Full Blown Frustration Mode!! Phil Mickelson with a 10 on Hole 13 after he pulls a John Daly. Very rare Phil move. Ended up scoring a 10 on Hole #13. He incurred a 2 stroke penalty for putting the ball before it stopped rolling.

Why limit holding people to the standards of the Rules of Golf to those people within 5 groups you listed? Everyone should be held to these standards, including parents, children, teachers, clergy, police, retail workers, etc. The Rules of Golf are not so onerous that complying with those rules takes some sort of superhuman effort. It isn’t like penalizing Michelson for hitting a moving putt is a brave interpretation of the rules. That is one of the most obvious rules violations I’ve ever seen by a pro golfer. That violation is so obvious that Stevie Wonder could see that one.

How did he use the rules to his advantage? Had the ball rolled down, he could have gotten an up and down in two strokes, and even if he didn't manage an up and down it would have been maybe 3 strokes. He would have gotten a 7 or 8, at worst a 9 maybe. Here he got a 10 because he 4 putted plus a 2 stroke penalty lol why do people consider this a smart move?

If he was actually smart here and didn't want to play the ball from where it ended up, he would have just replayed the initial putt with stroke and distance. Instead of playing his 8th putt on a moving ball (accounting for the 2 shot pentalty), he could have just replayed that initial putt hitting 7.

It's like picking up the ball in soccer or driving the wrong way down a one way street -- it's going against the one most defining, basic, easily-followed and scarcely-ever broken rule. So even if it's not directly injurious to bystanders or anything, it still understandable that someone familiar with the game would be deeply shocked.

While I know he will face some criticism for this, this may have actually saved him a shot or two. Like he said in his interview after the round, he was using the full extent of the rules. The ball was rolling like it was going off of the green, so instead of letting it, and possibly being worse off, he hit it back and accepted the 2 stroke penalty. It’s not like he is at the top of the field. If he were, then this would be a bigger deal.

@johnm556
@johnm556 6 лет назад
Alex unfortunately as a PGA Golf Professional myself I hate to say this but if Phil really wanted to "take advantage of the rules" he had every right to let the ball roll to stop, announce he was taking the unplayable ball option, which the player has the right to at anytime, picked his ball up and replaced it back behind the hole where he originally putted from with a one stroke penalty. That would have been the more respectful thing to do. Last thing we want is a Class PGA Professional getting pissed off and implying to the golfing world that it is okay to run across the green and hit a moving ball that is heading towards danger. Unfortunately the USGA really goofed up this one and should have said they were going to review overnight whether it was in violation of rule 1-2 and 33-7. That would have sent the right message that we cannot take actions that although may be within the rules that are borderline disrespectful to the spirit of the game. Hopefully Phil will be professional enough to apologize for losing his cool and acting the way he did and hopefully all my Members and juniors tomorrow won't be running across our greens to get 2 shot penalty as their ball heads towards a water hazard.
@PaulSchober
@PaulSchober 6 лет назад
There is no part of that rule that says hitting a ball while moving must be intentional. But think about it. Do you think a 2-stroke penalty was intended to be levied against a player that ACCIDENTALLY hit a moving ball? That large penalty was clearly meant to punish someone who did exactly what Phil did.

@wreckim
@wreckim 6 лет назад
This, because this is Phil Mickelson and not John Daly, will cause the USGA/R&A to probably consider changing the 2-stroke penalty to a DQ under most circumstances. However, there is a huge problem with this in amateur golf. Imagine your 20-handicapp buddy intentionally hitting a moving ball, and than calling it a DQ in a club match etc.. Some rules are perhaps best used for Professionals only. Phil here really put a stain on his otherwise sterling career.

For those who think it is no big deal; It would not have been a big deal except Phil Mickelson did it. Phil is a great player, a stand-up guy who has never done anything like this as far as I ever heard. The "cheat" is that he knew if that ball rolled off the green it would be many more strokes before it would go in- on an already quadrupled bogy hole, he simply cut his losses, took the 2 stroke penalty and could have got off with 9, but flubbed what could have been an easy putt and had to take another. Missing the putt after the little rolling-ball-slap, was not in his game plan- which shows how nervous he was about doing it. It was completely out of character for him. I'm also sure, though, he paid a tremendous penalty with his sponsors. This was absolutely not a class act. And, yes, it is part of the game- it is done now and then by clever players with less than stellar character. But, it is not actually cheating- it is just not cool. Not cool at all.

Not making excuses for Phil's actions BUT the CEO of the USGA Mike Davis did something yesterday that I have never seen in golf at this level, Davis came out on national TV and said the USGA blew it, AGAIN. This is twice at Shinnecock that the USGA has allowed the grass to die off in an attempt to protect par. Phil's frustration should have been shown with a withdrawal not by pulling a John Daly. Phil wanted to win this Open to complete his grand slam, this was probably his last good shot at it, he was exempt so no qualifying, his game is at it's best in a few years, he's won this year already and now he is left with a very hard challenge for him to get an exemption into Pebble Beach next year and the qualifying route is always a gamble no matter who you are so this was most likely his last chance. His actions will never be excused but neither will the USGA's, they have proven time after time that they don't have the expertise on board to setup a golf course for players at this level of the game.

Much ado about nothing much. He knew it was a 2 stoke penalty. He took it, because he thought it was worth it. So what? Players in other sports break the rules intentionally & accept the penalty all the time. Basketball, football...
@dorothygale1104
@dorothygale1104 3 года назад
What is different in gold from other sports, is that by taking the 2 shot penalty instead of playing the ball as it eventually would have lie, Phil is making a negative statement on his own skills. He is effectively saying that taking the 2 shot penalty is worth it because it would have taken him more than 2 shots to get the ball in the hole from where it would have come to rest. In basketball, for example, if I intentionally foul somebody, I’m making the calculation that the other player might not make the 2 free throws and I gey the ball back sooner in any case. By intentionally fouling an opposing player, there is no implied statement about my own basketball skills like there is implied by taking a 2 shot penalty in golf. If Phil wants to take the 2 shot penalty, more power to him. But by doing that, he is making the determination that it would take him more than 2 shots to get the ball into the hole from where it would have ended up. For a guy who is touted as having one of the best (if not the best) short games of all time, that shows an incredible lack of confidence in his own skills. Sure the ball would have rolled off the front of that green, but he would be chipping/putting back uphill which should be straightforward. Heck, I’m only an 8 handicapper, but I wouldn’t want to effectively publicly admit I can’t get an uphill chip/put into the hole in 2 shots. There is a reason you don’t see tour players doing what Phil did. No professional wants to effectively publicly admit that they ate not good enough to get the ball in the hole in at least 2 shots, let aline losing any chance at bettering the 2 shot penalty by holing the next chip/putt: in baseball, they would call hat Phil did Bush League, not because it is against the Rules (which it is not), but because it cheapens pro golf. BTW - if hitting a moving putt and taking the 2 shot penalty became a thing in pro golf, I would wager that that penalty would be increased to stop that sort of thing.

He does what he wants and gets two strokes added to his score like everyone else! If he lets it go, he ends up with a tricky short sided pitch off a tight lie and over the bunker. No bargain. Best case he makes 8, worst, a 9 or 10. The play is to take an unplayable and play the putt over. He’d be looking at a 7 if he makes it, 8 if he doesn’t. Assuming he hits a better putt on the second try.

Well, it should have been a dq on the spot. Phil knows better. This is something you NEVER do. He was so far behind I think he just didn't care and wanted it to end. If you hand out just a two stroke penalty for this, you are opening the flood gates. PGA missed the call on this. Phil is a real popular player, had no chance to come back in this event, so instead of sending him home on a very televised event and pissing off his fans, they let it go with a two stroke penalty. The man isn't an idiot...he knew exactly what he was doing. He knew where the ball would eventually end up and figured it would take him at least two strokes to get the ball in the hole from there. He basically used the rule to his advantage.
@dorothygale1104
@dorothygale1104 3 года назад
If it would have taken him 2 shots to get the ball in the hole from where it would have ended up and the penalty is 2 shots, he not using the rule to any advantage, as he ended up with the same score on that hole that he would have most likely ended up with had he played the ball from where it would have eventually ended up (it would have been a straightforward uphill chip/putt). By taking the penalty, he is insuring against the event of it taking more than 2 shots to hole out if he had played the ball. But in taking the penalty instead of playing the ball, Phil is doing something that in baseball, they call Bush League. He’s properly accepting the penalty .for sure, but in so doing, he is effectively saying that he is not confident in his skills in getting the ball in the hole in at most 2 shots and absolutely making the statement that he had no chance of getting the ball in the hole in 1 shot. Even though the ball would have rolled off the front of the green, the next shot would have been straightforward as it would have been straight back uphill. This is a pretty incredible effective public admission by a guy who is touted as having one of the best short games ever. I’m only an 8 handicapper and I would never want to publicly admit that I can’t chip/putt my ball uphill into the cup in 2 shots. There is a reason why doing what Phil did isn’t a thing on the Tour, which reason is that no other pro wants to send the public message that they are so unsure of their own skills that a 2 shot penalty would be the best result for them. Hell, pros have long putts all the time and you don’t see them picking up their ball and taking the 2 shot penalty. If they end up 3 putting or worse (which happens), then taking the 2 shot penalty would be the best result. But Tour pros don’t want to admit that they are so unsure of their skills that they need to protect against a 3 putt (or worse). It cheapens the individual and cheapens the game and Tour. I guaranty that if taking the 2 shot penalty instead of playing ball became a thing on tbe PGA Tour, the 2 shot penalty would be increased. Golf is a game of integrity and integrity and integrity encompasses much more than following the rules. Integrity is Arnold Palmer forging a lifelong relationship with his agrnt, Mark McCormick based on a handshake because Palmer felt if a handshake wasn’t a bond, then he shouldn’t be doing business with that person. Integrity is Arnold Palmer taking the time to carefully sign an autograph so it could be read because if a fan was going to take the time to get his autograph, he owed the fan a good autograph and not a scribble. Integrity is Arnold Palmer sending a letter of congratulations every week to whomever won that week’s Tour event until he passed away. Integrity is way more than using the Rules if Golf as downside insurance against one’s skill level.

@tbeevers
@tbeevers 2 года назад
@@lrn_news9171 guess my question is why are you commenting about this now?? Hell, Phil isn’t even on the tour anymore. I’m not condoning the action but he admitted, the ball was going to roll down and around behind that bunker. From that position, given the condition of those greens at this particular tournament, it was an almost impossible shot to put the ball anywhere close and potentially relive the same putt again. There wasn’t any “getting up and down” from that position behind the bunker. Bottom line is, the USGA lost the golf course that day. It was absurd. Again, I’m not condoning his actions, but he wasn’t in the hunt and he saved a bunch of time. This tournament was a joke so at that point for him, who cares if it’s a 7, 8 or 10?
@tbeevers
@tbeevers 2 года назад
@@dorothygale1104 no way I’m spending the time to read all this. Really couldn’t care less what you think and even though I don’t condone Phil’s actions, there’s no way in hell he would’ve gotten “up and down” from where that ball was going to end up. It was a serious no man’s land behind there so he did what he did. No one cares now.

It doesn't save strokes. He did it to get off the course faster. He was frustrated, he knew he no chance to win, and so he wanted to finish early. (and get an earlier tee time to go home, probably)

I hear you! I didn’t know there was a 2 stroke penalty for deliberately stopping your putt!. That said, it’s a terrible look from a pro. I think Phil knew the consequences, wanted to stage a silent protest around the silly state of the greens, and just get off the course faster.
@PaulSchober
@PaulSchober 6 лет назад
Not exactly. If you stop your ball or deflect it or influence it, that is an immediate disqualification. The other rule if for someone making a stroke on a ball that is still in motion. Clearly this is the latter. But it could be argued that this was an attempt to deflect the course of his putt, which would be DQ. But the rules officials saw it his way immediately. I agree he did this as a protest. It was ridiculous. There were areas on some greens where it was nearly impossible to 2-putt. That isn't fair. That's basically putting land mines on the green that players just need to be lucky to avoid.
@troyundroy1
@troyundroy1 6 лет назад
Paul Schober Thanks for that - what a grey area that is! You have to ask though - if Phil was 5 shots in the lead and did this exact thing on the final hole of the tournament... would they let him win?

The rules are what they are. 2 stroke penalty. You can't make up new rules just because you are mad. The media has no say. fans have no say. Rules are rules and in golf, they are concrete and in this case, they were applied.

If he really wants this debacle to go away and not have to deal with it...........near as much. Apologize and withdraw, just my opinion. I was talking to the golf pro at the golf course I was hanging out at and he played the course, the hardest he ever played was his first statement. Then, blind shots, maniacal greens, and a course that was just seemingly unfair. Every golfer in the tournament had to take their medicine at some point (13 for most), so should Phil have.

I'm about as outside golf as it's possible to get, with an understanding of all but the most obscure rules. And I know that you're not allowed to do that. Stopping the motion of the ball was one thing, but re-placing and marking? What was that about? And apparently there are golf fans who think it isn't a big deal.

Phil was taking advantage of the Rules of Golf in his favor, is all. Why let the ball keep rolling when it is in your power to stop it from getting into trouble in a bunker or water or high grass, etc. Take the 2 stroke penalty and save yourself perhaps 3 or 4 strokes in the process, even with the penalty strokes. Don't NBA basketball players foul the other team on purpose sometimes to their own advantage? Don't NFL quarterbacks throw the ball out of bounds sometimes to avoid losing yardage?

Clinton Hurley .Rule 1-2, yes 2 stroke penalty in stroke play, in the case of a serious breach of rule 1-2 , the committee may impose a penalty of disqualification. A serious breach is if the player gains a significant advantage. I guess finishing higher up in the field, therefore earning more money and points is an advantage over another player in the tournament? If he didn’t want to play the ball where it would have stopped, he must have thought he would have scored worse. I have always liked him, just found it odd he did it and was planning to do it at some stage, as he himself said.
