Loving your first time reaction to this one Greg, and so glad you are enjoying it as much as me. It is a fantastic piece of work. I love Phil's vocals on this and it reminds me of what was to come on some of the Grand Slam material like Crime is on the up, Phil took his voice down a peg or two. But Beat of the drum could easily have been the A side but how many times have I said that. Its one of Phil's best solo efforts I will say that, and to think it never made the album of the time is a musical crime. Its up there with King's Call, or Yellow Pearl, all big hits here in the UK. Thanks once again for a fantastic Thin Lizzy Thursday mate 👍 already looking towards the next one 😊

Beat Of The Drum couldn't have been the A-Side, because Old Town was the A-Side. Beat Of The Drum is a good tune, but it can't hang with Old Town. Old Town is Top 10 in the whole damn Philip Lynott catalog IMHO.

Nice bodhran drum playing. All that percussion you here between the big beats. Basically a skin drum held in one hand and played typically with triplets and damping with the holding hand. great for 6/8 timing too.

Can’t Get Away is my fave Phil solo tune. If it would have had the right record company backing, I think it could have been a real 80’s radio hit

@@247TherockerI couldn't agree more. Can't get away with the Huey Lewis band is superb. Almost sounds like it's geared up towards the US in terms of production.

This is a weird one. The underlying riff is great, but the lyrics are just a second rate re-hash of old ideas. It sounds like he was going for something similar to Over the Hills and Far Away by Gary Moore, with the prison theme and breaking into an Irish jig in the middle of the song, but it doesn't really sound finished and it's nowhere near as successful. Still, this came out first, so maybe Gary picked up some ideas. The drums sound like Brian Downey, which certainly gives things a lift, but overall it's not a song I care if I ever hear again.

Someone else here compared this to something off Wild Frontier by Gary Moore. Hilarious! An album that Gary himself considered a pile of crap. The drums programming is so bad it makes the whole album unlistenable. Beat Of The Drum blows away ANY song on Wild Frontier or After The War. Nice to see an authentic reaction by Greg to a song he never heard before. I would suspect this is not the last time Greg listens to this track.

Gary was well happy with Wild Frontier. Interview in 2002. He dismissed his other metal stuff but not wild frontier. I have an impression that in late 85 when Gary and Phil were close again, that Wild Frontier was planned to be a joint venture from them both. I mourn to never hear Phil singing Gary;s song 'Thunder Rising' from that album. Made for him.
@Michael-----
@Michael----- Месяц назад
@@elzorro7of9The album is garbage, and no drummer on the album. All machines. Absolutely unlistenable. "For Philip" on the rear cover is the one positive. Bob Daisley and Gary have both spoken negatively about the album. After The War may be even worse, but at least that has Cozy Powell on drums.
@patrickcatlett2981
@patrickcatlett2981 Месяц назад
Wild Frontier is hit and miss for me. I think it definitely would be better with a real drummer. But there are few tracks I really like. And I think After the War is great.

@@Michael----- Run for Cover was the first album of his that I bought. Still love it. And I love Back on the Streets. That actually might be my favorite. I was able to see him live on the Wild Frontier tour in Chicago. Very small venue. Great show. Unfortunately he only played 10 songs. Didn’t play The Loner. He must have been in a bad mood
