate, good to hear your honesty.
this interview was great. it’s not just a win for mental health within the game, but for all men who struggle silently too. thank you for sharing your story and being vulnerable with us phil !
There is also another context. Not all people are honest and not all people are hardworking. All footballers who don't perform come out eventually and speak like Phil does here... But statistically that cannot be the truth for all of them. People are different. Some are lazy, some are arrogant, some are liars, some are cheaters and some suffer. Why do we believe them and sob for them as soon as they open their mouths?? He could have retired years ago and stopped taking money without working for it. He took the money which comes from the fans and now complains about said fans.
@@ThatGuy-tx4vm Name one player who retired in the middle of their top flight contract. Blame United for giving him a ludicrous one. Not him for taking it.
@@ThatGuy-tx4vmonly a United fan would be entitled enough to think a player should give up on their contractually obligated wages so to make you the fans happy
@@MattMajcan immorality is immorality. He is being blamed just as normal people are blamed for similar stuff. Normal people aren't allowed the luxuries Jones was... Yet he now has the gall to complain.
@@ThatGuy-tx4vm demanding to be paid what you're owed is not immoral..its what any human being deserves. expecting someone to give up their own money just to make you happy is immoral.
he was brilliant as a teenage defender... I also remember him playing for England in holding midfield and stopping Xavi and Iniestia and we beat that great side.
I remember signing Phil Jones in FM10 or something. Beast of a player , captained my side to multiple leagues and Champion Leagues. Retired at the club too.
One of my favourite United players growing up. He had the correct mentality and work ethic. Unfortunately, the iniuries dampered his career. Seemed a top top lad. Wish him the best. Always a Red.
Hats off Phil Jones, yes he has a more privileged life than the rest of us but he has faced his battles. I can see him being a top coach but I definitely think he should look into being some sort of player liaisons officer 👍 his openness and relatability would be immense for the modern day player.
A top quality player hampered by injuries, misfortune and poor managers following SAF. As brave as a lion, would put his head in front of a train to get the ball. If his life isn’t successful, we’re all fucked. Good luck to him. Peace and love
He wasn't ever good enough for us. He was slow AF cudnt read the game. Could tackle. He's literally made a good living from the bench. Utd fans know him as phill 12 games a season Jones.
@@vaulthunter6961 In your opinion. No disrespect but I’m sure SAF had a better take on the whole scenario than you and unfortunately things didn’t work out. Supported MUFC since 1976 and I must say I’ve never heard of supporters using the nickname Phil ‘12 games a season’ Jones.
Although I never admired him as a player, I now comprehend his true character. He is an exceptional individual and one of your most outstanding podcasts.
Proper pro this guy was top player also I remember we went for him when united did such a shame about his injuries .. good interview and great player/man 👊🏾
Whoever authorised the 4 year extension in 2019 caused that, he signed it and done his knee again that summer. Played about a dozen games from that summer until he left the club. The club choose to award that contract so they have to honour it, from the interview you can tell he was trying everything to get back. Club doctors should have retired him due to injury and had his payoff and pension.
One of my all time favorite United players! He embodied everything it means to be a United player- resilience, humility, & fighting spirit. The majority of people will never even dream to achieve what he’s achieved.
I went through the same issue as Phil but no where near his level, I knew football was over when I couldn’t kick a ball without excruciating pain in my knee I was always embarrassed and felt like I let my team mates down where I couldn’t play a half regularly
@@dondamon4669 100% professionel, never bitched or moaned about ANYTHING, even though people were giving him so much shit, because of his injuries (which you cant always control) and because he made funy faces during tackles and stuff. He got so much shit from all directions. And also, people seem to think he was alot worse of a player than he actually was. Many people could learn alot from him, you included.
People will say and write what they like but when all is said and done, this guy made it to a level that 99.99% of us could only ever dream of - not to mention winning the PL with Manchester United. The core support will remember him fondly. Well done and thanks Phil, always a red. 🔴⚪️⚫️
Wow Phil spoke so well. I never realised how much pain he was going through with his knee playing games. I hope everything works out for him in coaching.
What a lovely fella!! He represents my Man United. When the plane went down I felt exactly as I would have felt if my family, my brothers, my Mam had been on that plane. That's the Man United I remember. We weren't fans craving only glory, we loved our club, we loved our players. Phil came later, of course, but he was also one of us. edit:- typo
I will be forever proud to have inked your skin Phil, an absolute top lad and i wish you all the very best with coaching and management, you'll smash it mate
Ralf Ragnick was 1,000% correct because everything united are doing today is what Ralf Ragnick said was needed when he was interim manager. Spot on forecast.
fans who saw him in his first season at Utd rate this guy a lot. he could play RB, CB, and MF, sad how injuries robbed us of what would have been one of the best Utd players of the past decade.
ONE THING DOESNT ADD UP. 2015 he knew it was a serious problem and effected him massively. Why did Manchester give him a FOUR year deal in 2019. Either he hadn't told them how bad it was and hid it or united are that shit they offered a man who had hardly played for 3/4 years a four year contract. He should have been released in 2019 not given a four year deal.
Touching and i can sympathize but he did sign a new contract when he knew he was in such a condition. And yet he doesn’t want to get criticized that he was milking it. 😮
Also, he( arguably) has the best defensive challenge ever made in Premier League history! That last gasp headed tackle/clearance against Arsenal back in the day. Hero
Massive respect to Phil for opening up like this. I think part of the problem is that the clubs are so secretive about the injuries that players have. And so, as fans, we don’t know what is wrong with a player or what they are going through to try and get back to fitness. This leads to speculation and negative comments.
Bobby Charlton rated him as the best player he’d seen since the great Duncan Edwards so please just lay off any criticism of him, injuries killed his career.
I'm a Manchester United fan and I was going to leave negative comments. But didn't know he'd done lateral meniscus. Absolute nightmare for footballer. He speaks excellent wish him every success in the future pleasant young man.
Phil....you made it to the top 0.01% and played pro football at the highest level. Be proud of your career and enjoy your life and family after football.
Always gave 100% on the pitch, was a decent footballer too, the mind is a powerful tool, but also so destructive. Even with all the injury problems Phil has won in life, to even become a professional footballer is such a rare achievement 😊
As a United fan that saw Phil Jones signed for the club when I was a kid up till seeing him retire when I'm now 26, I feel so sorry for Phil to be very unlucky with injuries and not able to reach his full potential. Now that he's in the coaching setup, I sincerely hope this new path of football will be a success for him and gets to achieve what he couldn't as a player.
A defender with bags of potential that was sadly hindered by injuries. Can never question his determination, especially against adversity. If anyone has ever questioned his commitment, look back at that clearance with his head whilst sprawled out on the floor against Arsenal! Whatever you have planned in the future, may it offer you with better luck than what you're playing career! All the best! 👏👏
Every single time I hear former players talk about sir Alex...its amazing how good he was at the little things. Things like giving players confidence before a game...i mean even normal corporate managers now never do this basic stuff
Comes across very well and articulate. The abuse he received simply disgusting and simply fuelled by jealousy. All the best to you and thank you for your efforts at our beloved club and who knows maybe one day a return to the Old Trafford dug out??
Unbelievable to see what goes through players heads at times. People are too quick to judge without seeing the bigger picture. Wish him all the best 👍🏼
Yep against Giroud. That's 1 of those videos that makes the funny Phil Jones compilations but it showed the lads character and commitment. Even with a slip he still won the ball and stopped the attack by any means necessary.
Phil Jones is the goat tbh. Dude got paid 100k a week for the last 5 years and played mabye 10 matches. Shame he had so many injuries tbh, but atleast he rich.
Top top man. Excellent player who had a decent career but for injuries could have been the very best. Fair play on your honesty and you’re gonna make a great manager someday.
this was an interesting interview - Phil referred to the amazing feeling of winning the prem however in that season he played less than 50% of the games ......so while he played he was not front and center of that season ......just never fulfilled the potential
He dealt with the criticism the wrong way. By withdrawing into his shell and saying nothing it created an impression that he and other Utd players were remote and aloof from the fans. Like Luke Shaw at the moment, the fans see a highly paid player never fit enough to play for the club and seemingly not answerable to anyone. It's as if they build an invisible wall between them and the fans. I think Phil made a big mistake, he should have sought advice and done some interviews to talk about his fitness. Shaw should do the same. There was never a time when there were more ways to speak to the public, and only now he's gone does he tell his side of the story.
He could’ve been a top CB. I remember his last few games where he’d been out a year, came back in and was very good…then got injured again. Very frustrating as a United fan and I can’t blame him for having “what if” days but he’s had an amazing life non the less.
There’s definitely a place in football for someone who had the career and experiences that Phil has had. Hope he goes down the coaching road though and gets given a chance.
I saw Phil since he was debuted . . for me his carreer is excelllent! . I consider him a true United Blood player . . he was great both at CB. LB and even DM . . i liked he was not just a guy that kicked the ball away . . he got the ball and prevented many goals. . . i do consider the hate he got recently is unfair to his true game. . Thank you Phil! . .wish you continue to be around in the club. .
If you didn’t want Utd fans to spot you, why didn’t you leave the club and play for someone else? Alex Ferguson used to get things wrong and signing Jones was a bad decision, happy to spend every season the bench and still get paid.
Even though he was getting contract after contract, he said that he didnt want a testimonial cos only his mum would turn up. I actually felt that and wanted him to have 1. United fans would of supported it despite his performances
