"The funny thing about magic, of course, is that the more you learn, the less you believe in magic." - That hit me like a ton of bricks.

As always, Philips poems and reads are lovely. I never knew the disappearing dove act was actually just the dove being slaughtered in the bottom of the cage. I’m heartbroken. That’s not magic. That’s just murder. Killing a beautiful bird for no valuable reason. We are such a selfish species.

Phil Kaye and Franny Choi?!? Unsure which is more amazing- this poem or the fact that these two incredible poets could be in the same room with no resulting spontaneous combustion. The older I get, the more I realize how much more relevant it is to be human than to be *insert nationality/race/ethnicity here*

I agree, there’s a wisdom or a kindness in their delivery, that makes the poems ten times more beautiful and ten times more cutting.

Ogaga Akpomiemie we are repeatedly shown that america is “good” , so often that we slowly stop believing it really is, just like we’ll stop believing in the same magic tricks if we see it over and over. Racism has been there since the birth of this nation and it has never really ended; in fact, it’s only increased since trumps candidacy and victory of the 2016 presidential elections. This guy brings up a personal experience of casual racism, and also of his friend. The asian kid was laughed at for not pronouncing a word right, ironically the word he couldn’t pronounce, unalienable, was the same one used in the Declaration of Independence, I’m pretty sure. Anyway “Aliens” are foreigners to a nation, and his friend was treated as such. This speaker was brought up in this nation and learned about its history from a biased point of view (American schools are awfully biased and sugar coat things that shed bad light on America) and he, as a child, believed we were always the good people. Even as everyone laughed at the “alien” from a different country that couldn’t pronounce things right, he considered it as just a joke and nothing hurtful, since Americans were the “good guys. “ As I listened to this poem I picked up on some of the literary strategies he used; there was probably more to take out of the poem but I just finished school and I’m a little lazy to go back and fully analyze it so yeah lmao I hope what I said helped ya

America is not what it's professed to be ... It may seem the land of "freedom" (for some), who 've not been privy to its tragedy🌎
