I was at this show and it was truly amazing. We had no idea JM would be playing, nor did we know they would be doing the 5/8/77 show. One of the best post-Jerry shows I've ever seen.
He was new to the music at this point… Amazing to see how far he’s come since. No argument after 2021-22 tour that Johnny gets it, and is on the bus. It’s been sad to see so many heads (not ever sure I should call them that) react so negatively to Dead and Co. I’m a younger guy, but wasn’t the whole scene founded on community, compassion and acceptance?
Stu Allen was my roommate in college at St.Olaf in Northfield MN. Way to go Stu....well done friend. Now playing with Phil and John Mayer.... like it was written in your soul.
i find stu one of the greatest guitar players ive ever heard ,he really knows his sound , kind zero ego , awesome dude ! i think phil is kind of a dick to call his name whenever he is in a pinch at his fine club that i love , but never brings him to the east coast , actually capitol theater is all he ever does guess i cant blame him at 80 years old , but he must be insecure that stu isnt a big enough name as he seems to put together just plain silly line ups at some east coast gigs , personally id take stu over anybody alive right now to play lead dead guitar , big fan of anders too, course the jrad boys can play as can madson ,,,,guess im just pissed because now i live in philly after five years in marin and i dont get to here stu several times a week
This put a huge smile on my face. This is the best post Dead I've ever heard. Truly amazing. Really tight and the band was on fire. I have new respect for John Mayer.
Jerry Garcia i like this show, which I've just started on, but the Communion show from a couple of months ago was and is the best post-Garcia GD material i can remember. If you haven't seen it check it out. the most pleasant P&F I saw was the very short run with Herring and Jeff Pevar which was what? the second or third tour? I like Warren fine. Warren and Herring was fantastic many nights.
John Mayer's guitar playing has been flying under the radar for years. Some may think he's an ass but the guy is one of the best blues guitarist around today.
+Stratisfied Flying under the radar? The guy must have a couple platinum albums under his belt, successful tours, and Clapton invites him to the Crossroads guitar festivals. I'd say he's pretty renowned.
When Eric clapton says John doesn't know how good he is, I would say that's not flying under the radar. Ever since Try! came out in like 2005 everyone knew right away.
Just when I though Scott was just going to hang back and play Bobs parts, he tore off that Jack Straw solo. Fucking awesome. All 3 guitarists killed it in their own ways and Mayer's enthusiasm for these tunes is evident in his share of flame throwing. Dam.
Matt Mueller oh i know. he was fantastic! everyone was. but the looks on phil's face thru all of Mayer's solo there, ending at 1:14:30ish was just beautiful. can't wait to see the follow-up tonight!
The Row Jimmy (beginning at 1:07) is superb. Phil really digs JM's solos, which are made possible by the tremendous version of the body of the tune. Fun slide work by STU as well as the vocals with Ms. Ferber.
What an amazing concert! One of the things I like about John Mayer is that he seems to like playing outside of his comfort zone. He looks determined to do right by the music and other players here, staying true to the spirit and the style of the Dead without upstaging the rest of the band. When you throw such an accomplished guitarist into this mix, it becomes clear that what Phil Lesh & Friends do is probably a lot harder than it looks!
By the end of this show, during John's solo in Morning Dew, you can see in Phil's face that he knows the music is going to be ok. The torch being passed. So cool.
Set I New Minglewood Blues Loser El Paso They Love Each Other Jack Straw Deal Lazy Lightning> Supplication Brown Eyed Women Mama Tried Row Jimmy Dancin’ In The Streets Set II Take A Step Back Scarlet Begonias Fire On The Mountain Estimated Prophet St Stephen > Not Fade Away >St Stephen Morning Dew Encore : One More Saturday Night original show played Barton Hall 5/8/77
Jerry was always going to have big shoes to fill, but John Mayer slips right into them nicely. Phil's expressions during Morning Dew and Fire on the Mountain, say it all.
Loving the addition of John Mayer...for me, he's the best post-Jerry guitar player to fill those shoes. I mean wow, I am reinvigorated and back into listening to these guys again and it's all due to John. Must give props to Stu and Scott too. Scott has some amazing licks.
HOLY SHIT!! This is absolutely insane! I hate to say it, but this almost sounds better than the original 5/8/77 show. (Well, tighter anyway) ;-) Phil is smiling ear to ear for almost the solid 3 hours. And John Mayer, wow!! He started off quiet and in the background, but by that solo in Morning Dew. Wow!!! What a show!!!
Erik Z I agree, and I think he'll take this experience, and inspiration into his song writing and live shows from now on. How could you not be effected by such a spiritual musical experience and not take some of it with you wherever you go.
This is really very special. Cannot wait to see what the future holds for John Mayer and the Grateful dead. It looks like a new beginning and Jerry is smiling above.
This show rocks. The spirit of Jerry lives on! This has got to be the #1 best post-Jerry show I've ever heard. If you guys keep playing like this, I may have to hit the road for the first time in decades to be there in person!
I grew into (making) music with the dead and fell in love with Johns playing in 2003 at a small club gig in cologne. To see him playing these songs is truely amazing and unexpected. But it totally make sense! Thank you guys for this!
Lockn 2017 was AWESOME! Counting down to 2018 and hoping to see Dead & Company, Phill & Friends, Dave Mathews, Phish, and MORE!! I LOVE MY LOCKN FAMILY!!!
I think Phil is thrilled to see gifted people playing the music he helped created and still making people happy. Was at Santa Cruz and going to dead an co. at STL
+Bill Parmwell he has been a great guitarist, but he needs to record some good albums that are blues unlike his albums which are much pop influenced to be at SRV or Clapton's level
+Rishabh Gajra As I humbly agree with you, sir. I strongly dislike Mayer's pop stuff, but it got him to be a household name. Now he's playing with Dead members? Played with BB King, Clapton, Buddy Guy... I mean, I probably would of sold out a little just to get to do all that. Actually, I wouldn't I'm too stubborn. haha But, honestly what an honor! I agree, with Bill as well... A guitar players, guitar player. Much love!
and here we are, three years later with JM killing it w the band, and really paying homage to the legacy of the Dead and jerry. i love the band right now, and am so grateful he came on board. pun intended :) oteil too!
I'm streaming this at work, through not particularly good headphones, but I have to say - good job, Mr. soundman! Great balance, keyboards just right in the mix, three guitars not drowning out everything else, clear vocals, ... well done.
Hi All! I'm happy John got to take "back seat" & be "humble." No lead singing or hogging the stage or the solos! But he CAN play that geeetar!!! A great matchup, if I ever saw one! 3 great guitarslingers & Phil playing his kick ass bass lines!!
Stu was huge part of Terrapin.. last year at days between he had his band, then played with dso, finished the night with a 2hr avoustic solo set.. unteal
John told us in "In the Light" that he's tried everything in this life but love, true love. I knew since his live Gravity days this was his direction in life. I can't wait to see where he lands in 30 years. It's not his guitar skills that are amazing, it's his ability to learn, apply and appreciate. Our pasts are behind us, John belongs as a Headlight on this new North Bound Train.
There seems to be an uplifting chemistry going on here. Everyone has upped their game. Phil is playing some really tasty bass. Nothing like playing with great musicians.
Thanks again Samwise Gambee... this is GOLD...the best music ever! Looking forward to your upload of part 2! From the snippets I've seen this morning, John Mayer REALLY let loose last night (6/13)!
Very very solid show! Watched the whole think. Mayer was outstanding as lately I have come to expect nothing but pure class and and a natural ability to pay homage to those before him while weaving his own brand and interpretation of these old classics. Very well done guys. Great video!
This is fabulous. Mayer is on fire, the whole band is so tight. Gonna be hard to top this. Trey already one pair of big shoes to fill but now he has two. I don't doubt his abilities but damn, wishing they had picked Mayer at this point. This is a keeper
Loving the various incarnations of Phil & Friends. He knows how to lead a band & after a lifetime of the Dead he's not know as a 'real' bass player outside the Dead community.

Saw Stu and Friends do Europe '72 at TxR in January of this year. Phil has really done an excellent job providing reasonable, tasteful access to quality Dead music at TxR. I know most are here to see John Mayer, but if you see Stu is playing anywhere...go see. He's excellent!
Top quality stuff. Stick this one right alongside with the Phil and friends from 99 with Trey and Page. Good to see younger fellas with serious chops putting there own twists on the music . Phil with the look of a Cheshire cat all night
wow... just starting into it... theres a lot of great musicians on that stage ! goood mix, separation, space... im gonna settle in have a sip have a smoke enjoy this historical reccord... thank you sooo much for posting.
This is a crisp and exciting re-enactment of classic Grateful Dead. I'm extremely pleased. The Other Ones did a comparable job. Notice how every Grateful Dead resurrection depends on two to three Garcia guitarists? The job is overwhelming. From the beginning, the Dead realized you need two drummers. Without Garcia, it becomes clear you also need two lead guitarists.
Does this sound better than 5/8/77? Absolutely. Terrapin XRoads is a pristine sound environment. Barton Hall was a horrible barn that I had to endure for four years in the seventies. The Dead show was the last time I was there.
What the hell?!?!? My eyes, my ears, my soul hurts after seeing this version of Brown-Eyed Women at 54:00...John Mayer has surpassed most in playing the best dead post-jerry. Good lawd. It feels good.
I love it... thank you for the share. Really great tunes, and really well done. And if you still hate on Mayer, then that is on you. He's the guitar player that guitar players want to play with. Whether the "super-fan" likes it or not because of personal hang-ups and low self-esteem.
Cannot wait for these Dead & company shows. This show alone shows John is the best fit out of anybody. No disrespect against Trey, John K or Warren. But John Mayer is the superior singer and really fits jerry's blues the best out of anyone well since Jerry. These shows this fall are going to be magical friends cannot wait. Cya in Columbus friday the 13th of november.
+Andrew Price couldn't agree more man. Didn't see Fare the Well live, but I listened to all the legs. Don't get me wrong, they were great shows! But seeing this now, holy shit.. I'm so glad I saved my money for Dead & co. I think youre right about the style of playing of Jerry and being an overall better singer, but what I think is the kicker is the energy. Watching John, you can tell he is putting his all into it. These shows that he is one: willing to learn it all, and two: that he is way more than capable of learning it. The energy is amazing, the way it used to be.
Used to love that, but the stadium was doing vibrating 😀😀😀 Awesome times INDEED !!! I actually have a piece of JFK stadium from the last show there , Phil literally was tearing that old building Down !!
This is really nice. I felt like these guys were channeling Jerry in a few spots. I am sure Phil hears it too. I guess they all do but Phil especially is holding space for this. Thank you for sharing!
